need help: unmet dependencies

2024-08-01 Thread Michael Morgan
Dear all,

I don't know much about linux and need your kind help.

My son's Raspberry Pi 4B's OS is "Debian GNU/Linux 12 (bookworm)" (from
"/etc/os-release").

Yesterday I tried to run "apt update" "apt upgrade", but it stuck at
upgrading package "chromium-browser" (The progress status bar froze; cannot
ssh to it anymore; although I still can ping it).

I had to shut it down and reboot it. I tried it several times but it always
stuck whenever trying to install the package. I also got the following
warning:

You might want to run 'apt --fix-broken install' to correct these.
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 chromium-browser : Depends: chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra (=
126.0.6478.164-rpt1) but 122.0.6261.89-rpt1 is to be installed or
 chromium-codecs-ffmpeg (= 126.0.6478.164-rpt1)
but it is not going to be installed
Recommends: chromium-browser-l10n but it is not going
to be installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt --fix-broken install' with no packages (or
specify a solution).

When I ran "apt --fix-broken install", I got the following message:

The following additional packages will be installed:
  chromium-browser chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra
The following packages will be upgraded:
  chromium-browser chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra

But when I continued with the installation, it froze again:
Reading changelogs... 33%

What should I do?

My "/etc/apt/sources.list" is quite simple:
deb http://deb.debian.org/debian bookworm main contrib non-free
non-free-firmware
deb http://deb.debian.org/debian-security/ bookworm-security main contrib
non-free non-free-firmware
deb http://deb.debian.org/debian bookworm-updates main contrib non-free
non-free-firmware

Thank you very much!

Michael

Morgan,

Hi Andy, Thanks for coming back to me:-

Possibly just don't use calamares. Use the standard Debian installer (d-i for
short). Either the standard or expert installs offer you "ordinary" LVM or
encrypted LVM with LUKS, made even more straightforward if you can choose

Actually, it was calamares that worked better than d-i - after
failing with Debian's calamares live install I followed the
  instructions for d-i here:
https://www.blakehartshorn.com/installing-debian-on-existing-encrypted-lvm/
Blake Hartshorn seems to do a pretty good job of describing the
problem and solution.  However, it wasn't a solution for me
because the install failed repeatedly over the course of a couple
of days (I was using 10.10 cf. BH using 10.4) - it wasn't until
after I'd invested in a new flash drive and continued with the
same fails that I tried the PureOS live install, which worked.
You can read a full discussion of my woes here:
https://github.com/calamares/calamares/issues/1564#issuecomment-898246354
Essentially, d-i couldn't get passed either the base system dpkg
install (most usually base-passwd) or the following software
install.  The dpkg warnings were thrown on "parsing file
'/var/lib/dpkg/status' near line 5 package 'dpkg' : missing
description field" with errors on the stateoverride file.
I would have filed bug reports but then Debian went to 11 and I
figured there'd be a new disk spun so it was all history anyway
and I had a working machine with PureOS.

Also: the standard size for swap is now 1G and for a dedicated /tmp
partition of 2G.

That's interesting - so nothing for hibernation on swap?  I gave
8G to allow for hibernation, but would happily give it away if I
  could?
Many thanks.

Thank you very much Greg for your detailed reply - and my
apologies for not coming back to you sooner, but I've had a little
struggle getting myself back up and running over the past few days
  or so.
The object of the exercise was to get my laptop a little more in
tune with my home server - I back up my two laptop user accounts
to the server (there's a guest account too); I started with one
admin user on my server but then needed user accounts to match my
laptop accounts - but, my admin account was at 1000 which is where
my first laptop user account was...  The rest follows with a
predictable logic - except that I felt that having the admin
account on 1000 was aesthetically pleasing :)
> change only UID 1000 to UID 1003, leaving UIDs 1001 and 1002 alone.

guess that's aesthetics again - my personal account was my first
account, so that's where I prefer it in the pecking order...

Thank you - that does seem a little less reckless than my initial
approach...

I have a RAID on the server I back up to - I guess I'll do for it as
you suggest I do for the home directories.

Keep well.

Thanks David - I do have my home directories all comfortably backed-up
to a raid device on my local server - I stopped taking stuff off-site a
year or so ago. However, it's still a right royal pita when both the
live CD and full install DVD are broken, see commentary from here:
https://github.com/calamares/calamares/issues/1564#issuecomment-898246354

I do find it puzzling that there's not straight forward way of doing
LVM-on-LUKS.

Ah, well, yes.  I was rather throwing caution to the wind.  But, when you put
off doing a job for months and then you finally get round to doing it, there's
an element of recklessness that sneaks in.  I guess there's a moral in there

But, all recklessness aside - what would be the correct command to achieve the

Can't boot following re-install to LVM on LUKS [was: can't login via gdm]

2021-08-11 Thread Morgan Read
Hi List,
Since my cry for (fairly minor) help here:
https://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2021/08/msg00461.html
I think I've dug myself into a bit of a deep hole.

After having overcome a fairly fundamental bug with calamares as described here:
https://github.com/calamares/calamares/issues/1564#issuecomment-846321060
And, (unnecessarily as it turned out) re-installed my system, I find
I'm unable to boot. Instead of getting a password prompt for my luks
lvm partition, I get dropped to the shell with the following error:

cryptsetup: ERROR: luks-[some UUID]: cryptsetup failed, bad password or options?
/bin/cat: /crypto_keyfile.bin: No such file or directory
Nothing to read on input

In
(initramfs) /cryptroot/crypttab
There is
luks-[some UUID] UUID=[some UUID] /crypto_keyfile.bin luks,keyscript=/bin/cat

I can manually mount my my luks volume so:
cryptsetup open /dev/sda3 --type luks [some UUID]
Enter passphrase for /dev/sda3:
To here:
/dev/mapper/[some UUID]
But, from there the LVM LVs don't get mounted and if I exit to boot
then I get dropped back to the shell. And, lvm2 doesn't seem to be in
initramfs.

