Etch was EOL many years ago. Lenny came next and it is EOL also.
Squeeze is current, and Wheezy will be released within 6 months or so.
Try the Squeeze and Wheezy installers.

2.6.24 is way too old for Ivy Bridge. A little Googling will tell you
that various fixes for Ivy Bridge were still being submitted in Linux
3.5, around June/July 2012 IIRC.

Apparently there are significant differences between Sandy and Ivy
Bridge. I'm not an Intel hardware engineer so I can't say for sure.
Given that Foxconn is an Intel licensee I would think you could contact
Intel engineers directly and ask this question.

What I can say for sure is that you shouldn't be working with EOL
operating systems and kernels on the newest chipset platforms. That's
always a recipe for problems.

I have used sb16 since kernel 2.0
It still works with both oss and alsa in sarge(kernel 2.4):

oss:
isa-pnp isapnp_disable=1
sound

sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1 dma16=5

alsa:
isa-pnp isapnp_disable=1
snd-sb16 isapnp=0

but in etch (kernel 2.6), oss driver works
I pass noisapnp kernel option during boot
but alsa does not work
it should work
but after I reinstall etch
it doesn't work no matter how hard I try

Because it has a different ABI, the package name differs. The -5 and -6

2008-09-30 Thread D Bray
The following is a response which I received off-list. With
permission, I have pasted it below so that it gets recorded within
its rightful thread.

DB

 Hi DB,

I have this very same issue as you wonderfully described on the Debian

Thanks.

(By necessity, the following makes assumptions about your
experience/knowledge. If I over- or under-estimate, please forgive
me.)

 mailing lists:

 http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2008/09/msg01696.html

I can watch DVD, burn to CD, play CD mp3, etc. etc., but I just
*cannot* play any audio CD's at all (basically it appears as if I have
no disc in the CD at all).

Also, as you state, cdparanoia is the *only* application that can see
 the audio CD to rip.

Did you ever find out the kernel configuration that is the cause of
this - I am pulling my hair out here.

Honestly, I did not, and do not, have the time to debug this; I was
looking for only a work-around.
From past experience, and observations over a few days of testing, I
ended up suspecting the kernel. So I simply tried a new kernel.

 BTW, Slackware 12, 2.6.26.5-smp kernel

Hmmm! 2.6.26.5 is exactly what worked for us. It was a generic build,
and so it took its configuration from the running kernel. (And I must
say that I am surprised that Slackware would have such a recent
kernel!)

If you want, you can send me your /boot/config to look at. (Don't post
it here.)

I hope you can help :-)

Honestly, my advice would be to try a few off-the-shelf kernels ie any
packaged kernels which Slackware provides. This would be the least
painful approach. Even if you don't wish to keep those kernels
running, it would at least confirm that a work-around exists via the
kernel.

Or, if you are not using a Slackware-bundled kernel, then download
another kernel from kernel.org and build it. Keep things as generic as
possible ie try not to change the defaults.

If the above does not work out, and no-one else offers a better clue,
then come back and look at the stuff below.

regards,
DB

P.S.
(I have assumed that you've done your google searches and have ruled
out all the generic culprits littered everywhere: file and group
permissions, regions, installing decss, or installing codecs, etc.
Yes, the last 3 don't apply to you.)

More painful approaches include the following, though none is
recommended:

- trying a live CD. Hopefully, this won't necessitate a second drive
  for your audio CDROM! ;-)

- booting from a USB key. Then you can try your audio CDROMs;

- building the relevant libraries and utilities from source. This
would give you the very latest versions, and you could enable debug
  messages.
Note that I had two symptoms: in audio CDROMs, and in video DVDs.
Hence, the libraries were different. However, almost nothing had
changed between the Before and After. Furthermore, in one or two
tests, I saw the ioctl CDROMREADTOCHDR as being attempted for both
media. However, AFAIK, no relevant library had changed _but_ that
the kernel had; hence my focus on the kernel side of the system call
  interface.
(Other readers, note: I've done years of firmware work; I don't
have the time to elaborate on all my thinking and the various
possibilities. So don't bark back from behind the safety of a
  keyboard!)

- custom kernel builds. I.e. toggling various options in the kernel
  build until one works;

- remote debugging the kernel from a second box! ;-)

For the record, I am not at all implying that there is a bug in the
kernel. Not even in its build configurations. Not even in the
libraries. Some of the utilities rely on lower-level utilities, AFAIK;
so that is yet another possibility. If I really wanted to get to the
bottom of this, I'd start with the latter or with the kernel build
configurations.

