We do hundreds rather than thousands, but we do them:

- with an existing configuration automation system (chef/cinc)

- in-place upgrades

- in tiers, where a given function (e.g. web servers) will have
  representative machines in each tier, starting with a very
  small proof-of-concept upgrade, followed by corrections; then
  a somewhat larger upgrade group, followed by all the rest of
  the machines.

Automated monitoring, too.

And yes we just experienced a p0 accident which affected 100 millions 
end users. (There is maybe already the news on internet.) So we are 
taking serious consideration on hiring a consultant for our system 
upgrading.

3. I'd then do a rolling deploy that slowly takes Debian 11 servers
   out of service and re-provisions them as Debian 12. I would not
   try to upgrade anything in place. Although Debian supports that,
   at scale I find it harder to account for all variables than with
   a clean install, and if you already have automation to deploy and
   configure a host then an in-lace upgrade also takes longer in my
   experience.

Something to chat to your consultancy about, anyway.

It would be really interesting if you or your consultant would write
up what you ended up doing.

That may cost nothing: you may find that the university maths/computer
science faculties may have enough interested students to start.

Something like an OpenVPN connection - again, you might want to use
a Pi as a gateway - or just pay for a virtual private server at a hosting
company?

Also - if you have no money, start small. You may even be able to pick
up a couple of dead desktop systems and build one good one / become
friends with your local compauter repair person. Something small to 
get your own experience up: as you build up experience, document each step
you take, configuration files etc. and share them / help others with problems: 
"a mind is a terrible
thing to waste" and if you can help other people, you often find that as you
explain things, your understanding deepens.**

** This is very much like discussing maths with a fellow student and helping
them: you can help them use their own mind to derive solutions - don't do 
everything for them and deprive them of knowledge and explanation but, 
similarly, don't do all their homework for them :) Similarly, it helps
to be systematic and lay out your working so that others can see how
you reached a conclusion.

For your situation, I suggest that you get a 14" or 15" laptop with 
Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, a 4+ core CPU with virtualization support, 8+ GB 
of dual-channel memory, and a 256+ GB SSD.  Get a 1+ TB external SSD or 
HDD with the fastest connection the laptop supports, and put your data 
on it.  Install virtualization software and create Debian virtual 
machines (VM).  Get a backpack with a laptop compartment and carry it 
all around with you.



Note that you don't need a new or expensive laptop.  I have a Dell 
Latitude E6520 that was near top-of-the line in ~2011, but sells for 
US$150~200 today.  It is my primary workstation; I use it daily.  While 
older machines are bulkier and heavier, and the batteries do not last 
very long, they are easier to modify and upgrade than newer laptops. 
And, now that Microsoft has declared Windows 11 will not support 
machines prior to Intel Core 8th generation, the price of older x86 
computers has dropped even more.



It is not wise to host Internet services on a home server.  If and when 
you want an Internet presence, get a virtual private server (VPS). 
Prices range from free to very expensive, depending upon provider and plan.



I live in California, USA.  Graduate programs here typically require 
students to obtain a certain number of graduate-level courses in their 
department, plus some number of upper-division or graduate courses 
outside their department.  If your university has a computer science 
(CS) department, perhaps you could take CS courses and apply them 
towards your Ph.D..

We ran thousand-person mailing lists on a microVAX 3500 with a
then-astonishing 32MB of RAM and an 11 MHz CPU.

A Raspberry Pi 4b has much more compute power, faster storage,
and 50-100x faster networking, to go with 200x the RAM.

For learning about running servers and doing non-commercial
work, Pis and old desktops and laptops are excellent machines.

Some of the statements in this thread have been quite exaggerated.
You can run a mailing list on a 486.  (I mean, you *could* back when
you could actually run Linux on a 486... no modern Linux kernels support
that old CPU any more.)

At its heart, a mailing list service is quite simple, and does not use
a lot of resources.  You need an MTA, of course, which is configured to
receive and send (and therefore queue up) email.  Then you just need a
mailing list program which is invoked when a designated address receives
a new email.  The typical action will be "queue up a bunch of outgoing
messages", and then the MTA sends them out.

It only needs a few megabytes of RAM, and not much CPU.  The bottleneck
on a mailing list service will be the time spent waiting on network I/O
while talking to other mail servers (and DNS) around the world.  Not local
memory or CPU.