I can reboot to the live install usb image and when I do:
sudo cryptsetup open /dev/sda3 --type luks [some UUID]
Enter passphrase for /dev/sda3:
>From the terminal, then the lvm on luks volumes pop up as expected
immediately decrypted, named under /dev/mapped/[some VG-LV-name],
/dev/[some VG]/[some LV], enumerated at /dev/dm-xyz etc and mounted
under /media/user/[partition label]

So, may be calamares has more than one bug with LVM on LUKS? Or, as
the above bug only refers to LVM and not LUKS, perhaps I've done (or
not done) something silly during the install with calamares and LUKS
(though, it does seem a pretty pedestrian walk through of the install
process).

I guess, there's something not referenced in the initramfs?

Any pointers to a way back from Armageddon would be great :)

Thanks.

can't login via gdm

Hello List,

I ran the following to change my users UID & GIDs - but, now I have no

Commands executed:
# usermod -u 1003 guest

help: apt stuck at 0% [Waiting for headers]

2021-07-21 Thread Michael Morgan
Dear friends,

I need some help here. I worked in a university and have a linux (debian 9)
machine with DHCP. For some reason I needed a static IP and two weeks ago
the university sent someone who helped me set up the static IP. From what I
saw the file they modified is the "/etc/network/interfaces".

However, I found that now I cannot update/install packages. "apt update"
stuck at "0% [Waiting for headers]" for a long time and then give the
following message:

"apt list package_name" still gives information about the package, but "apt
install package_name" is stuck at "0% [Waiting for headers]".

The internet connection has no problem. DNS seems fine as well. I can ping
for example security.debian.org or 8.8.8.8.

My "/etc/apt/sources.list" file is:

deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ stretch main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ stretch main contrib non-free

deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ stretch-updates main contrib

My other debian 9 machines with same sources.list file have no problems so
I guess it must be related to the change of static IP. But I cannot figure
out what is wrong. I have tried "apt clean" but it did help.

Thank you very much!

Thanks Stefan, I was wondering about something along those lines, but...
Inside master-pdf-editor-4.3.89_qt5.x86_64.deb I find:
data.tar.xz > /./opt/master-pdf-editor-4/masterpdfeditor4

And, inside master-pdf-editor-5.7.08-qt5_included.x86_64.deb I find:

  /./opt/master-pdf-editor-5/masterpdfeditor5.png

  /./usr/share/applications/masterpdfeditor5.desktop
  /./usr/share/icons/hicolor/256x256/apps/masterpdfeditor5.png

So, everything looks fairly well distinguished - but, I know *nothing*

installing two versions of a user application

Hello Folks,

Some little time ago I made a jump from another distro into Debian.

When I made that jump I took with me a few proprietary applications that
I make a lot of use of. One in particular is causing me a bit of a
headache - Master PDF Editor by Code Industry:

Master PDF Editor is now well into version 5, but when it transitioned
from v4 to v5 it left a lot of its functionality (in the no cost
version) behind. So, I'd always kept a copy of the old v4 rpm to hand
and installed alongside v5 in my old distro. Version 4 has long since
become unavailable, but I was able to make good use of alien to magic my
v4 rpm into a v4 deb.

BUT, now I can not install both v4 and v5 alongside one another. When I
install v4, v5 is removed; when I install v5, v4 is removed. This
wasn't a problem under the old distro. Each version is installed into
its own directory, either: /opt/master-pdf-editor-4 or
/opt/master-pdf-editor-5.

I tried to force it with the following, but...

Is there any method to allow v4 and v5 to be both installed together?

efibootmgr headach?

2021-03-21 Thread Morgan Read
Hello Folks,

(Apologies for the long post, but there's a lot of circularity to follow...)

I'm finding it difficult to understand the relationship between
efibootmgr, what's showing up in my F10 boot 'BIOS setup options >
System Configuration > Boot Options' and what exists under /boot/efi/EFI

I was trying to boot from standard PureOS usb boot image. No trouble
booting from usb before (iirc). Trying to boot from the usb has failed
with the machine going straight to into debian.

I booted with F10 into the 'BIOS setup options > System Configuration >
Boot Options' and selected the boot order under 'UEFI Boot Order' to be
'USB Diskette on Key/USB Hard Disk', 'USB CD/DVD ROM Drive' and finally
'OS Boot Manager'. Changing that order didn't change anything ('OS Boot
Manager' was initially first). Next boot I had a look under the 'OS
Boot Manager' menu and there were a couple of old entries other than
'debian': 'fedora' and 'Windows Boot Manager'. ('Doz$ left my system 5
years ago when it arrived in the post...)

