ppp not working after upgrade to testing(solved)
Hi, Re my earlier post when I said I could not connect to the internet even though a PPP session had started, I have managed to solve the problem. (Of my own making I might add) so I will share this for future Users. Whilst doing a dist-upgrade you are asked a question regarding what network devices you have. The first time I answered this I correctly entered ppp only, but this is not the default. the script seemed to hang after this so on re-attempting I foolishly accepted the defaults. Somewhere in doing this, I managed to configure a slip device (sl0) which had taken an IP address from who knows where. After much reading about networks, I tried the 'ifconfig' command. 2 devices were listed. the loopback device, correct I believe, and the sl0 device. I took this out with 'ifconfig sl0 down' and hey presto, my ppp connection works again. I would also like to thank all those who responded to my initial email with help and advice, cheers guys! -- Best Regards Wayne.

upgrade to testing now ppp not working
Hi, Has anyone else had a problem with ppp dial up after upgrading to testing? Everything was working fine, now when I use 'PON', the system dialls and connects fine but then there is no more activity (send or receive). I have used pppconfig to make sure the settings haven't changed. I was using static DNS with Worldonline. The 2 DNS server address's are in the file /etc/resolv.conf and also in /etc/ppp/resolv.conf for good measure :) I also tried changing to dynamic DNS but this did not work too. I tried pinging the dns servers but I get no response and no send or receive activity. I tried 'plog' and no file exists. I tried /var/log/ppp-connect-errors and it was empty I looked in the archives and someone mentioned the wrong default gateway but I couldnt find anymore detail. I am running out of ideas any help please guys ? Regards Wayne.

PPP not working after reinstall
Hi all, I'm sending this e-mail using Windowze because my Linux box was reinstalled (the primary HD was broken) and PPP isnt working. I used pppconfig to configure. I estabilish the connection with pon but the connection's velocity doesnt pass above 0 bytes, even pinging or ftping. What can be wrong? Thanks for any help. Re: ppp not working
I think what's being overlooked in all of this is that the orignal problem was that pppd was not found. pppd is the daemon. As root, issue the command: updatedb then enter : locate pppd and see what comes up. "Keith G. Try 'insmod ppp'. Does that make it work? This should, indeed, be done automatically. /etc/init.d/modutils should have code to do 'depmod -a' and 'modprobe', which should do all you need. i am new to debian but have managed to get a working set-up using 2.1. however, i am unable to connect to the net. when i try to invoke ppp, i get a message saying that there is no pppd module. what do i do? at what stage in the install is the ppp module loaded? i thought that this was an integral part of the system and did not need to be loaded separately. any help would be appreciated. i am using the fv2wm X interface. sam

Question: I have slink installed, and after upgrading my kernel from 2.0.36 to 2.2.1, my ppp says it is not configured in the kernel or as a module. I don't know a whole lot about ppp and just use pppconfig to setup my dialup. When booting, it doesn't say "ppp line discipline" or whatever it says anymore either. Hi, I am trying to make PPP work. I've read PPP-howto and configured everything according to it. But I still can't connect to my university server.