Things only get complicated if you try to do spam detection.  Which, to
be fair, you probably would want if it's an open mailing list publicized
to the world.  If it's a private mailing list that you only maintain for
communications with your family or whatever, you probably don't need it.
Simply disallow incoming messages from non-subscribed addresses.

If you're "swamping" a modern desktop PC by running a small- to medium-sized
mailing list, you've probably done something very, very wrong.

A web server with static content is pretty light as well.  Obviously it
will depend on how many "clicks" you get per day, and what kind of content
you're offering (i.e. how big the pages are), but a small web server that
gets, let's say, a thousand hits per day (that's about one hit every minute)
will not even place a noticeable load on a modern desktop or laptop PC.

On a busier web server, the bottleneck will often be your upload speed,
especially if you have larger files (images, audio, video, large data
sets).  The amount of RAM and CPU used for static content is still quite
small, but you can easily max out a typical home Internet's upload speed.
I believe Gene has experienced this.

I agree with Dan (on the strongly disagree).

Further, I would mention that the way some people used to do this was to have 
sort of two levels of firewall protection.  They had strong firewall (or 
similar) protection for their personal computer / network, and then the server 
(for public use) sat outside that firewall, possibly with a less restrictive 
firewall in front of it.

I vaguely think I remember a phrase like "demilitarized zone" for (iirc) the 
area outside your personal computer / network.

I never did this.  For a little while, a long time ago, I ran a server just 
for my home network (with no public access).

Which reminds that you have to make sure that hosting a personal
server doesn't violate terms of service from one's ISP (Internet
service provider). It depends on the type of connection, that kind of
thing. It would byte to have to go scrambling for a new way to
continue an existing setup with established traffic if one is suddenly
shut down for unknowingly violating those terms.

Just thinking out loud.. and my apologies in advance if that subject
was already mentioned. :)

There may already be a Linux User Group (LUG) near you. If there is one
in Turkey, I would expect to find it in Istanbul or Ankara.

Running your own server is an excellent learning opportunity. There is
plenty of inexpensive hardware available, new and used. You might also
check with local universities or colleges for donations of hardware for
a good cause. Also, check for surplus sales at local companies,
universities, and colleges.

The other costs are your Internet connection, your electricity bill,
and your time maintaining it.

Two comments:

1.  If you want to make the server available, via the net, you need to 
look at something like Dynamic DNS.  Broadband services tend to 
periodically reassign your IP address.


2.  If you have any expectation of providing any services - even 
something as basic as hosting an email list, you can easily swamp a 
desktop/laptop class machine.  You probably want to look at something 
Xeon based.


Personally, I've been looking rather longingly at the Intel NUC 9 Pro - 
which provides a huge amount of capability in a mini-pc chassis.  
Basically, a workstation class mini-pc.  Of course, it's hard to get 
one's hands on them these days, and a well-loaded system will easily set 
you back $2-3000.  You can get some comparable, Supermicro mini-itx 
boxes for a bit less.

The best place to learn to run a web server is at home.
Preferably with a good, tested backup solution and no sensitive
data on the same machine.

The entire point of UNIX and UNIX-like systems is that at any
moment, a user may suddenly become a programmer or a sysadmin,
and this is fully supported behavior.

If you have internet connectivity and want to experiment, you can fire up
smaller Amazon AWS (cloud) instances for less than 1 day for no cost. You
can keep large data long term in their S3 storage buckets for nearly zero
cost. You can pay month to month.

I haven't been on Google cloud for 3 or 4 years. But they used to be
cheaper than AWS.

I'll add that running a server at home as some security implecation.
The server would need to be properly secured (firewall, hardening of
services...).

In general, I would not advise to have a web server publically available

I also have an AWS ARM LAMP server that has probably better performance 
than my MV2. It costs me under USD $10 per month and has really good 
data speed maybe 5Gbps - my MV2 is limited by my internet connection to 
20 Mbps upload. The AWS server only has 2G RAM and 8G disk, but both can 
be expanded at nominal cost