After a bit of Internet searching I discovered efibootmgr and also that
redundant entries can accumulate under /boot/efi/EFI. Under
/boot/efi/EFI I discovered:
$ sudo ls /boot/efi/EFI
BOOT debian fedora

And, efibootmgr:
$ sudo efibootmgr
BootCurrent: 0004
Timeout: 0 seconds
BootOrder: 0004,,0001,
Boot* fedora
Boot0001* Solid State Disk
Boot0004* debian
Boot* USB Drive (UEFI)

'efibootmgr -b 0 -B' got rid of the fedora entry from both efibootmgr
and the BIOS 'OS Boot Manager' menu, but left /boot/efi/EFI/fedora which
I delete manually.

efibootmgr -n produced:
'The selected boot device failed. Press to Continue.'
On next boot followed by the 'Boot Manager - Boot Options Menu' with
listings as for the 'OS Boot Manager'

efibootmgr -t 10 does seem to have an effect, counting the difference
between t=0 and t=10 and reboot and grub menu - but, I never see an OS
boot menu to choose between 'USB Diskette on Key/USB Hard Disk', 'USB
CD/DVD ROM Drive' and 'OS Boot Manager'

So, I was left with:
'Windows Boot Manager'
'debian'
Under the F10 boot 'BIOS setup options > System Configuration > Boot
Options' menu;
BOOT debian
directories under /boot/efi/EFI;
And, efibootmgr gave me-
$ sudo efibootmgr
BootCurrent: 0004
Timeout: 0 seconds
BootOrder: 0004,0001,
Boot0001* Solid State Disk
Boot0004* debian
Boot* USB Drive (UEFI)

I had a punt that 'Boot0001* Solid State Disk' /boot/efi/EFI/BOOT and
the Boot Options' menu entry 'Windows Boot Manager' might be related so
did 'efibootmgr -b 1 -B' and that removed the 'Boot Options' menu entry
'Windows Boot Manager' but not /boot/efi/EFI/BOOT. So, I moved
/boot/efi/EFI/BOOT to /BOOT and nothing seemed to change on rebooting -
so, I put back /boot/efi/EFI/BOOT and low and behold, under the 'Boot
Options' menu the 'Windows Boot Manager' had reappeared and efibootmgr
now gives me:
BootCurrent: 0004
Timeout: 0 seconds
BootOrder: 0004,0005,
Boot0004* debian
Boot0005* Solid State Disk
Boot* USB Drive (UEFI)

I feel like I'm going completely potty!!! Is anyone able to shed some
light on what is going on? And, get me able to boot from my usb flash
drive...? (Again.)

System info to follow.

Thanks,
Morgan.

how to remove GUI

2020-09-10 Thread Michael Morgan
Dear friend,

I recently installed Debian 9.13 on my machine. I was planning to use it for
scientific computation so GUI is not necessary. For some reason, I installed
the desktop environment with LXDE desktop during installation. Later I
decided to remove them. These two commands were executed:

tasksel remove desktop

apt purge $(tasksel --task-packages desktop)

However, after rebooting the system still has GUI. Here is the result of
"tasksel --list-tasks":

u desktop Debian desktop environment

u gnome-desktop GNOME

u xfce-desktop Xfce

u kde-desktop KDE

u cinnamon-desktop Cinnamon

u mate-desktop MATE

u lxde-desktop LXDE

u web-serverweb server

i print-server print server

i ssh-serverSSH server

u laptoplaptop

So it seems the desktop package was removed. But why it still has GUI?

It is pretty much an absolute clean installation. The only thing I did
between OS installation and removing GUI is the installation of cuda package
(for GPU driver). "nvidia-smi" gives:

|0 1730 G /usr/lib/xorg/Xorg
132MiB |

|0 2285 G kwin_x11
17MiB |

|0 2292 G /usr/bin/krunner
2MiB |

|0 2295 G /usr/bin/plasmashell
45MiB |

|0 3091 G ...4-linux-gnu/libexec/kscreenlocker_greet
28MiB

So plasmashell and x11 are not part of desktop? What is the correct way to
completely remove GUI?

Thank you.

mount an external usb hdd and share it through samba

2020-05-05 Thread Michael Morgan
Dear all,

I have an external usb hdd. I would like to automount it on boot and share
it through samba.

1) So I put it in the fstab. It automounts correctly on boot, no problem:

UUID=XXX /usb-hdd ext4 defaults,nofail 0 0

2) I then share the directory "/usb-hdd" through samba (in smb.conf) after
it was mounted. No problem again:

[usb-hdd]

comment = raid5-usb

path = /usb-hdd

read only = No

valid users = michaelm

3) however, if the machine restarts, automounts works but the samba share
always fails. I can easily fix it by:

systemctl restart smbd

Since automount works, and samba will work well if I restart it, my guess is
that on boot, samba (smbd service) starts before /usb-hdd is mounted. To
make it working,
I need make sure the fstab mounting happens before samba starts. Can anyone
tell me how to do it? Or, any better solution for auto mount and share a usb
HDD?

Thank you very much.

C Compiler

Those kinds of questions are better asked on
debian-user@lists.debian.org.

You probably want to install the build-essential package, which gives
you a C compiler amongst other bits.
"

Can you help? What is build-essential?

Thanks,

Tom

Where is CC and why do my downloads not find it?

2012-10-31 Thread Samuel Morgan
Hi-

I recently installed DEBIAN Linux on my 386 PC and then
tried to install an Apache web server, as I have on Mac and
Windows, binary and it asked for a C compiler. Where do I get,
if I really need, a CC binary pre-built? Seems a bit like
the chicken and the egg.

Can you help?

Thanks.

Netlogo not packaged for Squeeze?