Note that debian (and perhaps other distros) has forked off the CDROM
work of Jorg Schilling. So some things may be in flux!

Did you look at the Maintainers section of that page?

I'd previously had a quick look at backports web page but had failed to

to /etc/apt/sources.list I've found a much newer kernel which I'm now
attempted to boot into (remotely - fingers crossed).

just to say it did boot into the new kernel, although it didn't pick up
the network and I can't rebuild the nVidia driver (I really should try
'nv' if that works for dual heads)

thanks again, M

If I understand correctly, the etch-and-a-half kernel (2.6.24) should be
available from etch-proposed-updates.

Bootsplash no Etch kernel 2.6.22

2007-07-29 Thread eDUamaral
basta;

inserir um patch disponível em:
http://www.stadtwald21.de/mcbeister/bootsplash/index.html
/usr/src/linux/# patch –p1 bootsplash-3.1.6-2.6.22.diff

Agora ao configurar o novo kernel teremos a opção;
- Device Drivers Graphics Support (*)Bootsplash configuration-bootup splash
screen
Que deverá ser carregada como native.

Agora basta recompilar o kernel.
# fakeroot --initrd --revision=custom.1.0 kernel_image

O instalar o novo kernel gerado em /usr/src/.
# dpkg -i kernel_image.1.0.xxx.deb

Esse processo automatiza a recompilação em Debian.
As dependências são;
- kernel-package
- dialog
- gcc
- patch
- module-init-tools
- fakeroot
- binutils
- initrd-tools
- libncurses5
- libncurses5-dev
- make
- cpp
- Bzip2
- gzip

E finalmente instalar o bootsplash
# apt-get install bootsplash sysv-rc-bootsplash debian-theme-bootsplash

Recompilado o novo kernel, basta alterar /boot/grub/menu.list
Em /boot/grub/menu/list alterar a linha e deixar da seguinte forma;
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.8.1 root=/dev/hda1 ro vga=788 splash=verbose
initrd /boot/initrd-splash

Sendo;
Vga = 785 6540x480
Vga= 788 800x600
Vga=791 1024x768
Vga=1280x1024
Verbose=mostra mensagens
Silent=não mostra mensagens de boot.

Obrigado.

how to build a non-pae xen enabled etch kernel image

Hi list,

i'd like to use non-pae domU kernel images (ie for netbsd) on an etch

What is the proper way to build a non-pae xen kernel image package from
2.6 debian sources ?

[Debian-User] Xen-Etch-Kernel 2.6.18-xen-amd64

2007-02-20 Thread Archive

Here is the scoop from Xen Development regarding AMD.
Thanks, Ted
PS: I will change ADMIN to something else as soon as I can.

Hello Ted,

2. Are there any recent Xen binaries that integrate well with Debian?
There seems to be little to no activity on the Debian-User list.with
only one or two people having successfully established a Xen system.
There also seems to be some kind of problem with the single 686 Xen
package which seems to have replaced an older AMD package which has
disappeared.

we are successfully using xen-hypervisor-3.0.3-1-amd64 on Etch with
kernel 2.6.18-3-xen-amd64. Unfortunately 3.0.4 and other versions will
not be officially available in Etch and I am still seeking a good
alternate repository.

Regards
Bjoern

DEBIAN, UTUTU e oq for. o procedimento padrao é:LEMBRANDO que
o o doc abaixo eh para o kernel 2.6.17.7 COMPILADO e nao a porcaria
modular.
apt-get update Entre no site e baixe a ultima versao para o

#apt-get install patch pronto, agora vc pode patchear

 INSTALE O SEU BOOTSPLASH: #apt-get update #apt-get install bootsplash #apt-get install bootsplash-themas-

Update to a 2.6 Etch kernel

2006-11-26 Thread michael bailey

I currently am running Debian Sarge (2.4.27 kernel)
on an old Abit BE6-II motherboard with a Pentium III
processor. The board appears to be failing now with
frequent freezes, so a new motherboard (ECS RS482-M)
and cpu (AMD Athlon 64) have been acquired.

However, the new motherboard has an intergrated
graphics chip (ATI Express 200) and an ATI SB400
south bridge. This hardware requires at least a
2.6.11 kernel to work. It has been proposed to set up
a 32 bit version of the latest 2.6 kernel from Debian
Etch, as a stable release of Etch is due in December,
on the new motherboard. However on reading the release
notes for Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 (`etch') for an 'x86'
architecture(http://www.debian.org/releases/testing/i386/release-notes/ch-information.en.html),
the following advice was found :-

Chapter 5 - Issues to be aware of for etch)

5.2 Upgrading to a 2.6 kernel
The 2.6 kernel series contains major changes from the
2.4 series. Modules have been renamed and a lot of
drivers have been partially or sometimes almost
completely rewritten. Upgrading to a 2.6 kernel from
an earlier version is therefore not a process to be
undertaken lightly. This section aims to make you
aware of some of the issues you may face.

