Buster Installation - Partition phase - Inode option to choose - SSD or Mechanical HD

2019-08-24 Thread list

Hello All.

Thank you for any help, advises, explanation one's can provide.

When installing a Debian - Buster here.
When it's time to partition/format the drive one can choose the «usage»
of the partition which affect the Inodes.

There is :

-Typical usage” (which is “standard” by default)
- "News” (lots of inodes),
- “largefile” (fewer inodes),
- “largefile4” (even fewer inodes)

What would be the «best» to choose for an SSD in an usual desktop
environment ?
What would be the «best» to choose for an mechanical HD in an usual
desktop environment ?

Files system is EXT4.

If you have any link/url to read about an learn more to make the best
choice for any circumstance it would be great.

Regards.

how to revert my system to a particular date...

2007-06-01 Thread Zhengquan Zhang mailing list
Today after sid upgrade, I found that my collins cobuild dictionary under wine
is unable to load.. I want to revert my system to the day before yesterday.
I tried to reinstall the dictionary and reinstalled wine but the dictionary
still failed to launch.

Now I want to restore my system to a previous state, I also want to know if
there is a more secure way of using sid, for example, I can set some
restoration points, when things go wrong, at least I can temporarily revert to
a earlier state and continue my work. Any pointers and suggestions are
appreciated.

link suggestion - blog banned by Goo gle

2006-12-16 Thread list
Hi. My name is Eugene Gershin. Perhaps we have met online, but more probably
you don't know me from Adam. I monitor blogs for SamsonBlinded, and came across
your post.

I'd like to welcome you to look at Obadiah Shoher's blog. Obadiah - an
anonymous Israeli politician - writes extremely controversial articles about
Israel, the Middle East politics, and terrorism.
Shoher is equally critical of Jewish and Muslim myths, and advocates political
rationalism instead of moralizing.
Google banned our site from the AdWords, Yahoo blocked most pages, and Amazon
deleted all reviews of Obadiah's book, Samson Blinded: A Machiavellian
Perspective on the Middle East Conflict.
Nevertheless, 170,000 people from 78 countries read the book.

Various Internet providers ban us periodically, but you can look up the site on
search engines. The mirror www.terrorism-in-israel.com/blog currently works.

Please help us spread Obadiah's message, and mention the blog in one of your
posts, or link to us from malayamaarutham.blogspot.com. I would greatly
appreciate your comments.

Best wishes,

*** About the W3C Mailing Lists ***

There are many mailing lists provided by the W3C for discussion
and development on the World Wide Web. A partial list of them
is available at:

   http://www.w3.org/Mail/Lists

NOTE that this list is not the place for any of the following:

   How do I configure [insert-favorite-software-here]?
I'm new to the web -- what is it?
I tried to ask [insert-company-here] customer support, but
[I didn't get any response / they told me to RTFM]

Answers to the above questions are often found on the Web. A list
of useful resources is available at:

http://www.w3.org/Help/

*** Administrative Requests ***

The -request mail address should be used for all list administrative
requests. It accepts the following commands (in the Subject of an
e-mail message):

subscribe -- Subscribe to the list. If you want to subscribe
under a different address, use a Reply-To: address
 header in the message.

unsubscribe -- Unsubscribe from the list.

help -- Get information about the mailing list.

In the event of an address change, it would probably be wisest to first
send an unsubscribe for the old address (this can be done from the new
address), and then a new subscribe from the new address (the order is
important.)

Most (un)subscription requests are processed automatically without human
intervention. Do not send multiple (un)subscription or info requests in
one mail. Only one will be processed per mail.

NOTE: The -request server usually does quite a good job in discriminating
between (un)subscribe requests and messages intended for the
maintainer. If you'd like to make sure a human reads your message,
make it look like a reply (i.e. the first word in the Subject: field
should be "Re:", without the quotes of course); the -request server
does not react to replies (except for sub/unsub confirmations.)

*** Online Archives ***

Every submission sent to this list is archived and made available online.

Title: David Dawes: 830M/845G/852GM/855GM/865G Driver

Intel® 830M/845G/852GM/855GM/865G Driver for XFree86™
David Dawes [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I no longer have access either to the hardware or the specs related to this
driver, so my support for it is limited to things that require neither.