Seeing that reason of troubles with crashes, malfunctions, cursor delay etc
with my exmac was simply that Polyna might be right; that my mac 2,1 uses
EFI not Bios to boot. Why? Cos it works with Linux Mint that only uses EFI
in the distro I'm using. I've dual booted the machine to be able to test
out Mint contra  Debian contra Devuan, with EFI.
And: 1 swallow doesn't make a summer, so 1 asshole doesn't make this
helpsite a shithole. Excuse my French, sir, but that is the best
description I can give to that behavior of yours, calling a row of people
possible trolls out of relatively thin air. Should I be tolerant to an
intolerant or shallow thinker? Yes. But not when those thoughts comes out
in slandering words partially behind my back and partially into my face.
But there should also be consequences to my behaviour of abusing this site
for entire articles that mostly talk a LOT about close to zero.
And then slander quite harshly at a guy who just pointed out a possibility
based on logic a la " If it walks, talks & looks like a duck, it's
probably a duck." Added some "Unusual = Crazy"; which probably is
judgementality
And can lead to an idea that "Low Linux knowledge=Unusual (here)=Craziness
& should be adjusted or told off." Resembles Adolf Hitler's paranoias, or
not ?
Back to my slanders: I take a break to learn enough to be able to define an
IT challenge before I ask for help; at least read a bit to see if I already
have the answer to my question/s. I recall from a recent course I failed:
If I hadn't read the obligatory text/s before the lecture on it, I was all
questions; totally unteachable. If I was prepared (default modus), I was
listening; all. teachable.
So I'll sit back for reading up, training (ex-broken back; can't much sit,
a challenge as reader), or work in some real production.

what is the hardware you want to use with GNU/Linux?

At the beginning you mentioned macOS 8.6 and after that macOS 10.13.6 ???

What do you want to do with GNU/Linux? You mentioned writing software
but what does this mean - software for writers like LibreOffice or
anything else?

if you are looking for high quality software then I would recommend
Debian, Ubuntu LTS releases or something based on them. Rolling release
distributions often are low quality software - they usually have more bugs.

A live usb with debian 10.9 buster did it asked to change from Bios boot to
Uefi boot & reinstalled hdd. Laptop works. So now can put distro in usb, &
try which debian based distro works best on Mac osx 10.13.6. MX, PsychOS,
Manjaro, Debian?
I liked the software setup in Psychos; many writing tools in it.

Unfortunately, I do not remember exactly. It was about two months ago and my 
first Debian installation ever. 
I remember installing from the Buster live USB stick because I had to change 
in /etc/apt/sources.list to enable testing. Also I used the "Advanced 
Graphical Installer" in order to select KDE as the desktop environment during 
installation.

I have another computer here that I'm planning to install on in a week or so. 
I will try to reproduce it on that one.

As far as I know the live image is using the Calamares installer, which 
is different than the Debian Installer.

In case you can reproduce this kindly report a bug against the calamares 
package, it probably shouldn't allow selecting a locale that doesn't 
exist (in the final system).

The selection of the non-existent en_SE.UTF-8 locale was made during the 
installation process.

Although I think I will go for creating en_SE.UTF-8, this response clears out 
some questions. I think I can how I should deal with locales now.

There is no such locale in the "dpkg-reconfigure locales" list on
my buster system.

Can you explain how you managed to do that?

Right now im trying the latest daily (for arm64, but it shouldn't 
matter) and if I select Language: English and Country: Sweden the 
installer is telling me this locale doesn't exist and presents me with a 
list to chose from that doesn't include en_SE.

The list of locales supported should be in /usr/share/i18n/SUPPORTED
The locales themselves are defined in /usr/share/i18n/locales/*, so
check the ones you want are defined. (My buster has sv_SE.UTF-8,
for example, but not en_SE.UTF-8.)

That should be the case: they're both existing locales.

I don't think the English-speaking community in El Salvador is large
enough to have come up with en_SV.UTF-8. There is an es_SV.UTF-8
locale, as the majority there speak Spanish.

Those are the standard locales for Swedes in Sweden and Americans
in the US, and are configurable.

How much changes for you when you run your software using these
two locales? Which one suits your software the best? You might find
that you don't have to set them all to the same value, eg LC_CTYPE
for changing letter case, and LC_MESSAGES for error messages etc.

I can see now that I have one locale in the console environment and one in the 
desktop environment. this clears out some confusion. Thank you.

No, that is not the problem, sorry for being unclear. It has nothing to do 
with Python. The problem is that the script crashes (when setting LC_ALL) when 
run with the locale set to en_SV.UTF-8. If I use sv_SE.UTF-8 or en_US.UTF-8 it 
works fine. What could be the cause for this?

