My machine at work dual boots Debian and Redhat. I use Debian for
most of my work, which is writing C code for Solaris, thus my PC is
basically a glorified X-terminal (not really, because all the apps I
use - Emacs, Netscape, xterms - run locally, I just ssh to the Sun
boxes). I confess that I only installed RedHat on a small partition to
get the sound card configuration from 'sndconfig' (that was before it
entered woody). I'm thinking about ditching it, but on second thought
I guess I would like to keep my RPM skills up to date.
I gave up using my PC at home since I married.

Oh yeah, I've been MS-free for one and a half year now.

cheers,

And it teaches people to use a good virus scanner with very recent

that te virus W32/Navidad.32768.Worm was attached to the message and

I occasionally boot Win95 to play games (the only one recently has been
Shogun: Total War), but it's been... a couple months since the last time I
did that, and I recently bought a PlayStation (1, not 2), which should allow
me to get non-Linux gaming fixes without killing my uptime. (I've actually
found myself in stores looking at Windows games and consciously thinking, It
looks like a good game, but it's not anything worth rebooting for. Kinda
scary the first time that happens...) Everything else is on Linux.

Work:

I have the good fortune to have two PCs on my desk, one running Linux and one
running NT. I write server-side software for Windows and *nix. I do all my
coding on the Linux box (I'll take multiple vi sessions over Visual Studio
(or any other IDE I've seen) any day), then turn around and build the code on
the NT box (using make in CygWin's bash port, so it's a pretty unixy NT).
I also use the NT box for network browsing (as in 'NT Explorer'/ 'Network
Neighborhood', not www), although I suppose I could get around to trying
out tksmb and do that from Linux also...

Hmm yeah. I could try VMware, have done in the past. But, I have a machine
with 64mb ram only, Tie that up with Vmware and flash 5, and things
sloow dramatically. Before you say upgrade, think of the cost here,
We're technologically disadvantaged in AU hehe. Plus, for some strange
reason, even following the docs, I could never get more than 16 colours out
of vmware. It's just basically easier to dual boot, and put up with it. I'm
not concerned about uptimes here, I don't need to be, I don't have a machine
that has to be connected to the net 24/7, I do have one that does, but it's
a different machine, running Debian, I only use Debian on my box for what I
said in my previous email. It's a case of use what's suitable and what's in
the budget, not what's l33t and anti-Microsoft.

My last word.

Well, due to limited resources I still dual-boot this machine, though I
only go to M$ for games, DVD movies and the odd occasion where I want to
look at a web site that insists on using java/shockwave/whatever that
causes netscape to lose it. As soon as I get it together enough for 3
maybe more machines, I'll have a Linux firewall, Linux
workstation/server and a Windows box for those awkward moments.