  September 2002:
I committed a major update to the Intel 830M and 845G chipset support to
both the XFree86 CVS trunk and DRI CVS trunk. I reworked the 2D driver, fixing
many problems. Keith Whitwell fixed numerous bugs in the 3D support, and Alan
Hourihane and I added XVideo support. The updated driver is included in the
  XFree86 4.3.0 release.
  9 December 2002:
I committed a second significant update to the Intel 830M and 845G support
to the XFree86 CVS trunk. This second update is also available from the mesa-4-0-4-branch branch in the DRI CVS repository. I fixed
lots more problems in the 2D support, and Keith Whitwell fixed many bugs,
stability, and correctness problems with the 3D support. Most of the known
problems that we have been able to reproduce have now been fixed. From the
feedback I have had so far the 830M VT switching situation is greatly
improved, but there are still some cases where it causes a problem.
  28 January 2003:
I committed support for the Intel 852GM and 855GM mobile integrated
graphics chipsets to the XFree86 CVS trunk, and it is included in the XFree86
4.3.0 release. To get full functionality with these chipsets, the agpgart
driver needs to be updated. Updates are available here for Linux and FreeBSD.
See the relevant section below for details.
  5 February 2003:
I committed support for the Intel 865G integrated graphics chipset to the
XFree86 CVS trunk, and it is included in the XFree86 4.3.0 release. To get
full functionality with these chipsets, the agpgart driver needs to be
updated. Updates are available here for Linux and FreeBSD. See the relevant
  section below for details.
  11 April 2003:
A fix for some of the crashes that can happen when VT switching has been
committed to the XFree86 CVS trunk. If you've been seeing this type of crash
with the XFree86 4.3.0 version, please let me know if you still see them when
using a version dated 11 April 2003 or later.
  8 October 2003:
A patch based on Christian Zietz's code to tell the video BIOS about extra
video memory that has been allocated was committed to the XFree86 CVS trunk.
This should help with many 825GM/855GM laptops that were previously limited to
video modes requiring less than 1MB of video memory.
  20 October 2003:
A workaround for yet another class of VT switching problems thought to
only happen on 845G platforms was enabled for all platforms in the XFree86 CVS
  trunk.
  20 October 2003:
The patches for VT switching problems fixed since the 4.3.0 release were
committed to the xf-4_3-branch branch of the XFree86
  CVS repository.
  7 January 2004:
An option called "VBERestore" was added to allow the above VT
switching workaround to be disabled. This is reported to be needed on some
  830M-based machines.
  25 January 2004:
Code was added to check for the Intel-specific video mode refresh rate
BIOS calls before relying on them. The standard VBE 3 method is then used to
  set the refresh rate.
The latest version of this driver is available in source from the trunk of
the XFree86 CVS repository. The version from February 2003 is included in the
XFree86 4.3.0 release. Fixes up to the end of October 2003 are included in the
xf-4_3-branch branch of the XFree86 CVS repository. The
most recent fixes will be included in the 4.4.0 release, which is due out
soon.
Binaries of this driver are included in the 4.3.0 release and
in the latest 4.4.0
release candidate. If binaries are not available for your platform, you will
need to be willing and able to build XFree86 from source in
order to use this driver.
Linux
In addition to building/installing XFree86 CVS code, a recent 2.4.x kernel is
needed. 2.4.19 or later is recommended. If you want to use the DRI support, an
updated i830 DRM module is also required, and it is best to build one from
either the XFree86 or DRI source tree. To do this you will also need your kernel
source installed. Here is an example of how to build and load the i830 DRM
module:
# cd xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/os-support/linux/drm/kernel
# make -f Makefil

Hi All,
I'm having problems with getting my HP DeskJet 895C printer to
work. It is connected with a usb cable. I have, I think anyway,
all the appropriate usb modules (ehci, uhci, usblp, and usbcore)
loaded in the 2.6.8 kernel I'm using, and I'm running sarge(upgrade
from woody). I also have CUPS and the HP drivers "hpijs" and
"hpoj" installed. I can log onto the CUPS admin page and work with
it so CUPS seems to be installed correctly. However, I cannot get
the computer to find the printer. I know the printer works as I
just unplugged it from another computer and used the same usb cable
for both hookups.
Anyone have any good ideas for troubleshooting this? Being a
newbie to Linux I'm at the end of my own ideas as to where to go
from here. I have run the "/etc/init.d/hpoj setup" command and it
scans for, but does not find the printer. I have the .ppd file for
the printer installed in the /usr/share/cups/model/ directory. The
/proc/bus/usb/ directory is empty. When I tell CUPS to look to
usb interfaces for the printer, no matter what usb interface # I
have used, the error log tells me the device can't be found. When
I run "gs -h" the "ijs" device is listed in the output.

