I'm jumping late into this thread, so excuse me if I am off-beam,
but is it that you want to take a screendump of the console
(/dev/tty*)? If so:

setterm -dump -file ~/output.dump && \
col -b < ~/output.dump ~/screen.capture

Might help, although you'll find:

http://www.p12n.org/hacks/screendump

helpful.

I use KSnapshot which allows for window, screen or region based snapshots with
a user defined delay. Its great if you run kde or a lot of kde based apps
but probably has to much overhead if you don't.

Thank you Alan Connor for your most excellent help! My original post did not
appear in the archives for several days, so I *assumed* it didn't post at
all. Today, I just ran across a googled archive where my console keyword was
mentioned and I noticed replies and began reading/testing. Your information
worked perfectly!

I now can get text copies of my console which is better than nothing :) I
don't use fb locally since it breaks my consoles (silly nvidia driver thing).

Thanks all for the replies. Sorry about the sig flame thing--whatever :) !

1) PGP signatures will not protect information from being read. PGP
signatures only verify who sent what.[1]

2) Unless you are running a seriously broken email client[2], PGP signing
of email adds only a few lines to an email.

3) Although you might not care who I am, I can imagine several possible
scenarios where it would be very beneficial[3] to be able to show that I am
in the habit of signing all of my outgoing email.

Who died and made you list administrator?

Whether or not you give a `rip' is immaterial to the thousands of list
subscribers who've participated on this list long before you knew it
existed, and will doubtless continue participating long after you are
gone.

Ever since you popped up on this list, you have proven bossy,

You are right there. Are you equally bothered if the signature ends up
in an attachment?

I can't help thinking of something Phil Zimmermann mentioned in some
text I read (I think he was the author). Some governments re trying to
ban electronic encryption that they don't have a back door to so he
encouraged everyone to use it, simply due to the practical difficulties
with prohibiting something that everyone is doing. One might see signing
emails as taking a stand for strong, cheap electronic encryption
available to the masses.

I think gimp can capture the screen, as well as quite a few other
utilities, I imagine. This would be a graphic image.

If the program is operating in text mode, you might be able to capture
the output or input in a regular DOS file using pipes (that is, pipes
with dos).

Try 'cat /dev/vcsa0 > file' or 'cat /dev/vcs0 > file' (with 0 being the
number of the console you use). The files will require some post
processing (they contain escape codes,...)

If that doesn't work, I'm pretty sure there must be a way to capture the

I would like to take a few snapshots of a console where I have dosemu running
and old DOS application. Does anyone know of a utility that can grab that
screen from another console?

TIA, wishing you well.
