Hi Scott, Bob, and others ... OKay, here's at least *some* of the information I forgot in my first email ... First of all, it all happens locally, without any network connection whatsoever, or only a connection to my second (old) box. This second box is set up nearly identically (at least as far as I can see), and works. My hosts file looks like this --- start of /etc/hosts --- 127.0.0.1 localhost 10.1.1.1smrgol.2b1.de smrgol --- end of /etc/hosts snipped --- The following two files are identical on both boxes. --- start of /etc/resolv.conf --- domain 2b1.de nameserver 134.100.33.240 nameserver 134.100.9.61 nameserver 151.189.0.65 nameserver 151.189.13.35 --- end of /etc/resolv.conf --- --- start of /etc/host.conf --- order hosts, bind multi on --- end of /etc/host.conf --- I have no DNS server running locally, only when I'm connected to the net (thruogh a modem). Does this help? Hi y'all, I've got some trouble with DNS and exim, and I hope someone'll be able to help me on my way ... I am running a testing version of Debian right now, but the problem was there even when running Debian 2.2r0. OK, so now what happens? if I try to telnet smrgol smtp (with smrgol being my local host) it takes about half a minute until I get the "... connected to ..." message, and about the same time until I get the exim greeting. If I, instead, use the IP address, I am instantly connected, and then it takes some time to start exim. (BTW, exim is handled by inetd). Any ideas where the problem might be? kind regards, Ingo -- YES! That's just me, just being!http://www.2b1.de/ We ARE all ONE --- [EMAIL PROTECTED] --- We ARE all FREE

IIRC you want to masquerade as the isp domain, but configure your mailer to NOT accept mail for that domain. I think I had to turn off the option to rewrite unqualified address as well... so if you send mail to it gets delivered locally, but if you send to @ispdomain it gets sent to the smarthost. However, I'm not sure how to do that with exim. I get this error so I assume it's not sending these through the "Smarthost" [EMAIL PROTECTED]: unknown local-part "foxx" in domain "mosquitonet.com" [EMAIL PROTECTED] is his username at our ISP. And since exim thinks my box is called mosquitonet.com it looks only on my server for a username of foxx, finds none and pukes. > > If you have problems, your call for help is usually more effective, if > you send some hard facts, like error mails you received from some MTA > and the relevant parts form log file. How should it query the smarthost for the recipient? You send the mail , how should the smarthost know to whom you want send mail to, if your MTA doesn't tell it? If you have problems, your call for help is usually more effective, if you send some hard facts, like error mails you received from some MTA and the relevant parts form log file. Without the complete error message, it is just guesswork, which is a waste of time. Ciao, Martin
Exim troubles
Man! Exim is really pissing me off! I just upgraded and now I can't send mail to any addresses at my ISP, I have to "masquerade" my box as my ISP so mail will get through to any addresses but if I do exim doesn't query the "Smart host" for the recipient name. I don't know what to do I have gone through exim.conf a billion times and restarted my daemons to no avail. Anyone else have this problem? If so did you fix it? If so how? Am I going insane? This stubborn bastard worked before with same conf file. Any help is greatly appreciated. -- Debian / GNU Linux: An OS the way god intended it; 32Bit, multi-tasking, Rock Solid Stable, and always getting better.