Setting any of the LC_* variables to an empty string sounds like an
incredibly bad idea.  I have absolutely no idea what that does, but it
can't be good.  Don't do that.

If you're trying to customize your locale, your best bet is to play
around *outside* of any desktop environment, because some of them have
a nasty tendency to override whatever you do, or make various combinations
and tweaks completely impossible.

Once you've got the variables working the way you like with a regular
shell login (or regular X11 session running a plain window manager),
then you can try to duplicate that setup in your desktop environment.

If your actual issue is "when I'm working inside my python virtual
environment, shit breaks" then I'm afraid I can't help you much with that.
Maybe someone else on this list knows about locales inside python venvs,
or maybe you could seek help from a python list.

Please, be aware that KDE uses Qt for its locale settings. This does 
*not* correspond with the "plain" locale setting of your system outside 
of KDE, hence the differences.

You'll probably have to disable Secure Boot, but otherwise the
installation should not be diferent from BIOS systems. The installer
will detect the use of UEFI and select the correct version of grub.

Thanks for your response. I ended up dealing with the problem by
switching to wicd, but the incident has helped me learn some things
about keyrings. I think my real problem was the one where you flounder
around to the point of desperation looking for a quick fix, instead of
taking the trouble to first get an understanding of the context, in
this case the basic functions of keyrings, before attempting to fix a
specific problem.

The "files" are actually sockets so the leading 's' is apparently
required.

If it were my box I'd fix that gnome-keyring error first, since if I
remember correctly, that's where your wifi password gets stored (which
nm-applet uses) Try this:

about a week ago i posted a question to which no one has responded. i
think it's a reasonable question for this list. clearly folks on this
list don't think it's worthwhile to respond to it. can anyone here at

I installed wheezy a week ago (with the installer which includes
xfce), and nm-applet was working fine. But today it won't start and
gives the message:

Request for help: AMD microcode update testing

Debian users with AMD processors, hello!

I am the Debian Developer responsible for the amd64-microcode package, which
deploys microcode updates to AMD x86-64 processors, fixing several processor
bugs and on a few processors, enhancing "perf" functionality.

Unfortunately, there is a _kernel_ bug that is causing some annoyances,
which I'd like to track down as soon as possible.  However, I cannot track
it down without help because I don't have access to any box with an AMD
processor.

So, I need help from someone with an AMD microprocessor that both:

1. Is willing to compile/install and test a few kernel versions;

2. Has a BIOS+processor combination which was updated by the amd64-microcode
   update package in Debian stable.

The testing requires updating the processor microcode, so it cannot be done
on a VM, it has to be done on bare-metal.


The kernel issue seems to be:
  Two [sucessful] AMD processor microcode updates in a row cause the kernel
  to hang the process that initiated the microcode update.

  (the hung process can be killed normally with ^C or kill -9).


If you're willing to test, below is a list of the steps required.  Do note
you're testing a kernel bug, so please don't do it unless you're confortable
with a chance of things going wrong and requiring a hard reset (that
should't happen, but better safe than sorry).

All steps need to be run as root.  I will need to know the exact steps where
the hangs happen.

Note: different versions of the amd64-microcode package can be downloaded
from http://snapshot.debian.org/package/amd64-microcode/


I'd appreciate if you test the Debian kernels in Stable and wheezy-backports
(the latest 3.2 and 3.10 kernels).  It would also be very helpful if you can
test kernel 3.5.2 from www.kernel.org (which is know to be broken).


Step 1:  Run with BIOS microcode:

  1.1. purge the amd64-microcode package
  1.2. reboot. 
  1.3. cat /proc/cpuinfo > /tmp/step1-log.txt

Step 2: Do the first microcode update:

  2.1. modprobe microcode

  2.2. install the amd64-microcode package from Debian stable
   (versions 1.20120910-2 or 2.20120910-1~bpo70+1)

  ** IF THE PACKAGE INSTALL LOOKS LIKE IT HANG, SEE "it hang" BELOW **

  2.3. for kernels 3.0 to 3.5 do this:

   echo -n 1 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/microcode/reload

   for kernels 3.6 and later, do this:

   echo -n 1 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/microcode/reload

  ** IF THIS HANGS: try to interrupt with ^C, and if that doesn't work,
 use a second terminal to kill the hung process with kill -9.
  
