Ehm what? I use the 2.4.27 and my AsusTek A7V600-X
has a VIA SATA controler and it works perfectly...

Using a WD360 Raptor plus WD1500 Raptor

I have tried my eigth SATA 750 GByte drives on over 20 different
Mainboards but it seems, they do not doek on those controlers.

Even my 3Ware 3w9500 four channel had problems which went solved
after upgrading the Firmware.

Now, the 3Ware controlers (3w9xxx) should handel the 1 TByte
drives too which I have ordered for 2 or 3 weeks.

That problem is still there. It seems to depend on the kernel version
used and the revision of the SATA chipset. I have a machine at home with
a VIA SATA controller about two years old - Etch and other distros find
it without any trouble. We have more recent Pentium machines at work
also with a VIA chip, newer revision - Etch does not recognize it,
neither do Ubuntu, Knoppix, Centos 4. Fedora 6 and SuSE work.
I guess there is no general solution, just trial and error.

Best regards,
Thomas

As far as I know SATA support wasn't included in the Kernel until
after Sarge became stable, so it was never included in Sarge's
repositories.

If you're trying to install Debian on a SATA disk your best bet is
Etch, installing Sarge would be way too much trouble (You'd probably
have to do a lot of work), and in a few months it will become old
stable anyway (With Etch being the new stable).

Try the upcoming stable release Debian "etch" 4.0, aka 'testing' for
now. There are a few remaining bugs (delaying release as 'stable'), but
it contains more recent hardware support and features security support
as well.

You could also try a backported kernel with debian sarge 3.1.
