quake 2 mouse problem
Hi List, I just found out about apt-get install quake2 :) Everything is fine apart from my mouse. It works only horizontally, but far too quickly, and doesn't seem to respond to the speed setting in the game settings. I'm using KDE and a Xinerama setup (I think Xinerama could be the problem here). Does anyone have any tips? I've done a google and saw some things about setting up the mouse correctly in vgalib, which I have done but this didn't change anything. Any help would be appreciated. Quake 2 can't fall back to software refresh
Hi, I'm trying to run Quake 2 in Debian 2.4.5. I installed it and a new version of libc5 to satisfy its need for libm.so.5 and such other libs. I moved quake2.conf to /etc. I put the files in /usr/local/games/quake2 and I put a copy of all the libs in /lib, /usr/lib, and /usr/local/lib, but it keeps saying it can't load ref_softx.so even though it's in ALL those places. I had it working a while ago on Debian, and now it won't run. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? Thanks, Deven Gallo
Quake 2 Video Failure
Whenever I try to initialize Quake 2, it says it can't find ref_softx.so. It's right there in the directory with the binary. I copied all the libraries to /lib and /usr/lib and even usr/local/lib, but it won't work. I copied quake2.conf to etc/ and made a symlink to pak0.pak from my DOS partition (to save space on my small 8gb drive.) Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? I got this to work before .. -- Deven Gallo

quake 2 server probs
Hi, I've been having problems connecting to your various (but not all) quake 2 servers, and was wondering if anyone had any ideas. Details are: When I try to connect a server which fails I get the following stuff on the console: ** Connecting to 203.1.91.5:27910... 203.1.91.5:27910: challenge 203.1.91.5:27910: client_connect The Pits --- sound initialization --- sound sampling rate: 11025 --- Loading ref_softx.so --- Cmd_AddCommand: +mlook already defined Cmd_AddCommand: -mlook already defined Cmd_AddCommand: force_centerview already defined Couldn't write config.cfg. recursive shutdown Error: VID: Could not open display [] * It's not a permission problem, since the same error occurs even if I run quake2 as root. I don't think it's an issue with my firewall, because previously a friends machine which was masqed behind mine was able to connect and play. Multiplayer stuff works fine across my local network, so that side of things is working. I'm running quake 2 version 3.20, which I assume is the correct one, though I noticed that you only had version 3.19a for download at chariot. I've only managed to find one server that works (quake2.eisa.net.au) both pure DM and lithium mod servers exhibit the problem. Any ideas as to what could be wrong? cheers, David Today people in droves hurry up past Heumoz to Villars on the road to the ski hills, so they can rush down them as fast as possible, so they can hurry up again in order to rush down again. Quake 2 and glx/mga
Has anyone got Quake 2 to work with recent glx/mga CVS? Q3:A demo works well (and very quickly) on my G400, but Quake 2 doesn't even run. Running /usr/games/quake2 +set vid_ref glx +set gl_driver libGL.so loads Quake 2, and just before switching to ref_soft mode, it complains that it can't load libGL.so (which is in /usr/X11R6/lib). Switching back to VC7 (X), the X server is kind of screwed - it doesn't register mouseclicks in any window other than the one the pointer was on when I ran Quake 2 - and it acts as if the left button is held down - moving the pointer around the aforementioned window drags a selection (if it's an Eterm or Netscape, for example). Is this a bug in the quake2[-bin] package or glx, or is it possibly my configuration? Has anyone else suffered the same problems? -- alisdair mcdiarmid[EMAIL PROTECTED] [the day is done but i'm having fun i think i'm dumb maybe just happy]

Quake 2
I had a go at running Quake 2 this weekend, with limited success I spent ages getting all the libc5 stuff, (glide 2.53, Mesa 3.0 quake2) and I could only run softx in an x window. yeuch. However I noticed that there was also a glibc version of quake2, so after attempting to recompile mesa using glibc I had glx in an X window (unfortunately at about 1frame every 30 seconds) and I can run quake2 in a console at 300x200.

Re: Quake 2 ref_soft problems
Upgrade your svgalib to the slink version, or compile your own package. --j The slink version is the same package as the hamm version. I suppose I'll get the source and compile, but I wish there was some easier way...it doesn't make much sense that it's not working. I had the exactly same problem, softx was working, but ref_soft or ref_gl didn't. The reason was because of something with mouse or keyboard handling, with X it was done through X, and soft through svgalib. Also make sure that you have the lastest Q2 (3.15a at the moment, 3.17 any day now.) Well, I got the svgalib source and compiled it, and now quake2 works fine. I don't understand it, but it works.