  2.4. dmesg -c | grep microcode > /tmp/step2-log.txt

Step 3: Do the second microcode update in a row:

  3.1. install the amd64-microcode package from Debian testing/unstable
   (version 2.20131007.1+really20130710.1)

  ** IF THE PACKAGE INSTALL LOOKS LIKE IT HANG, SEE "it hang" BELOW **

  3.2. for kernels 3.0 to 3.5 do this:

   echo -n 1 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/microcode/reload

   for kernels 3.6 and later, do this:

   echo -n 1 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/microcode/reload

  ** IF THIS HANGS: try to interrupt with ^C, and if that doesn't work,
 use a second terminal to kill the hung process with kill -9.
  
  3.3. dmesg -c | grep microcode > /tmp/step3-log.txt

Step 4: Cleanup

  If you got a hang on step 2, please purge the amd64-microcode package,
  and wait until the problem is fixed.  I will report back to this thread.
  Alternatively, you can switch to a kernel that doesn't have the problem.

  If you got a hang on step 3, you can use the "add exit 0 to postinst"
  workaround discribed in bug #716917:

** IT HANG **

If you experience hangs, please note the exact step where it happened, and
if possible, please press Sysrq+t and Sysrq+w on the keyboard: that will log
a lot of information to /var/log/kern.log that will help track down the bug
inside the kernel.

After you did that, you can kill the hung process, it will be stuck on state
"D" like this:

ps ax | grep amd64-microcode
 4237 pts/2S+ 0:00 /bin/sh /var/lib/dpkg/info/amd64-microcode.postinst 
configure 2.20120910-1
 4243 pts/2D+ 0:00 /bin/sh /var/lib/dpkg/info/amd64-microcode.postinst 
configure 2.20120910-1

(the version at the end can be different).  Kill the process in D state.

You can force the package to finish installing itself by doing this:

   (echo '#!/bin/sh' ; echo 'exit 0' ) > 
/var/lib/dpkg/info/amd64-microcode.postinst
   chmod +x /var/lib/dpkg/info/amd64-microcode.postinst
   dpkg --pending --configure


** SENDING ME THE DATA **

If you got any hangs, I'd appreciate the logs.  Please send them to me
*directly* (and not to the mailing-list), and if possible compress them
first (with something like gzip, bzip2 or xz).  I also need to know the
exact steps where the kernel hang.

The logs are in /tmp/step*-log.txt, and /var/log/kern.log.

Or at least give more explanations about your error. Saying "I can not
browse other pages" is like... well, imagine you know cars very well, and
some guy come and say: "help me, my car does not work. What should I do?".

Looking for help with maintainance of a package

Dear people,

I am the maintainer of hfsprogs, which is a package taken from Apple's
Darwin code that provides a mkfs.hfs{,plus} and, more importantly,
fsck.hfs{,plus}.

Unfortunately, the present version has problems not being 64-bit clean
and, as a result, I had to restrict the list of architectures to those
that are 32 bit only.

This has been reported as bug #436159 on our bug tracking system. As I
myself have all the interest to have this package available on as many
architectures as possible (since, in particular, I use an amd64 machine,
but keep some of my data/backups on external HDs formatted with HFS+),
it would be ideal to have it as arch: any.

But alas, it is not. :-( It won't compile without a number of patches
and I have already got Gentoo's patch as a starting point for the
package. But it would be better to have it divided as a series of
independent patches (as I already use quilt to manage the patches). I
have already started doing this.

Seeing that Apple has released a new version to match their Leopard
release, it would be a good thing to keep the patches separate as some
parts will apply nicely while others are obsolete now (the code has
changed a bit, but not much).

As I posted on ubuntuforums.org [*], for this goal, I would like to see
if there are interested developers so that I would create a project on
Alioth to maintain patches that are team-maintained and which would
clean up miscoding, warnings, consistency, correctness and, perhaps,
submit them upstream so that we can reduce our work in the future (and
have a more solid filesystem for exchange of data between computers).

I have already made a package yesterday that uses the 32-bit emulation
of amd64 to have a functioning fsck.hfsplus program and I plan on
uploading it to experimental, but it is based on older source code, not
on the new upstream version (let's move one step at a time).

So, that is it. If you have interest and know of more people interested
in this (like Ubuntu people), please let me know. BTW, as I am not
subscribed to any specific Debian list nowadays (besides
-devel-announce), I would appreciate CC's.

yes, I'm aware of debtags. I'm also aware of popsuggest, which has very much
the same purpose of my system. However, debommender recommends packages
based on package descriptions, and similarity between users, as of know. I
intend to include support for tags-based recommendations, but haven't been
able to find the time.