2012-02-20 Thread Roger Morgan
Netlogo doesn't seem to be packaged for squeeze. I find this strange because
Netlogo has been around for a while, is widely used, and is licenced under the
GPL. Details, see  page,http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NetLogo
and the source is available from https://github.com/NetLogo/NetLogo

What's the best way to proceed? Is there an "unofficial" package somewhere? Is
it planned to be in Wheezy?

Roger

I eventually solved this as follows.

1. Uninstall samba completely including configs: the following packages:
samba
samba-doc
samba-common
samba-common-bin
libwbclient0
swat
smbclient
libsmbclient
webmin
and their dependencies.

2. Check samba directories /var/lib/samba and /etc/samba don't exist any more.
3. Reboot
4. Install packages:
samba
samba-common
samba-common-bin
libwbclient0
smbclient

5. List users with pdbedit. (the installation, trying to be smart, had added 4
users).
Tried:
smbclient -L lyra
and responding with my password, still didn't work, but produced an error
message instead of timing out.
I googled for it and found somebody else had had the same problem and fixed it
by
deleting the users which installation had added with pdbedit, and re-creating
them with smbpasswd -a.

6. Delete the users found in step 5 with pdbedit, and add the users needed with
smbpasswd.

Then everything works.
This is an old installation of Samba, going back to lenny, and I conclude that
the upgrades didn't do exactly

what they should have. The clean install should not be different from an
upgraded install but it clearly was.

Thanks to Camaleón for helping with this.

Well, there's the Openmoko Freerunner:

It's clunky and buggy, but it's free as in freedom,

Problem with Samba on Squeeze

2011-04-30 Thread Roger Morgan
Samba is running but I can't connect to it, and when I do the following test
(from the Samba server):
smbclient -L servername

the response (after entering correct password) is:
cut here---
Receiving SMB: Server stopped responding
session setup failed: Call timed out: server did not respond after 2
milliseconds
---end of response--

the Samba programs are running, here's the relevant part of the output of ps
-ef
| grep mb
root 1969 1 0 18:13 ?00:00:00 /usr/sbin/smbd -D
root 1983 1969 0 18:13 ?00:00:00 /usr/sbin/smbd -D
root 2308 1 0 18:13 ?00:00:00 /usr/sbin/nmbd -D

### Authentication ###

# This boolean parameter controls whether Samba attempts to sync the Unix

Part of this was by going around and doing VERY general google searches

another dist to generate an xorg.conf that worked (somewhat), copying

EndSection

Section "ServerLayout"

Its worth a shot.

Even normal users have their last login shown. its not root-specific,
its a problem with the login getter.

They aren't orphaned at all. They're just /user declarations/ used by
some daemons, startup scripts, etc.

There's also users like Nobody. Nobody exists, but isn't anyone.

Mainly because there's so many things that CAN use these users. Not
every service gets run as root, nor should it.

Users in *nix and friends are a way to seperate out who can touch what.
This is a security thing, and something that isn't really all that new
or unique to a Debian box. Here's a fresh Fedora install:

root:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/zsh
daemon:x:1:1:daemon:/usr/sbin:/bin/sh
bin:x:2:2:bin:/bin:/bin/sh
sys:x:3:3:sys:/dev:/bin/sh

games:x:5:60:games:/usr/games:/bin/sh
man:x:6:12:man:/var/cache/man:/bin/sh
lp:x:7:7:lp:/var/spool/lpd:/bin/sh
mail:x:8:8:mail:/var/mail:/bin/sh
www-data:x:33:33:www-data:/var/www:/bin/sh
nobody:x:65534:65534:nobody:/nonexistent:/bin/sh
indrora:x:1000:1000:Morgan Gangwere,,,:/home/indrora:/bin/zsh
sshd:x:104:65534::/var/run/sshd:/usr/sbin/nologin

*nix and its friends use LOTS of users to do LOTS of things. I make
users on a regular basis when I do something that should be chroot'd or
otherwise kept in check.

There's "minimal" and then there's /minimal/. Debian's netinst does add
some things, and some of the additions can be a bit awkward. For one,
the "Base System" package actually adds quite a bit.

Here's the biggest hogs:
gcc and friends
manpages (Puppy iirc uses none)
initrd/kernel (puppy uses a REALLY stripped down kernel and a REALLY
well compressed one at that)
kernel modules (there's some added overhead)
apt's cache
any and all graphical environments.

Sounds about right for the netinst's defaults.

Sounds like your VM is playing games. "Dynamic" usually means there's
more accounting to do.

Puppy pales in comparison to TinyCore (10MB with X and a wm and a
package manager)

Providing debs of Chromium is like providing debs of Enlightenment's
DR17 branch: Its out of date by the time the package is built.

For Chrome I can understand as the Chrome release cycle is on par with
most others -- about 4 months per release with at least a modicum of
stability. the problem is that with Chromium you are never guaranteed
stability in any form.

As much as I like chromium (I use it as my default browser on Windows
and Linux, and soon on Mac too) the release cycle is too fast to allow
for appropriate packaging given the speed of Debian packaging.

the 1394 standard says that a computer which supports 1394 must also
support "1394 networking". Short end of it, if you need to move some

b) If so, why?

Chromium gets new builds once every 20 minutes or so... so if you're
running Chromium, then you need to make sure you've gotten the latest
and greatest.

see http://build.chromium.org/ for the buildbot waterfall and all sorts
of goodies. If someone's locked the tree to hack on something, it might
take a little longer, so beware.

Check that you've first just got a bad build (it happens) and go from
there. if the problem persists, try with another browser like
Kazehakase or Midori to see if its a WebKit related issue. If that
does help, start filing bugs in google's tracker for Chromium.

