exim troubles - HELO

2003-09-25 Thread Monique Herman
So I go to subscribe to the slrn-user mailing list ... it sends me a
confirmation email ... I reply to it and get the following complaint
from exim:

This message was created automatically by mail delivery software (Exim).
A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its
recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed:
  [EMAIL PROTECTED]
SMTP error from remote mailer after HELO toadstool:
host mail.sourceforge.net [66.35.250.206]: 550 Don't like your
HELO/EHLO. Hostname must contain a dot.

So I telnet to port 25 of my machine and sure enough:

220 toadstool ESMTP Exim 3.36 #1 Tue, 23 Sep 2003 19:19:50 -0600

All references to my hostname in exim.conf are fully-qualified.
The line in /etc/hostname is fully qualified.
There was a line in /etc/hosts referring to simply 'toadstool', but I
changed that to the fully-qualified name, restarted exim, and still the
same deal.
Would I need to restart any process, or heaven forbid reboot the
machine, to get this working?
How can I get exim to report the fully-qualified name?

Thanks in advance for any advice you kind folk might be able to give me!

Good.

sure it does! as i said, in my current configuration of mozilla on linux
as well as my windows configuration, the same nt box acts as an smtp server!

Also, you should fix that sender address --
you'll never get a bounce unless it originates on your own machine.
With the eximconfig-generated config, you can fix the sender address
by putting
   sandip: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
in /etc/email-addresses.

i will do that.

If you go to the NT box, can you ping "deshmukh.work"? I suspect you
won't be able to, and that's why you can't get bounce messages -- no
machine knows who your machine is!

i agree with you. i also think i wont be able to ping deshmukh.work from
the nt box. now, how do i tackle this problem? because an entry in
/etc/aliases in local machine wont help - am i right?

If that is the *entire* exim.conf that you posted then you have many,
many things missing. Start over. Run eximconfig, choose smart host,
give the NT smart host IP address for the smart host. Edit the created
conf file, change bydns_a to byname.

Sandip> - what are message is frozen messages?

Messages are frozen if they cannot be delivered due to a possibly
transient error. The command 'exim -bp' will show you all the messages
on your queue, with the frozen ones clearly identified. The command
'exim -Mrm' can be used to clean them out. The eximon X application
provides an easier way to do this. I suggest you clean out all frozen
messages before you do any tests.

Sandip> - what do i need to do so that i am able to send messages
Sandip> using exim?

I'm beginning to wonder myself :-) At least I'm learning a lot about
exim from your questions.

Like I said, start with a clean file generated by eximconfig. Try
exactly one message. If it fails, use 'exim -bt' and other options to
determine why.

By the way, I noticed in your exim log that the "From" addresses had a
domain part. How did you get that set up?

Cheers!

Since these messages are frozen, exim isn't going to try doing
anything with them. That's the definition of "frozen". Use
'exim -qff' to force exim to attempt a delivery of the frozen

Messages are frozen if a really fatal error occurs causing delivery to

In this case you tried another test message. You created it the same
way as the others, except this time it wasn't destined for a local
user. exim successfully connected to the smarthost (190.168.100.1)
and it accepted responsibility for the message.

| i do not know what are start queue run

Any mailserver has a queue of messages to process. SMTP is a
store-and-forward system. That means each node in the network
receives the entire data set, stores it locally, then forwards it to
the appropriate destination when the time is right. As a result, exim
needs to perform a "queue run" periodically -- it needs to go through
each message on the queue and decide what to do with it now and then
do it.

| and what messages are frozen.

You can get some more info on the frozen messages by running 'mailq'.
If they aren't too old, then running 'exigrep' on the log files will
show you the error message from the error which caused them to be
frozen. Alternatively, force a delivery attempt and watch the log for
the error message.

Re: dns and exim troubles ...

2001-10-17 Thread Ingo Hohmann
Hi Scott, Bob, and others ...

OKay, here's at least *some* of the information I forgot
in my first email ...

First of all, it all happens locally, without any network
connection whatsoever, or only a connection to my second
(old) box. This second box is set up nearly identically
(at least as far as I can see), and works.

My hosts file looks like this

--- start of /etc/hosts ---
127.0.0.1 localhost
10.1.1.1smrgol.2b1.de smrgol
--- end of /etc/hosts snipped ---

The following two files are identical on both boxes.

--- start of /etc/resolv.conf ---
domain 2b1.de

nameserver 134.100.33.240
nameserver 134.100.9.61
nameserver 151.189.0.65
nameserver 151.189.13.35
--- end of /etc/resolv.conf ---

--- start of /etc/host.conf ---
order hosts,bind
multi on
--- end of /etc/host.conf ---

I have no DNS server running locally, only when I'm
connected to the net (thruogh a modem).

Does this help?

Thanks so far,

Ingo

cat /etc/resolv.conf

what dows it say ? it should point to a working DNS

to check if that DNS is up and running:

nslookup - x.y.w.z

where x.y.w.z is the IP address of the named daemon you are pointing to

at the > prompt ask to resolve your hostname (fully qualified ending with a

if the DNS (named) is on your box, check that the process is up

ps -ef |grep bind

and/or do

netstat -an |grep 53

and verify that you have a listening socket on tcp and udp port 53.

dns and exim troubles ...

2001-10-17 Thread Ingo Hohmann
Hi y'all,

I've got some trouble with DNS and exim, and I hope someone'll
be able to help me on my way ...

I am running a testing version of Debian right now, but the
problem was there even when running Debian 2.2r0.

OK, so now what happens?

if I try to

  telnet smrgol smtp

(with smrgol being my local host) it takes about half a minute
until I get the "... connected to ..." message, and about the
same time until I get the exim greeting.

If I, instead, use the IP address, I am instantly connected,
and then it takes some time to start exim.

(BTW, exim is handled by inetd).

Any ideas where the problem might be?

kind regards,

Ingo

The configuration file format has changed a bit since 2.x (the version
in Slink). The automatic script should handle it without any problems
(it worked for me), but you probably ought to give it a once over.
Check that there aren't any error messages resulting from reading the
config file, use -bt to test that the right thing is happening.

If you are using one of the standard configs, rerunning eximconfig
should do the job.

Have you got mosquitonet.com in local_domains or anything? Your machine
looks like it's trying to accept all mail for mosquitonet.com, which is
wrong. If you must use your mosquitonet address locally, do it using
rewriting rules.

I upgraded too and had all sorts of problems. Apparently my eximconfig
file was updated automatically during installation, but there were still
problems. The answer for me was to downgrade to version 2.11-4 and put
that package on hold. If it works .

I had this problem before, with smail and sendmail... IIRC you want to
masquerade as the isp domain, but configure your mailer to NOT accept
mail for that domain. I think I had to turn off the option to
rewrite unqualified address as well... so if you send mail to
it gets delivered locally, but if you send to @ispdomain
it gets sent to the smarthost. However, I'm not sure how to do that
with exim.

Hope this helps (in some vague kind of way),

Mike

I get this error so I assume it's not sending these through the "Smarthost"
  [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
unknown local-part "foxx" in domain "mosquitonet.com"

[EMAIL PROTECTED] is his username at our ISP. And since exim thinks my box
is called mosquitonet.com it looks only on my server for a username of foxx,
finds none and pukes.

What upgrade? From which version to which?

How should it query the smarthost for the recipient? You send the mail
, how should the smarthost know to whom you want send mail to, if your
MTA doesn't tell it?

If you have problems, your call for help is usually more effective, if
you send some hard facts, like error mails you received from some MTA
and the relevant parts form log file.

Without the complete error message, it is just guesswork, which is a
waste of time.