AFAIK, your problem is likely related to the alternatives that Debian
uses.  I would check what your default x-web-browser is with the
update-alternatives command.  This is most likely set to Konqueror.

You can see which are available by issuing the command (as root)

update-alternatives --list x-www-browser

To change the default browser for the system, use:

update-alternatives --set x-www-browser /usr/bin/iceweasel

That should take care of your problem.

First i'd like to thank you for the help concerning the problem with email-adresses opening in evolution when using iceweasel on kde. 
This problem is now fixed after selectingthe right entries in /usr/share/applications/default-applications.desktop


But i've got a similar problem when clicking on links in my mails in icedove. 
This links always open in Konqueror, altough i've set the standard browser in 
kde's configuration screen to iceweasel. The standard browser for gnome is now 
iceweasel as well (set in /usr/share/applications/default-applications.desktop).

But links still open in Konqueror, when klicking on them in icedove (or the kde 
helpsystem per example).

Any hints?

Call for help on making a LILO bootscreen for Etch

Docbook is broken, where do I ask for help? Bug#318817

Hi,

I'm running Debian Sarge, having started maybe
a year ago when it was still testing.  Some
months ago docbook broke.  I worked around it
for a while but eventually filed a bug report:

  When I generate any sort of output from docbook I get

(And, I can't generate pdf output.)

Although I apparently did not file it for the right
package the maintainer helped me anyway, reaching
the conclusion that a catalog was not right.

Here's the md5sum for my catalog, I'd appreciate
knowing if it's different from anybody else's
catalog.

$ md5sum /usr/share/xml/docbook/schema/dtd/4.3/catalog.xml

The bug supposedly got transferred to the right
maintainer, but it was closed by the original maintainer
when he found the problem was not in his package.

I don't want to keep submitting the same bug over
and over to different packages until I get lucky.

What should I do?  Do other Sarge users have
problems with docbook/xmlto/xsltproc?
I suspect maybe there's just a dependency that's
not installed (and not recommended by the installed
packages?)

I really do need to get docbook working.

After first problems my MBOX-Project [1] is running OK and now I search 
for content.

First goal of the project is to install a central possibility to gather 
lost messages from mailing-lists which did not reach the recipient for 
various reasons (missconfigured eMail-Clients/-Servers [2], 
network-hickups).

The testphase in 2004 was well and after little problems on the 
01/01/2005 mailinglists are now archived properly.

Second goal of the project will be to develop some (possibly perl-based) 
software which can be handled via eMail to get certain lost messages 
out of the archives attached to an eMail in a (zip||tar.gz||tar.bz2) to 
import them to your $mail_client. There is a mailing-list [3] and an 
empty CVS already. More info on this can be obtained by subscribing to 
the list.

Back to point one.

I am searching for complete editions of the years 2002, 2003 and 2004 of 
the following mailing-lists [4], mbox is prefeered (so no conversion is 
needed), but there is a conversion-script for maildir available as 
well. Some of the lists are complete already, but you know: Better 
check twice :-)

Another important point is to have the eMail-Headers complete, so we can 
check them to find something unique (important for SuSE-Lists) in them.

There are several options to give us your valued archives.

a) I download them [5].
b) You will get a FTP-Account and upload them (scp possible) [5].
c) Via eMail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] as attachment (Maximum Size: 30 MB per 
eMail) [5]

Nach anfÃnglichen Schwierigkeiten haben ich nun mein MBOX-Projekt [1] im

am 01.01.2005 wird nun fleissig gesammelt und archiviert.

Als nÃchstes starte ich nun mit bisher einem Mitstreiter die

die man via eMail bedienen kann, um sich aus den gesammelten Archiven 
einzelne Mails als Anhang (zip||tar.gz||tar.bz2) einer eMail zusenden 
lassen kann. HierfÃr existiert eine Mailingliste [3] und auch ein 
bisher leeres CVS. Mehr Infos dazu auf der Mailingliste.

Aber zurÃck zu Punkt Eins.

Unless gentoo uses the debian package (and AFAIK it does not) then ARTS
support in their TiMidity++ is terminantely broken.  It will be fixed in
2.13.3, since I sent the fixes upstream and they were accepted.