You are therefore strongly advised not to upgrade to a
2.6 kernel as part of the upgrade from sarge to etch.
Instead, you should first make sure your system works
correctly with either the old kernel or with a 2.4
kernel from etch and do the upgrade to a 2.6 kernel
later as a separate project.

So, it appears that I should first upgrade from the
current Sarge 2.4.27 kernel to a 2.4 Etch kernel, then
from the 2.4 Etch kernel to a 2.6 Etch kernel.

The problem I face is that a 2.4 kernel does not work
on the new motherboard. So does that mean I will
first have to set up the 2.4 and 2.6 Etch kernels on
the old Abit motherboard and then transfer the system
to the new motherboard, or is there a simpler way ?

Again, Sarge was released when there were 2.6 kernel versions lying around.
But the Debian developers decided to include the 2.4 kernel as the default
one. Reason being the kernel was exhaustively tested for stability.

Another reason being that the kernels between 2.6.9 and 2.6.12 were very
wonky because of the CD writing issues.

 Why not a 2.6.18 kernel?

If the OP wants to know what kernel will be shipped with the Official Release
of Debian Etch, then I think its gonna be the 2.6.17 Kernel. Cuz as most of
us already know, whenever an Debian releases a new version, the software is
rigorously tested. So I guess they will keep up wih the already_in_testing
kernel - 2.6.17 (I don't know what sub-version-number will be used though.
2.6.17-2 ..maybe! )

Again, Sarge was released when there were 2.6 kernel versions lying around.
But the Debian developers decided to include the 2.4 kernel as the default

But I guess if the user wants to use some other version of kernel, it maybe
included in the CD too. (tagged as unstable)
For example, the Sarge CDs provide the 2.6.8 (tagged as unstable) kernel.

Amit.

I am even surprised they went this far ahead. When Sarge was released
with 2.6.8, there was already 2.6.11 (three releases back). And Debian
4.0 should be released in December with 2.6.17 and newest is 2.6.18
(only one release back).

I am afraid next release will not be so stable, or they will delay it.
What do you think?

I didn't think the Sarge 2.6 kernel was technically 'unstable' - the
installer gave two options: 2.4 or 2.6; although 2.4 was the default,
there was certainly never any implication that by choosing 2.6 you were
opening yourself to an 'unstable' environment...

there was certainly never any implication that by choosing 2.6 you were
opening yourself to an 'unstable' environment...

Why not both, 2.6.17 default(main) kernel, and optionally 2.6.18.

Yes. Technically speaking, it wasn't 'unstable'. But then its Debian. Whatever

You'd be better off at backports.org.
They have recent kernels built against Sarge.

True. That is the best since the new kernels also require newer:

* initramfstools
* grub
* makedev
* udev

There are probably other packages that I have forgotten.

If you get the deb package it wont install AFAICT due to the libc
upgrade from sarge to etch. You can, however, compile a kernel-source
package from etch/unstable with kernel-package very easily.

If you need any more info google/search the list archives, it comes up
fairly regularly.

power management in etch kernel ?

I've installed etch with default kernel on a laptop

than it did with my customized kernel on sarge.
I added apm=on to the boot options to get apm -s
to work.
Still got heat and battery life issues that sarge didn't have.
Are there more boot options to enable the slower
clock and halt between interrupts kernel features?
Should I be using some other kernel?

but on Etch this package does not seem to exit. However I did find that
  there is a 'linux-tree-2.6.15'.

When and why did Debian move from kernel-tree/image/source to
  Linux-tree/image/source?

I think it was a few months ago, or longer, to allow for the inclusion
of different kernels. This gives you the option of running Debian
GNU/Linux, Debian GNU/BSD or Debian GNU/Hurd. not that any of the
others are ready to got yet. maybe BSD?

That was my guess - and it seems like a perfectly reasonable thing to
do..

However it does seem that it should have been documented somewhere fairly
prominently, given that it obsoletes all the previously existing instructions
both printed and online, Ideally it should have appeared in the official
'how to rebuild your Debian kernel' document which I havn't found yet.

After all, rebuilding your Debian kernel for the first time is not really
something you want to have to do by trial and error.

A short document not much longer than my original posting, but written
by someone involved involved in Debian kernel maintenance, would probably
suffice.