Remember, using Chromium is just another phrase for "Being a google

Squeeze can't handle ATI M3's anymore. (X11 issue)

2010-10-15 Thread Morgan Gangwere
Hi y'all

I'm running Squeeze on a few boxes now and I've noticed something in the
X11 packages... It doesn't like my ATI M3. Its a Dell Latitude C600 with
dreadfully low amounts of RAM, but that's not the big problem...

What happens is:

I start up the box
Everything looks good until GDM starts
X starts up
Box graphically locks.

I can SSH into the machine and write out an xorg.conf, and magically
*behold!* it works. Worked on Lenny, works under *ubuntu and with
Crunchbang (it includes an xorg.conf IIRC...)

Once you have it configured using xorg.conf, it works fine, but X's
autodetection seems to have failed more and more over time...

Instead of using --append-to-version, use the version append in *kernel

make menuconfig, search around for "Append to version"

+NAT loopback is not enabled on my router. Not sure this answers your
+question.

NAT Loopback means that if the outside IP is requested, it acts like its coming
from the outside, not the inside.

+
+I don't ssh as root; NAT is disabled in my router. As for SSH key,
+I'll give that a try, but too little time before I fly out of here.

See below...

+> I have a Lenny box sitting on my desk that I SSH to all the time

+
+Good to know. I've mailed a query to the ssh list.

+
+Now I am confused ;-(. What I'm trying to do is:
+
+  laptop client -> internet/nameserver -> router -> server on LAN
+
+Your first line looks like what I have now; the second line looks like
+where I'm trying to get.

thats what I was aiming for.

+The first problem sounds like it would involve my router, but I've
+enabled ssh services in it. I don't know if I should enable NAT (my
+rough impression is that NAT is best avoided). I should think my name
+server would be able to use port info to send signals to the right
+place, but I know nothing about it this "translation".

That generally implies that your router has some form of SSH on it.

NAT is useful if you have one outside (public) IP and many inside (private)
IPs, which is what it sounds like you have.

For example, My router NATs pretty heavily. It has one external IP owned by my
ISP, and it NATs for many Internal IPs on a 10.13.37.0/24 IP range. Yes, I went
there.

What I'd do for the moment is make sure the appropriate /port/ is forwarded at
least. I'd refer to portforward.com 's big list of routers and see if they have
any suggestions. Their instructions are generally pretty clear.

IF after following basic instructions you can't get it, I BLAME YOUR ISP RAAAWR.

Random Blithering Curiosity... Is the gateway a NAPT?

I had this problem for a while where I would be fine on the inside, then as
soon as I went to the outside, I'd get the same problem you're experiencing.
Checking the following fixed my problems:

1) don't ssh as root unless you /have/ to.
2) Check that your NA(P)T allows port 22 on TCP *and* UDP, incoming and
outgoing.
3) try using an SSH key. This occasionally fixes things.

I have a Lenny box sitting on my desk that I SSH to all the time with the
default configuration. Nothing special, just the default OpenSSH-server
configuration.

For those who were confused:
The setup as it looks like to me is this:

(Internets)[Gateway/router]--,---[server]
  `--[laptop]
 this configuration /works/.
[laptop]---(??)--(internets)--[gateway]---[server]
 This does not.

This leads me to beg that there is either a configuration issue that says "Dont
let anyone who's not on my local network talk to me" or a configuration issue
with port translation.

fonts in /usr/share/fonts/X11/misc/*.pcf.* are going to be ignored. By default.
By "design".

xlsfonts won't show the xfonts-* fonts until you fix something...

+fc-cache -fv

Should be enough...

HOWEVER... the problem is going to be a file called «no-bitmaps». it tells
fc-cache to /ignore/ binary fonts...

Its just a link to ../conf.avail/70-no-bitmaps.conf so you can safely delete

70-force-bitmaps.conf into /etc/fonts/conf.d/ however you *dont* need to
because it won't ignore them anymore.

Make sure you remember to run fc-cache -fv as *root* in order to flush the

to show up.

The reason I ask is that, IIRC, GDM does not heed .xinitrc at all. Instead, it
runs /etc/gdm/something -- making the moderately logical assumption that you're
not doing something awkward.

IF you need something that pays attention to ~/.xsession and ~/.xinitrc, you
may want to look into xdm or SLiM. I'm not sure if either does autologin, but
its worth a shot.

Just a thought...

Conky and GKrellM both do a nice job. I personally use a Conky
configuration where I have what works to this effect:

${if_up eth0}
eth0: up, addr $alignr ${addr eth0}
Up ${alignr} Down
${upspeed eth0}${alignr}${downspeed eth0}
${upspeedgraph, 20,100 eth0}${alignr}${downspeedgraph 20,100 eth0}
${else}
eth0: down
${endif}

See http://i.imgur.com/u3bKA.png for a recent screenshot of my desktop,
conky living in the upper right hand corner.

GKRellM is a bit different, and has a much more graphical look to it.

So, you're using LXDE, so openBox for the WM and PCManFM for the file
manager / desktop background manager. Its sad that I know this, for
some reason (I've never used LXDE out of anything but curiosity.)

Under Debian, Firefox is rebranded to be 'totally FOSS' (*) as
Iceweasel.

Which is in the repos as 'icedove', again for 'total FOSS-ness'.

I disagree with that. I have /no/ icons on my desktop. its purely there
as a courtesy -- even on Windows!

The fastest way (to get to your question) is to quickly learn the
Desktop file spec. Desktop icons are just text files.