I'm having trouble with arts+timidity. 

If I use arts and timidity -Os it says that it cannot open the pcm device, but 
I assume that is the expected since arts is already using it.

If I use -Or, then timidity loads successfully but I cannot here any sound 
when I play a midi file with timidity in foreground or timidity in background 
and pmidi.

If I disable arts in the kde control center and use -Os then everything works.

Call for help: TiMidity++ aRts users

This is a call for help of all TiMidity++ users that use it with aRts mode
(KDE).

I have just uploaded a TiMidity++ release to unstable (2.13.2-3) that tries
to fix some troublesome aRts issues.  It will go into testing in 10 days, if
everyhing is alright with the dependencies.  

I am very strict about very high quality packaging, so I will not let
TiMidity++ with broken aRts support into the next stable, no matter what the
costs.  And I cannot test the TiMidity++ aRts output.

What that means is that if I don't get any sort of reports to work with (of
either failure or success) in 10 days, I will have to remove aRts support
from TiMidity++ for sarge with a high priority upload.  Should that happen,
I will re-enable aRts support in unstable after sarge releases, of course.

Thus, this call for help.  So, please, if you like aRts and would like to
have it supported natively in sarge's TiMidity, test the new TiMidity++
packages in sid and report back.

Note that due to aRts long standing bugs, aRts auto-detection has been
removed from the TiMidity++ 2.13.2-3 package, so you have to tell TiMidity
to use aRts manually (give it the -OR switch, or configure it accordingly
in /etc/timidity/timidity.cfg).

I am especially interested in these tests:
  1. Does it work at all if you tell it to use aRts (timidity -OR) ?
  2. Does it work if you stop the playback for some time (above your
 aRts automatic suspend timeout, tipically 60s) and start playing
 again?
  3. If you give it a few MIDI/MOD files, does it work when you tell it
 to skip to the next file while still playing the previous file?
 Even if you are using the GTK+ interface (timidity -ig -OR) ?
  4. Does it work in ALSA synt mode at all with aRts output
 (timidity -iA -OR, you will need to feed it MIDI files through the
  ALSA sequencer using rosegarden, or pmidi, or something like that)?

If some aRts enthusiasts would be so kind as to email me offering their help
in testing further TiMidity aRts fixes, I am sure I could bring TiMidity aRts
support up to par with the native ALSA support (hint: aRts is severely
crippled on TiMidity upstream if you compare it to native ALSA, and nobody
upstream is working on it at all).

I too am having this problem with a S3 Savage 4 card, running Sarge. I
only noticed it after upgrading to Sarge.

Since it only happened after the upgrade I haven't considered
possibility #1 much. Working with html for a living, I haven't been able
to find anything that would look like it would cause #3 (there are two
websites that cause this - sometimes - for me; one being
www.washtimes.com).

I have always thought this was probably #5, but can't reproduce it often
enough to file a bug report. It does, however, seem to happen the most
often when I'm using Galeon (it probably doesn't help that I almost
always have about 9 windows and 50+ webpages open, either).

I would definitely be interested in working with someone to help track
this down; it gets a little irritating at times, since this is on the
computer I use for work all day long.

Also, I'm using Ice for my window manager. I've seen some other quirks
that make me wonder if it's not a weird interaction between Ice and
Mozilla to cause this problem.

I just opened it in Firefox and Mozilla proper, no such region.  I have an
S3 Savage4.

I don't really like any of these theories, but still, the problem

First of all, let go of your Shift key, or unlock Caps. Writing in all
uppercase is considered yelling and quite rude by some, annoying because
it is hard to read by most.

Then, if your husband's computer is running Debian GNU/Linux, which is
what this mailing list is all about, then neither Corel Draw nor
WordPerfect will run. Try the OpenOffice suite of programs. Ask whoever
is admin of that machine to install it for you.

If you are running Windows, which I strongly suspect, sorry. No help to

   Bingo! Thank you very much. That's what i did and the nic i
inserted is working just fine. Now, if i could just get the nic part
of the nvidia onboard to work i would really be thrilled.

Caveat: IANAG. I'm not sure how tight the ties are between the kernel
and BIOS on things like onboard NICs, but the first place I'd start is
in BIOS, looking to disable the onboard one.

