You're probably running into the Debian kernel Realtek firmware blob issue.
Google it or search the archives for the past month. This has been
discussed here at length recently.

Search your dmesg output for something like:

eth0: unable to apply firmware patch

If you see that you're a victim of the firmware blob issue. Basically,
Debian feels the Realtek firmware isn't free so does not distribute it
with Debian kernels/drivers, which bricks the Realtek LAN chips.

I've said for years that Realtek ethernet chips are junk and to stay away
from them. This latest FW blob fiasco is but one more reason added to the
long list. If your time is worth more than ~$30 USD, buy an Intel PCI/PCIe
NIC and be done with it. You'll pull much hair out trying to get an RTL
chip working with a recent Debian kernel.

1. What card is it exactly?
2. What do you mean by 'the network card crashed'?
3. A google search like '$card linux' will likely show you if the card
has drivers and works well with linux.

http://kmuto.jp/debian/hcl/ is also a good place to search for

Hi,

1. My motherboard is an MSI P965 Neo F and, as I didn't feel like
opening my computer case and looking to find the exact model of the
network adapter, I googled a bit and found the following here:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130052

and the RTL8110SC LAN card offers unparalleled 10/100/1000 Mbps
Ethernet connectivity.

So I'm guessing that's my network card.

2. I mean that I am unable to even view my router interface from both
my Linux and Windows partition and when I ping its default gateway,
I get 100% packet transfer failure. However, when I connect with the
same Ethernet cable from my laptop, everything works fine. So there's
no trouble from either the ISP or the router. (my ISP actually
confirmed that they're not seeing any trouble with my connection from
their end).

3. Agreed.

I was just phoned by a friend who advised me to look for updated
firmware/drivers for my network adapter before I go ahead and purchase
a new one. Sounds like a wise plan, I'll try it and update this.

Thanks

Rather then guessing or opening up the computer you could use the tools
provided by your Linux installation.

Like
lspci -v |grep -i ethernet

You cannot go wrong with an Intel NIC, regardless of OS:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833106123
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833106033

It's one of few cards you'll never have to worry about compatibility
headaches, especially in Linux. They just work, and they work well. Unlike
the Realteks and Marvells of the world, you can actually get close to GigE
wire speed with an Intel Pro 1000 card.
