I've been holding back on ordering until they get ogg support and I
get money myself...

Hi Paul,

It isn't a car stereo, but maybe the Neuros is what you want. It is a
portable MP3 player with build-in FM and optional 20GB HDD. It sports an
extra feature that enables it to send its output to a selectable FM
frequency (thus optionally to your car radio). What's even better this
company has sought and supported active participation from the open
source community, resulting among others in positron (an OSS syncing
tool for the neuros). They are also collaborating with Xiph.org to get
full ogg support (for starters). I think they recently anounced that
they had it working with the latest firmware upgrade. Reviews (found
with Google of course) are quite positive too.

The only reason why I haven't bought it myself yet is that they told me
they would have it in Europe by August. Otherwise I would already have
ordered it from their site.

Some places you might want to visit:
www.neurosaudio.com
open.neurosaudio.com
www.xiph.org/positron

I've just got a portable MP3 player for my wife, is a Diva MP3 Player
from from http://mydivaplayer.com/html/diva.html
They range from 32mb -256mb and can also use flash cards, which actually
combine with the internal memory (unlike some of them who take over, i.e
if you had a 256mb version and bought another 256mb flash card, you
would get 500mb, where as some will only use 256 MB)

Its recognised by any distro running at least a 2.4.x kernel with usb
mass storage support, so just add usb-storage to /etc/modules and plug
it in, you then access it as:

/dev/sda1 /usb-media vfat rw,noauto,user 0 0

Reading and writing works great and you can get an in car kit from (over
here is the uk Argo for around £10) that plugs into the output of the
player and the cassette recorder in the car.

Hope that helps

Mark

One device I'd love to see is a car stereo that supports oggs and uses a
standard hard drive for storage. Would make upgrading a snap.

I have one that plays mp3's off of a CD-R\CD-RW, it was $120AUD but it
was this really dodgey no name brand called ESC, my suggestion is you
get something simmilar because for me a 650mb cd gives me about 150
songs, and should you get bored you could always pack more then one mp3
cd :P

The rioutils program supports enough of the Rio 800 to upload,
list, and delete mp3's. I thought it was a Debian package, but on
closer inspection, it looks like I compiled it from source. I'm
using rioutil-1.2a4.

Here's my cheat sheet for communicating with it:

sudo modprobe usbdevfs
sudo mount usbdevfs
sudo modprobe usb-uhci

I like the Rio; I wouldn't go less than 64Mb of memory, as that
gives me about an hour's worth of music to choose from -- less,
and I'd be wanting to rotate the music more. If you're looking at
3+ hours of commuting, you may not be looking at "inexpensive" mp3
players any more. From what I've seen, there are either the
walkman-type small players, with up to about 2 hours of memory
using memory cards, and then you get into the 20Gb+ hard-drive
backed players -- those may be more appropriate for you, but are
mor expensive than the smaller players.

The Rio's main problem is the battery; I use it for about half an
hour each day (while working out), and I can only reliably get
about a week out of it before needing to recharge --> approx 4-5
hours of use. It claims to have about 10 hours of use per battery
charge. I have a feeling it "leaks" juice even while off. I go
through the recalibration every once in a while, which seems to
help a bit.

Portable MP3/Ogg player supported by Debian?

2003-07-18 Thread Carl Fink
Monday I start a job that will, at least for the short term, involve
spending three or more hours a day commuting. I suspect that NPR will begin
to pall after a while.

I'm thinking about getting a portable MP3 player so I can listen to
recorded/downloaded content in my car. I have never used one, and I'd love
to get some advice on an inexpensive one (I don't care about audio quality)
that is supported by a Debian package. Searching the Packages archive finds
lots of tools to *make* MP3's, but nothing about supporting portable
players other than the Diamond Rio. Hmm ... on second look, the Samsung
YEPP seems to be supported, if un-euphonious.

OGG support would be a plus, but isn't critical.

Thanks.