Reproducing my Etch kernel

2006-04-29 Thread Digby Tarvin
I am nearly ready to start customizing my 2.6 kernel for my hardware, but
before I do that I would like to confirm my kernel build procedure by
first reproducing what was left by the installer...

I have searched the web and several books, and all of the instructions
say to obtain the kernel with an 'apt-get install kernel-tree', and I
am sure that 2-3 months ago with Sarge I used
apt-get install kernel-tree-2.6.8
but on Etch this package does not seem to exit. However I did find that
there is a 'linux-tree-2.6.15'.

Is there an up-to-date 'howto' that gives a step by step summary of how
the installed kernel was built from the current Etch repository?

I have managed to build (and am running) a new kernel, but I am sure there
must be a better way than trial and error to work out the procedure.

Here is what I ended up doing:
apt-get install kernel-package
apt-get instal linux-tree-2.6.15
cd ~digbyt/kernel;tar xfj /usr/src/linux-source-2.6.15.tar.bz2
cd linux-source-2.6.15; cp /boot/config-2.6.15-1-686 .config
make-kpkg --rootcmd fakeroot --initrd \
--append-to-version -drst --revision 1 kernel-image
dpkg -i ../linux-image-2.6.15-drst_1_i386.deb
which produces:
-rw-r--r-- 1 digbyt digbyt 15818364 2006-04-29 17:56
../linux-image-2.6.15-drst_1_i386.deb

Does this look reasonable? Why the 'i386' suffix when config was '686'?

Here is the result of my effort in /boot:
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 65416 2006-03-06 12:30 config-2.6.15-1-686
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 65415 2006-04-29 17:05 config-2.6.15-drst
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4684006 2006-04-17 09:00 initrd.img-2.6.15-1-686
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4699957 2006-04-29 18:02 initrd.img-2.6.15-drst
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 680667 2006-03-06 15:31 System.map-2.6.15-1-686
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 680667 2006-04-29 17:55 System.map-2.6.15-drst
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1147143 2006-03-06 15:30 vmlinuz-2.6.15-1-686
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1147157 2006-04-29 17:55 vmlinuz-2.6.15-drst

It looks like a pretty close match, except that my initrd image seems
a little larger than the original.

The newly compiled kernel exhibits one change in behaviour over the
original. My sata CDROM, which I never managed to make work with the
original kernel, is now recognised!
scsi1 : ata_piix
  Vendor: MATSHITA Model: DVD-RAM UJ-832S Rev: 1.01
Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 05

This was one of the reasons for getting ready to reconfigure the kernel,
but I wasn't expecting a recompile with no changes to do the trick???

Anyway, this means I now nolonger need the Ubuntu partitions..

One thing I am not sure of is how to make sure that I apply the same
set of patches as was done with the original kernel. I have seen mention
of an 'applied_patches' files in the top level directory of the kernel
source tree, but no such file seems to exist.

   dpkg -i ../linux-image-2.6.15-drst_1_i386.deb

Looks pretty good to me. I always compile kernel-headers as well for
compiling against later, and modules-image for my extra modules, but you
don't have to.

Does this look reasonable? Why the 'i386' suffix when config was '686'?

In the config menu there is an option to specify the processor family,
check what value this has.

This 386 doesn't specify what the kernel was built for though. This is a
Debian thing for specifying which arch this .deb belongs to (i.e. 386
rather than amd64, ppc etc.)

The newly compiled kernel exhibits one change in behaviour over the
original. My sata CDROM, which I never managed to make work with the

Maybe it was making the initrd again that did the trick, the drivers
might be included now, hence the larger size.

One thing I am not sure of is how to make sure that I apply the same
set of patches as was done with the original kernel. I have seen mention
of an 'applied_patches' files in the top level directory of the kernel
source tree, but no such file seems to exist.

The Debian stock kernels have a bunch of patches applied to them from
the kernel.org versions. The linux-tree package contains these I think,
there is a package (kernel-patch-debian or similar) that contains them
if you want to look.

If you want to apply more patches then make-kpkg does this very nicely.
Packaged patches (e.g. grsecurity2) create a kernel-patches dir next to
the kernel tree where they are stored. Then make-kpkg can be made to
apply all the patches, allow you to configure the kernel, then build it
and unpatch the source, meaning you don't have to remember to patch the
tree everytime you get a new one.

Hope this helps,

James

Hallo Walter,

ROOT=/dev/hda

Debian Etch, Kernel 2.6.12-smp, Asus P4C800E und CDROM's

2005-10-29 Thread Ralph Stens

Hallo Leute,

MfG

Ralph