Try installing hotplug

and can automatically configure network interfaces.

Wayne,
I installed the hotplug module in the kernel as you suggested. I
even rebooted afterwards, but still no joy.

Move to tty1 then remove and insert the usb cable and check if the
printer is claimed or not.

Epson Perfection 1670 Photo and SANE

2004-07-23 Thread debian . list
My new Epson Perfection 1670 Photo was purchased last night, as the
http://www.sane-project.org/sane-mfgs.html#Z-EPSON listed this as "good means the
device is usable for day-to-day work. Some rather exotic features may be missing".

So to get this unit going I did this:
dhunt:/home/dan# apt-get install libsane libsane-extras hotplug gphoto2 gtkam
sane-utils

Right! I'm using a stock kernel 2.6.6-1-k7 and the command
dhunt:/home/dan# sane-find-scanner
found USB scanner (vendor=0x04b8 [EPSON], product=0x011f [EPSON Scanner]) at
libusb:004:007

Good! Now the command
dhunt:/home/dan# scanimage -L
device `snapscan:libusb:004:007' is a EPSON EPSON Scanner flatbed scanner

Now! The documentation seems to be leading me in circles. I have edited
/etc/sane.d/snapscan.conf to
uncomment out the line
/dev/usb/scanner0 bus=usb

Anyone have some gentle guidance or HOWTO I must read to get this scanner sharing my
vacation photo's?

Kind regards,
Dan Hunt

Disablin IPv6 in Debian sarge with Kernel 2.6.7

2004-07-12 Thread Alexander List
Hello,

just to document how I disabled IPv6:

- changing /etc/modutils/aliases or /etc/modules.conf did NOT work
  (found in Google)
- adding "alias net-pf-10" to a fresh /etc/modprobe.conf (didn't exist
  on my system) DID work

I tried to deconfigure the IPv6 addresses at runtime and remove the ipv6
module, but I failed (device or resource busy)... which was quite
annoying because I had to reboot...

Cyrus 2.2 (imap, pop)

2004-05-26 Thread List User
Hello Debian users,

I'am looking for Debian packages for Cyrus imapd 2.2 generation.

The last information I found about, was in November 2003 on this list. Can
someone tell me, what the current status of the packing is? On the official
Cyrus web site version 1.x is declared obsolete, 2.1 security-fixes only and
2.2 the current stable release.

Thank you very much for your help/information.

I am willing to test the new packages on my mail server. I'm running testing.

Ciao,
 Mario Schubert, Munich

And another thing.

When gv or ggv display some postscript files (probably bitmap images)
they look like shit. On my box at work, they look just fine. Any
suggestions?

fonts in xemacs

2004-04-25 Thread user list
I just built a testing box that is using the 2.6.4 kernel, a matrox g200
graphics card with framebuffer compiled into the kernel. I am now
working on font problems.

1. In xemacs, I can get a very nice looking font for the actual editing.
However, the menu bar (where things like file, edit, etc. show up) has a
really awful looking font.

2. Some of the applications have tiny application fonts, even though the
gnome-terminal and mozilla have taken the freesans setting from the
desktop preferences.

I have paged through some of the archives without success. Any insight
would be useful.

Wierd behavior gnome search

2004-04-22 Thread user list
I just installed a testing box running the 2.6.4 kernel. I was trying to
search for xemacs files, including the icons. However, the gnome search
tool failed to find any files starting with xema. The standard linux
find was successful. I even tried inside of /usr/bin, where xemacs
resides without success. the gnome search tool finds other files and
other character strings within file names.

Can someone demystify me?

Syntax highlighting in Xemacs: What did I do right?

It seems that since the beginning of time, Xemacs never performed
syntax highlightin automatically when a file is loaded. On one of my

syntax highlighting in my initialization file.

Does anyone know what I did right on that machine?

We are getting some errors on running apt-get update to.