They generally look like this...

- --8<--
[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=My App
Exec=myapp
icon=myicon
- --8<--

IIRC (IANAE) it was a debian political move to not zip the isos that
boiled down to FOSS-ness alá mp3.

Go look at Jigdo's documentation... There's a reasonable HOWTO if you
google around... I found > http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Debian-Jigdo/ < in a
matter of... 30 seconds?

I personally actually use bitTorrent and get the NetInst iso. 50MB is
just fine for me, and unless there's a reason (i.e. unsupported network
hardware in the base kernel, firmware needed) you should be fine using
the netinst ISO. It gives you a reasonable starting place that will
pull off mirrors for you.

(*) I disagree with the idea that because something has a copyright on
it that it barrs something from being 'FOSS'. As an artist, programmer
and all around compu-jack-of-all-trades, I think that its perfectly
legitimate to have a logo which is not in the total open source. But
thats just me... and I'm one of the freaks that wants CC for code.

Actually, I have used Chromium on this box, and used it for quite a
while. It was speedy enough at the time, but Midori has proven to be
much better.

Here's the problem though: Disk thrashing is *bad*. I mean *really*
bad. I dislike it when an app decides that there's an infinite amount
of bandwidth available to them, both for network access and disk
access. Anything that *relies* on disk caching (save, maybe for a
swapdisk) is generally going to *slog*.

What FF does is not cache the /content/ to disk, but the ENTIRE memory
stream. This would be good if I had a nice set of SATA-3 RAID'd disks
with a link right to the mobo, but its *not* good when you have a tiny
little PATA disk that barely pulls 40GB.

I'm not going to argue semantics or details (especially not here) but
this is more a fundamental flaw of application design as it is
currently taught. I took a C++ class where the instructor used a book
which claimed that "Desktop computers have at lest 1GB of RAM available
at any one given time" and that malloc'ing 1GiB at a time is a "Good
Idea". they also claimed that "Modern Computers have at least 10GB of
free space" -- I've worked on boxes (debian boxes even!) where the free
space was measured in /a few hundred megs/.

Software Development as it is taught assumes the Greatest Thing Since
Last Wednesday™ and it gets on my nerves. Coming from

I don't use extensions to begin with, so I can't pass judgment. I do
know that the extension framework in Midori is good enough that
Adblock has been ported over, though.

I so far have /not/ had many problems with Midori. I guess I'm just
used to software crashing because I'm normally a Windows guy*.

Those can be easily fixed if you're under a GTK environment. It steals
from GTK2 pretty nicely except for the tabs, which I don't mind.

I know it sounds odd, but /none/.

The whole scariness of "omg it sends everything you type to
google11" is a /crock of steam/. The logic is as follows:

1. User starts typing into the Unibox
2. if it looks like a URL, check if the local history has it. If so,
return those.
3. when no more results are available from the local history, query the
URI against the search provider given in the preferences*
4. if it looks like a URL (that is, beginning with a URI scheme that we
understand), go there. Otherwise, return the search page of the search
provider with the entry as the query.

Do you use the web interface or a POP3/IMAP interface? The web
interface is painfully slow, yes, and most of the time I keep it
together with some very carefully crafted userscripts.

occasional issue with the video (Which is because, despite the fact that

I use irssi a lot and when I use the Alt-(num) to swap between windows I

I have my /etc/defaults set to:

I tried setting mysql.default_host in the [MySQL] section
of /etc/php4/apache2/php.ini (I am using apache2), but
that didn't work.
Running dpkg --configure -a after the change brings up the
dialog mentioned earlier. I select "Create". It asks me
for the root password of the MySQL database, and it comes
back with:
--cut here-
Setting up phpbb2-conf-mysql (2.0.21-7) ...
You need to have mysql-server installed if you want the MySQL
database to be hosted locally. Aborting.
Postinstallation of phpbb2-conf-mysql failed. Run
`dpkg --configure -a' to retry
dpkg: error processing phpbb2-conf-mysql (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
 phpbb2-conf-mysql
--end extract---

It still thinks I want the MySQL database to be installed
locally, which of course I don't.

phpBB

2008-04-07 Thread Roger Morgan
I'm using Debian Etch and am trying to install phpBB using the standard package
manager.
phpBB needs a database, and I already have other apps on the machine that use a
MySQL server on another machine on the same LAN. So I expect that phpBB will be
able to use the remote MySQL server as well.
But when I try to install from the Debian package, it can't.
It brings up a dialog box,'If you have not yet created a database and want to
do so now, choose "Create".' (with some other options). I pick that, and it
asks me for the root password for the database, but it doesn't ask me which
host the MySQL server is running on, so not surprisingly, it fails.
The phpBB package seems to assume that the database server will always run on
localhost, which is a really bad assumption. If you have a LAN (and who
doesn't?), obviously you will want to run the MySQL server on just one machine
and let all the others use it.

Is it possible to fix this problem manually while still using the Debian
package?

X11 session over ssh, problem

2006-12-29 Thread Roger Morgan
The problem is that I ssh to a server, and then try to run a program that
requires an X display. I want it to use the X server on my workstation. It
doesn't. It just does nothing.

Details: Three machines on my LAN are relevant. Call the one I'm sitting at
O, and the others A and B.

O runs Sarge, A runs Etch, and B runs woody.

From O, I can successfully use X over ssh on A; I do this on O:

xterm -e ssh A &
then on A I can run stuff like xpdf and it opens a window on O, as expected.

