Linux file server in Windows & Macintosh environment

2002-10-22 Thread Fabien Holler
Hi everyone,

I configured Samba on my Linux file server, and it works just fine for
Windows clients.
But I have also 2 Macintosh clients in my network, and I don't know what to
do for them...
Does the samba package allow to communicate with Mac too, or do I need
another package? Which one?

Thank you very much
Fabien

Fabien,

Supposedly Linux will support the Appletalk protocol, so you could try that
route. Another option would be to check out Dave which is an SMB client for
the Macintosh http://www.thursby.com . Of course it is not open source
software and there is a cost. Of course if you are running OS X then there
are some other options native to the OS.

Good Luck,

Yes, it does. Install netatalk and your Linux machine will show up in
the Chooser. Netatalk can do both file and printer sharing, too, which
means you can do neat things like use a parallel-port printer from an
iMac.

Macs running Jaguar can see windows shares, so presumably they'll have
no problem connecting to a samba server. I don't know about other Mac
OSes though.

Look in to netatalk. Free, open source, provides AppleShare file and
print services. It can be either an AppleTalk server or an AppleShare IP
server. Setting up TCP/IP-only is a lot easier than setting up
AppleTalk, if your Macs can use it (I think it's standard on Mac OS 8.5
and newer, but I could be wrong) that's the way to go.

Of course, OS X is a lot easier since it's chock full of UNIXy
goodness... And I think it actually ships with the necessary client
software for mounting your existing Samba shares.