We did make changes to the sources.list file over the weekend, creating a

These are the errors;

Is this on our end or something intermittent? We ran apt on another machine

True that apt-get is pretty easy. But we have webmin on all our machines,
and the source is one way to make sure you have the latest version, I know
they have had a few security updates in the last couple of months. Plus the
installer is very user-friendly. But the best is you actually get to do a
real source install from scratch :)))

As for the original post on an alternate cpanel or plesk tool, webmin will
fall short on the ease of use by the novice web hosting client, though I
think there are some ISP modules out, haven't seen one yet that offers the
scope that plesk or cpanel do. We find the Raq/Cobalt GUI is one of the
better ones for letting a non-tech try and manage email accounts and such.

Really? Why make it a hassle for the user? We run Debian, but in a
hosting/DNS/Server environment. I am sure many others aren't using their
Debian as a desktop. We use Mac OS X for desktop, so when I reply, I have to
do reply all or I end of sending to the poster, which seems to irritate many
on the list.

Our sun list is set to first reply to the list, then you can reply all for
the poster, and since many use a different addy, some going into dev/null, I
am sure many post are never seen.

So is Debian not about accommodating the new user? Or is this strictly for
the good old boys?

Seems of late that there are more and more bash and flames then help coming
from the herd. It's to bad considering how excellent Debian is.

I for one think this is one of the most tolerant list around, non of the
typical READ THE ARCHIVES, That has been answered go search. Many pop back
with an answer and may remind us forgetting fools (me included) that it is
in the archives but yet answer anyway. That is building a sense of
community.

Also just because it's in the archives doesn't mean it is relevant today.
Things change, people find other answers or improvements all the time.

We are on a list for a certain flavor of server appliance and the List
Masters (they think they are) do the READ THE ARCHIVES with out adding any
help. Because of that mentality we helped start a mirrored list with out the
RULES that discourage others.

Loading New MySQL Testing on Woody

Hi

I seem to have blanked out on what I should place in my
/etc/apt/sources.list to be able to load the latest testing build of MySQL
4. We are running woody with MySQL 3+ version.

If we do want to update the MySQL what would happen to the old MySQL, will
apt automatically remove the old version and replace it with 4? Will apt be
"smart" enough to preserver the MySQL user and database information if so??

I found quite a bit by just going to http://www.historychannel.com and using
their search engine.

I would have to agree though on many of the search engines, using one
keyword is not an efficient way to search, you need to narrow down the
keywords and phrase to truly get the right results. I doubt you would type
in New York to find out about the Statue of Liberty.

Re: apt-get testing HELP please

2004-01-12 Thread user list
Your sources.list must have testing repositories,i. e.

deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian testing main contrib non-free

and you must issue:

apt-get update

If you want to use testing as the default release,
in apt.conf you should have a line

APT::Default-Release "testing";

I hope this helps.

Debian install on Virtual PC / OS X

I have the firewall on the Mac opened for port 80 and 8080.

Has anyone install via this method before that may know the answer.

LSI Fusion MPT ?

2003-12-10 Thread ke-list
I'm trying to install Debian on a Dell Dimension 360 with an LSI
21320 Fusion MPT SCSI adapter. As I understand things, most 2.4.18
kernels don't support it but 2.4.19 does. Unfortunately, the Woody
bf24 install uses the former.

I've tried making a rescue disk based on 2.4.22 but initrd.img is too
big, and leaving it out seems to prevent it from finding the root
disk.

I've tried using the Sid install but even after adding the correct
device with mknod it won't mount existing partitions implying it
doesn't include the needed driver.

Does anyone have an idea how to get Debian installed on this
configuration ?

dhclient

2003-12-01 Thread user list
I'm running a testing laptop and I'm trying to use dhclient (as I have
in previous incarnations of this testing laptop). When I invoke
dhclient, I receive a message saying:

socket: Protocol not available - make sure CONFIG_PACKET and
CONFIG_FILTER are defined in your kernel configuration.

So I looked at the .config file in the 2.4.20-kernel-source
directory and, sure enough, CONFIG_FILTER owas not defined. However, in
the xconfig menu, it appeared that CONFIG_FILTER had an =N default. I
am compiling a kernel with CONFIG_FILTER=y.

So I have tow questions for now.

1. Why doesn't xconfig have a default setting for CONFIG_FILTER that
matches the menu?

2. What has changed in dhclient to make this necessary?

Big fonts again

2003-11-17 Thread user list
I have been struggling with fonts, with some success, for the last few
months. Now I have fonts that have nice shapes, but are HUGE. I'm
running a testing box.