But if I do the same to B (i.e. xterm -e ssh B &), then try to run a program
like xpdf which uses X, it doesn't work. xpdf just sits in the background,
doing nothing, until some timeout occurs, then emits the error message:
"Cannot connect to X server localhost:10.0". The problem is not specific to
xpdf, it's the same with any X program (but some emit additional
error-message text).

Here's the contents of /etc/ssh/sshd_config on B, excluding comments:
Port 22
ListenAddress 192.168.1.9
Protocol 2
HostKey /etc/ssh/ssh_host_rsa_key
HostKey /etc/ssh/ssh_host_dsa_key
UsePrivilegeSeparation yes
PAMAuthenticationViaKbdInt no
KeyRegenerationInterval 3600
ServerKeyBits 768
SyslogFacility AUTH
LogLevel INFO
LoginGraceTime 600
PermitRootLogin no
StrictModes yes
RSAAuthentication yes
PubkeyAuthentication yes
RhostsAuthentication no
IgnoreRhosts yes
RhostsRSAAuthentication no
HostbasedAuthentication no
PermitEmptyPasswords no
PasswordAuthentication yes
X11Forwarding yes
AllowTcpForwarding yes
X11DisplayOffset 10
PrintMotd no
KeepAlive yes
Subsystem sftp/usr/lib/sftp-server

and here's the contents of ssh_config on B (comments stripped):
Host *
ForwardX11 yes

The contents of files on O are presumably correct, since everything works
when I do

xterm -e ssh A &

The DISPLAY environment variable seems to be set correctly on B:
echo $DISPLAY
gives
localhost:10.0
which is correct for redirecting an X session back to my workstation, it has
applied the X11DisplayOffset from the config file correctly.

The /etc/hosts file on B starts with:
127.0.0.1 localhost

xauth is installed on B, and if I delete the .Xauthority file, it gets
re-created when I ssh to B (as it should).

The files /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny are empty except for comments
on all these machines.

The file ~/.ssh/config on B contains one line:
ForwardX11 yes

(the file does not exist on A, by the way).
I can't think of anything else to check. Ideas, anyone?

Alan that did not work.

Erico, in your steps, did you mean:

apt-get install linux-source.2.6.XXX?

Is grub your boot loader? If so I would hit "e" at the grub screen to edit
your kernel and initrd lines. On my amd64 box I have symlinks in / that point
to the actual kernel and initrd. I would try...

kernel /vmlinuz root=/dev/md0 ro

and...

initrd /initrd.img

Just a shot, not sure if that will work there or not.

I found that the 2.6 pre-compiled debian kernel is using ext3, reiser and
others fs as modules. I did :
# apt-get install kernel-image.2.6XXX
# apt-get install kernel-source.2.6XXX
# apt-get install kernel-tree.2.6XXX
The last "apt-get" I think its no necessary.
note the XXX ! please change to your kernel variant. My is 686!
Then :
cd /usr/src
# tar xjf kernel-source-2.6XXX
# cp /boot/config-2.6* kernel-source-2.6XXX/.config
# cd kernel-source-2.6XXX
# make menuconfig
Configured to use ext3, xfs and reiserfs not as modules. Save and quit the menu.
# make-kpkg --initrd --us --uc kernel_image
# dpkg -i kernel-image-2.6_10.00.Custom_iXXX.deb
after all, I remove the lilo.conf and generate another as I don´t realy care
about lilo
# rm /etc/lilo.conf
# liloconfig
# reboot

Good luck

Peter,

thanks, I actually did use that guide to do the set-up, and it was
very helpful. the problem I have is how do I move from having either
a RAID0 or RAID1 to having BOTH.

I have the four disks broken up into two RAID0 arrays of two disks
each. what I want to do now is have the two RAID0 disks be
'mirrored' to each other - i.e. RAID1

when I try to use the "Create MD" It am told that I don't have any
RAID partitions; but I can't set the RAID) partitions to physical
RAID partition either.

so that's where I am stalled out. I have the two RAID0 but can't
figure out how to create a RAID1 out of them.

Hello Morgan,

Have a look at the link below its should be of help setting up a
software
raid1. If you are using lvm as well at the beging of the expert
install, pick

the mdcfg module and the lvmcfg module.

Need help installing RAID 0+1

2006-02-20 Thread Morgan Reed
Fresh install of Debian 3.1 on a box with 4 SCSI 18.2 GB HD. SCSI
card is a non-RAID adaptec card.

I am trying to set up the 4 drives as 2 RAID0 of 36 Gig each mirrored
(RAID1)

So far, I am able to get the two 36 GB RAID0 partitions set up, but
then when I try to create another MD, it says I don’t have any more
RAID partitions created. When I go back to the partioner, I am not

From what I have read, I should be able to create a RAID1 from the

It’s possible I’m just not thinking about this the right way – what

Re: gui for apache? Webmin Dead?

2006-02-18 Thread Morgan Reed

Ok, obviously I have been living under a rock, why is webmin no good
anymore? is Jamie Cameron no longer maintaining it?

Is there an alternative to webmin that has taken the crown?

I for one was always a fan of webmin as a nice GUI way to manage a
server without needing to install a windowing server. it put all the
config files in easy reach and a nice front on most of them.

So if webmin is out, what's the in?

You mean in sarge you can set up apache via webmin ?
Then I believe you can do that with etch too.

As you can see on http://pdo.debian.net/webmin (or
http://packages.debian.org/webmin normally), Webmin is not in
Etch or

Sid, and has not been for about a month now.