Second idea is whether you know the card is hardwired to an irq which
conflicts directly with something else? (I used to have this happen

Another thought would be to move the card physically to a different
slot.  There may be early confusion because of sharing the slot's
irq/id/whatever-it's-called-thingy with another, major subsystem such
as the video card or HD's.  (I remember reading something about this on
the AMD forum not too long ago.)

The Linux section on that forum seems relatively sharp about this sort
of stuff.  You might consider signing up ( www.amdmb.com and follow the
forum link) and posting the question there too.  They'll need much more
information about the MB, of course, as well as possibly the stock
kernel being used.  Others here likely could use that info as well. ;-)

Asking for help: installing debian on Athlon needing nvidia driver

Hello,

   I have just subscribed, so please let me know if there is an
archived answer/FAQ i should be reading. (I found some but not the
answer to my question.)

   I just acquired a 2 year old computer with Athlon 1800+
motherboard, including an nvidia based NIC. I tried to install
Debian using a CD that i normally use and, of course, it doesn't
recognize the nic because the nvidia drivers are not provided. I
then put in a 3C905 card to "temporarily" use to get to the network.
But when i use the CD, the boot hangs and never gets to the
installation. I remove the 3C905 and everything works again... of
course, without the network! Argh.

   Any clues as to how i can install Debian on this box, using the
onboard nic, would be greatly appreciated.

The above is an example of the "Nigerian Scam", also called 419 Letters,
or just plain 419.  Most 419 letters and emails originate from or are
traceable back to Nigeria. However, some originate from other nations,
mostly also West African nations such as Ghana, Togo, Liberia, Sierra
Leone, Ivory Coast ( Cote D'Ivoire ) etc.   

It's the current wrinkle of a decades-old scam that nets tens of
millions of dollars per year, and may be the third largest industry in
Nigeria.  The 419 Coalition believes that it is the elites from which
successive governments of Nigeria have been drawn who are the scammers.
Expect little cooperation from Nigerian authorities.

Information in this notice is compiled from various sources, links
below.  Keep reading for reporting information.


The Scam operates as follows: the target receives an unsolicited fax,
email, or letter concerning Nigeria containing either a money laundering
or other illegal proposal OR you may receive a Legal and Legitimate
business proposal by normal means.  Invariably, the proposition involves
resources which are somehow locked up:  oil or other invoice problems, a
bequest, money cleaning, or misallocated funds.

At some point, the victim is asked to pay up front an Advance Fee of
some sort.  If the victim pays the Fee, there are many "Complications"
which require still more advance payments until the victim either quits,
runs out of money, or both. 


To report the scam:

If you are a United States Citizen or Resident and have suffered NO
Financial Loss, write "No Financial Loss - For Your Database" on the
documents you received and Fax them to the US Secret Service Task
Force handling Scam matters at 202-406-6930.

I haven't called it, but my guess is this isn't a phone charge scam.
Rather, it's the Nigeria money scam all over again; you open an
account and they promise to put zillions in it, but first you have to
deposit some seed money for various reasons.  After that money
disappears you end up feeling like the idiot you were for beleiving
that someone who has access to stolen money wants _you_ to help invest
it / move it out of the country / whatever.

The scam is widespread and the scammers adapt their story to suit the
victim.

A few years ago the Catholic cathedral in Sioux Falls SD was informed
that some warlord had died and left millions of dollars to their
church.  However, there were legal issues and $25,000 was needed to
free up the money.  The church sent $25,000, anbd got nothing.
Needless to say, they felt pretty silly after it was reported in the
local paper ...

They probably added your e-mail address to one of those "250,000,000
e-mail addrresses" CDs. I hope your procmail skills are up to date,

unrest in Nigeria and the plot of smuggling funds into the United
States, but the recipient failed to respond.

What are you all's opinion of this letter? Did anyone else respond to
the others? Is anyone going to help this person by visiting that part
of the world? Is there anyone on this list living in Abidjan?

I do wonder if this letter is a form of propaganda against the old
rulers of these nations - the military elite that may have possessed,
or may have allegedly possessed, large funds of money. It seems that
if someone really has millions of dollars they wouldn't need to be
spamming a debian user group looking for help.

I'd very strongly recommend you read the following excellent essay by
Simon Tatham, "How to Report Bugs Effectively"

Please note that you are the person in the best position to know what
you're trying to do, what you've done, how the system's responded, and
generally how it's configured.  It's very helpful if you can post:

While others can offer suggestions, guidance, and experience, we cannot