I have a .gtkrc.min file that looks like this.

style "gtk-default-iso-8859-1" {
 fontset = "-adobe-helvetica-medium-r-normal--0-100-75-75-*-*-iso8859-1"
  }

 class "GtkWidget" style "gtk-default-iso-8859-1"

I followed the font guide that was posted a few weeks/months ago from
this list. The fonts that seem out of my control are those on the
borders of mozilla and those associated with the title and tool bars of
xterms and gnome-terminals. I would really like to figure this out.

Re: Desktop hostname?

2003-11-07 Thread user list
I use exim on every one of my debian machines. Did you let it know to
use a smart-host? You probably need to know the name of the mail server
at our ISP.

Regarding your hostname, you can specify what you email address should
be (usually set by your ISP). The local host name shouldn't matter.

My @INC has been corrupted

2003-09-26 Thread David List
Somehow my Perl @INC when running dselect has been corrupted. I have had
a newer version of Perl installed under /usr/local, and at some point I
have begun getting error messages when committing the changes from
"Select" in dselect.
The error messages are all about some DebConf/*.pm files not being found
in @INC, and the @INC being shown only contains /usr/local/. paths.

After I have begun getting these error messages, I have removed
everything related to the /usr/local installation of a newer Perl
version. I still get the error messages when running dselect.

What has happened, and how can I set things back to normal again?

On firewire there actually only is the sbp2 module for storage. It
should work with that right away.

I don't have the freecom mobile hard drive, but use another (Starking
ME-910) which is USB2.0 and Firewire.

USB works fine, just not on my notebook, since there is not enough power
to get it running.

Firewire works excellent. (just using the sbp2 driver)

No sourcing of ~/.profile at login

2003-09-16 Thread David List
It seems to me that ~/.profile is not being sourced at login, but
~/.bashrc is, on my newly installed Debian Woody.

I'm used to having this in ~/.profile:

if test -f /etc/profile; then
. /etc/profile
fi
if test -f ~/.bashrc; then
. ~/.bashrc
fi

...since I'm used to ~/.profile being guaranteed as being sourced at
user login, and then having contents in ~/.profile that make sure that
~/.bashrc is being sourced also.

It seems things are the other way around on Debian...or am I just
confused?
If I'm right, how do I control what *does* happen at user login?

Hope you can help.

I'm looking into the graphical login setup on my newly installed Debian

No, only these:

/usr/X11R6/lib
/usr/lib/atlas

I tried putting

/usr/lib
/usr/local/lib

into the file and that made no difference.

I issued

complaint about the libstdc++.so.5 missing. I'm building Mozilla 1.4

Compiling Mozilla 1.4 on Debian Woody

2003-09-15 Thread David List
Has anyone here compiled Mozilla 1.4 on Debian Woody? I'm trying, but I
seem to be unable to get a working result.

Already when I run the configure script coming with the source code, I
get an error message in the output:

./conftest: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.5: cannot
open shared object file: No such file or directory

When the configure script has run I can issue 'make' and everything
seems to run OK, but when I have issued 'make install' and try to run
the newly installed Mozilla 1.4, I get an error message telling me the
same thing as the one I got from the configure script.

The strange thing is that I *do* have a libstdc++.so.5 since I have gcc
3.3 installed under /usr/local:

-rwxr-xr-x1 root staff 4229977 Sep 13 23:18

So - what am I missing?

pristine 2.4.22 kernel sources and make-kpkg.
When I boot the new kernel I get messages, such as:
"getent: command not found"
"head: command not found"
"awk: command not found"
and the system does not boot up fully, seemingly because many other
binaries cannot be found either. I do get a prompt, but no programs are
available, only the bash builtins.
When I boot the original 2.4.18 kernel there are no problems - except
that I only utilize one of the systems' two processors.

Those are all commands from /usr/bin. I have a separate /usr partition.
Could that cause it?

What could I do about it?

Thanks in advance.

Best regards,
David List

exim run-time option for seeing compile-time options

2003-08-24 Thread David List
Is there a way of getting to see what compile-time options the exim 3.35
binary that comes with Debian 3.0r1 was built with?

I have looked through the exim man page, but I didn't see a run-time
option for outputting the compile-time options for the binary.

Best regards,