See http://bugs.debian.org/343897

Thanks for the interesting trivia about Webmin. Now, is there a gui
for setting apache in Etch?

I heard some stuff like tkapache, essentia but no information can be
retrived from debian repository.
But why you need the GUI ? Go throuhg the conf file, it's more easy
and

powerfull than using something
like IIS MMC.
It's look hard once, but then never ever as easy as that way.
I, myself, even wish that I could just manage IIS setting with a flat
conf file.

There's a program called motion thats pretty easy to setup and works well.
Watching fruit trees might be a problem though as they will tend to move in
the wind and trigger the motion sensor. Maybe you should try razor wire,
landmines and a scarecrow?

Try: http://mmto.org/~swest/tecra8100/tecra-sound.html

This is for redhat but it might be some help. Your going to have to have your
kernel source setup so your gunna want to skip point 1. on that page and find
a howto for doing it the debian way.

iptables TARPIT

2004-12-27 Thread Simon Morgan
Hi,

Has anyone managed to get the iptables TARPIT module working with
debian? I notice there's a module for it included with the iptables
package:

bollo:~# dlocate TARPIT
iptables: /lib/iptables/libipt_TARPIT.so

but getting it to work isn't that simple:

bollo:~# iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 135 -j TARPIT
iptables: No chain/target/match by that name

It's my understanding that support needs to be compiled into the kernel
and I'm assuming this isn't the case with the stock debian kernels (at
least the latest 2.6 in testing). Support seems to be provided by the
patch-o-matic on the netfilter site, so I downloaded patch-o-matic,
apt-get install'd the kernel source, apt-get source'd the iptables source
and did:

bollo:/usr/src/patch-o-matic-ng-20040621# KERNEL_DIR=/usr/src/linux
IPTABLES_DIR=/usr/src/iptables-1.2.11 ./runme extra
Your iptables version is unknown for patch-o-matic at ./runme line 214

Has anyone had better luck than me? Or even have any ideas?

Thanks.

need RAID driver for install, but no floppy drive

2004-04-13 Thread Matt Morgan
I'm trying to install Debian (3.0 r2) on a Penguin Computing Relion 140.
It has an LSI MegaRAID disk controller; the driver is not present on CD1
of the install CD's, so the install can't find any hard disks to install
on. Interestingly, the driver is present on the floppy install set I
downloaded, and of course you can download it.

The problem is, this computer has no floppy drive. I tried a USB drive
and it didn't work. So I can't install because I get to the point where
the install asks for a floppy with the driver, and I can't provide it.
There does not seem to be an option to provide the driver on another CD-rom.

What is my best option here? I can think of

1) set up the network and install the driver from an NFS/FTP/HTTP share.
2) Make my own CD1 somehow, that includes the driver. I guess I can
mount the iso, add the file(s) to the right folder, and then burn the
iso to CD. But I don't know where to put the files. Honestly I don't
even know if the .c and .h files (the ones I have) are what I need here.
3) Figure out how to get the install to recognize a USB floppy.

Which should I try? How do I go about them? Anybody done this before,
one of these ways, or some other way? I think I prefer #2, if that's
possible. Although if HTTP will work, I can do that pretty easily.

Thanks,

I've had no problems in testing (as I don't use KDE!), except for the
change in behaviour of lilo which is in any case lilo release related

Just try to keep in mind that, on installation (i.e. when you run "lilo"),
lilo builds a map of physical locations (i.e. disk sectors) of what it
needs at boot time. That's why it's so small and why it doesn't need to
grok filesystems at boot time. The downside is that you need to remember
to rerun it when you do anything which changes where stuff it needs
physically resides.

For instance, renaming a kernel image, copying a new kernel image into
/boot with the same name as the prior kernel image, and then removing the
old kernel image will put the new kernel image in a different physical
location, even though everything "looks" exactly the same. In fact, lilo
might even still be able to boot the old deleted image if none of its
sectors get overwritten. That's speculation on my part - what is *not*
speculation is that it will not be able to boot the new image because it
knows nothing about it.

The answer is always: "You can never run lilo too many times", or: "When
in doubt, run lilo" :)

I speak from experience: I have forgotten to run lilo more times than
Madonna's dropped her underwear.

OK, I can't resist as this thread is so way off topic anyway...

A geek is walking along a country road trying to find a use for an array
of pointers to arrays of pointers to functions when a noise interrupts his
thoughts. He looks down to see a frog sitting in the road.

The frog says, "Hey, I'm not really a frog but a beautiful woman. A witch
cast a spell on me and turned me into a frog, but if you kiss me, I'll
turn back into a beautiful woman again!"

The geek picks up the frog, looks at it for a moment, smiles, then puts it
in his pocket.

A few muffled cries later, he takes the frog back out of his pocket. The
frog says, "If you kiss me, not only will I turn into a beautiful woman,
but I'll do *anything* you want!" The geek smiles and puts the frog back
in his pocket.

More muffled cries, and he takes the frog back out. The frog says, "If
you kiss me, I'll turn into a beautiful woman, do anything you want *and*
be your slave for a whole year!" The geek smiles and puts the frog back
in his pocket again.

Even more muffled cries, and he takes the frog out again. The frog,
getting a bit annoyed, says, "Listen, buddy, I've told you that if
you kiss me, I'll turn into a beautiful woman, do anything you want and
be your slave for a year. Why aren't you kissing me? What's the
deal here?"

The geek says, "I'm a computer programmer and I'm much too busy for
girlfriends, but, a talking frog - that's cool!"
