Provided you're getting to at least Grub Rescue then it's probably just a case of typing the right magic. Tell us what you see when you type ls. hi, I added to my machine PC P4, running debian and others, ubuntu, pc wireless card :, the same card I used it on other machine, it ran nice. On my machine, the lspci gives : 03:02.0 Class : RaLink rt2561/rt61 802.11g pci (rev ff) On the other machinei have * Ethernet Controller* instead of * Class * I installed the divers firmware-ralink and other realtek . and network-manager, but nothing. on other machine, that was enough to run it correctly. and ifconfig dosn't give wlan0, iwconfig did't give characteristic of wlan0 does this mean that the bios didn't recognize it as a network card thanks for help

OT: BIOS Problem
Problem: Very slow bootup while grub tries repeatedly to get responses from a dead ide slave drive. If the ide slave drive is disconnected bios apparently spends a long time searching for ide drives and grub loads very slowly but, once loaded, boots the system quickly. If I enter bios at power up it has not found the master ide drive and both master and slave are shown as none. Grub must be searching for the drives during its slow load as once it has loaded it boots up the system with master ide drive recognized and useable. History: I had two ide drives, master with windoz and slave with debian. Slave started to die so I added two sata drives and transferred debian to a sata drive. Bios startup was extremely slow when I disconnected the ide slave so I left it connected but with no entry for it in fstab. Many months passed during which I abandoned windoz completely and converted the ide master to an ext3 data drive. Until the last few days bios and grub had no problem with the unused ide slave drive but it must have suffered a further failure which led to the problem discribed above. Setup: ECS KA3 MVP motherboard, debian lenny Possible Fix: Buy cheap ide hard drive and install as ide slave replacing failed drive. This seems unnecessary and stupid. With the sata drives I already have far more storage than I need. Any ideas, Tom

In one case, I was able to simply disable the IDE connection within the BIOS. That BIOS had quite a few non-standard features, and being able to disable certain devices, like the IDE, was a bonus and not likely to be standard. I do not know your motherboard. I also one tried to migrate a Debian install off of a IDE drive and onto a SATA drive (all partitions including grub) and I found it to be really slow. I tried updating grub and a few tricks I found on this group, but I was never able to get it to boot right. The grub prompt came up pretty quick but it took about ~5 minutes to properly load the Linux kernel and start booting. Since everything I had was backed up, I just wiped the system and started over. Worked fine after that. The best we could figure was I had missed some link or pointer and it wasn't happy that it had left IDE. Hope this helps! Intel 440LX und große Festplatte / BIOS-Problem?
Liebe Liste, neulich habe ich versucht, in einen Rechner, von dem ich nur weiß, daß er einen Intel 440LX-Chipsatz hat (erstes Aldi-Modell von 1998) eine 60GB-Festplatte einzubauen. Da Partition-Magic und cfdisk die Platte korrekt erkannten und partitionierten, dachte ich, daß das eigentlich funktionieren sollte - nun gibt's aber folgendes Problem: Der Rechner bleibt nach ca. 1h komplett stehen (kein X, Cursor auf der Console steht) und ist nicht mehr bedienbar. nach Entfernen der Platte scheint alles wieder zu funktionieren. Eine ähnliche Platte zeigte identisches Verhalten. Nun weiß ich, von den 8GB bzw. 32GB-Grenzen der alten BIOSe. Meine Frage ist, ob eine korrekte Partitionierung einer größeren Platte nun Indiz für Funktionsfähigkeit ist, oder nicht? Leider ist im Web anscheinen kein aktualisiertes BIOS erhältlich. Auch an der Hotline konnte man mir nicht weiterhelfen (bei s einem alten Rechner, den ich aber eigentlich nicht einmotten möchte...). Ich habe im Weihnachtsurlaub eine 40GB Platte (Maxtor, 5400) in meinen router/server eingebaut. Ein Bios für Platten 32 gab es dort auch nicht (P200). Ich habe dann den Kompatibilitätsjumper auf der Platte gelassen und einen neuen kernel mit (?CONFIG_STROKE?) gebaut. IIRC stand in der Hilfe von CONFIG_STROKE was, dass es nur für bestimte Platten geht. Aber dieses Jahr habe ich den Rechner noch nicht neu gebootet. Das sollte nichts mit der Grösse zu tun haben. Zur Sicherheit könntest Du nochmal auf IDE-Fehler in /var/log/kernel.log überprüfen. Try re-compiling your kernel with all the apm stuff disabled and also double check the apm settings in your bios. I guess you could see if there is a bios update available too but that should be last. -- Ray
BIOS(?) problem
I've got a problem. Installed slink base on the same IDE disk as win95. Otherwise it works, but. When I tried to install or copy some deb-files from the FAT partition (mounted) into debian partitions, the whole thing crashes at once. The power goes off of the box. It must have something to do with the Award PnP Bios (v0.1A)? It says that it has got ROM PCI/ISA BIOS 2A69JAIC The win95-OS has got an property that the power goes off when I stop win95. (I cannot change this behavior with BIOS seup.) Does this have something to do with the problem? Anybody knows about this anything more? (In the bios setup I've tried all kind of setups to change Power management etc. Nothing helps.) [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I think the BIOS *might* come into play here, though, because if the 3rd disk is not set up in some BIOS'es, the BIOS might not be able to boot from it. It's something that doesn't come into play when booting off floppy, because Linux does not care what's in the BIOS settings when it only needs to mount the disk. The other thing would be making sure the jumper settings are proper, in the case of IDE drives. (Is the 3rd drive a master, single, or slave on its controller?) Again, this would probably not come into play on a floppy boot. At least one of these two things has bitten me before.

Hi, I've just installed Linux, but I can't use LILO: When I reboot I see: L 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 and so on. Does anybody know why? I have Win98 on my primary HD and I've installed Linux on the first partition of my third HD. Thanks. Simone Rapizzi

I assume you installed linux to boot from the HD. If so, it looks as if you Box can only boot up HD1. It looking for Linux there.
