It seems SSDT is a BIOS thing dealing with power management... Why

SSDT is a "suplementary" ACPI methods table. As long as everything works
fine, your laptop might just have a DSDT (the "primary" ACPI methods table)
and no SSDTs.

It is still weird, though. Try to update the BIOS on that laptop to the
latest released by the manufacturer.

Ethan,

We (the list) like "Good Questions (TM)". Your first question did not qualify,
and with the additional information that you provided, it still does not
qualify as a Good Question.

What we know:
you got an error
it is a laptop
you bought it sight unseen
it had Windws XP on it
you got the error with XP
you installed debian on it
you got the same error with Debian

Just some of the things that we (the list)don't know, and we need to know to
help you solve this problem:
how old is it
how much memory does it have
what is the brand
what processor does it have
what disk drive does it have and what is its capacity
what bios does it have
is the bios up to date or is there a newer version abailable

Given what little information you have provided we think that:
There is perhaps a bios problem
the problem is not related to debian or XP since it occurs when you boot
either one.

It was suggested that you:
Go into the bios and reset it to factory default. If that fixes the problem,
you are all set. If not, the computer may have a very limited life left. Did
you reset the bios? (You did not say if you tried that)
Make sure that the computer has the latest verison of the bios installed. Did
you check the version of the bios? What is the result of updating the bios?

I'm able and willing to read HTML, even if IMO HTML for emails is
obsolet. HTML for emails was a valid experiment, to test if comfortable
text formatting could be provided. The experiment failed, HTML for
emails comes with more drawbacks, than advantages. We still have enough
issues without HTML and shouldn't add extra-issues. The formatting of
this thread even for HTML was über-disgusting.

Updating the BIOS depends on the computer. Many BIOS can now update
directly from a USB stick (usually required to be formatted as FAT16 or
FAT32 and containing the BIOS file) but older ones need to run a DOS
program from a machine booted into a special (DOS) mode.

If your machine can boot from a floppy (remember those?), that's easy
but if it can't it's a little trickier. There's no end of ways to format
a bootable DOS floppy disk and copy the installer and BIOS to them.

If you have a machine without a floppy drive, you need to create a boot
disk (CD or USB stick) that boots to a DOS command prompt and that
contains the updated BIOS and the BIOS installer. Where it gets tricky
is that MS-DOS doesn't recognize either device without drivers, and may
not recognize a USB stick at all. Do some research on FreeDOS.

Another option is to boot into Windows. Some manufactures now provide a
Windows program to update the BIOS. However, if you don't have Windows
installed, and why would you just to update the BIOS, then you are again
out of luck.

Hi Ethan :)

I don't use Icedove, but there for sure are 2 important options.

1. It must be possible that you switch to plain text for mails by
   default.
2. It's very likely that there is an option to automatically reply to
   the mailing list only.

For the future it's important that you take care about this, but at the
moment don't worry about it, lets first try to find out what's wrong
with your laptop.

I don't think that you need a new BIOS version, a new version might have
less bugs, but even a buggy version should enable to at least run
Windows on that machine.

Install a new BIOS, because it might be broken. Perhaps the memory for
the BIOS is broken.

On my machine I experienced very strange errors, when the battery was
weak, even when there were no messages about an empty battery. I'm not
thinking about the rechargeable battery of your laptop, but about a
CR2032, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CR2032_battery .

Those batteries are that inexpensive, that in a case of doubt, it should
be replaced. I know it's not very nice regarding to environmentalism,
but the battery could cause issues. You don't need to throw away the old
battery, if it shouldn't be weak, but anyway, test what happens, if you
replace the battery.

Ralf

passedthe MD5SUM or other test?

I bought this laptop from eBay as a used unit. It had Windows XP
loaded
when received, and displayed the same problem.. I installed the
Debian

Ethan,

We (the list) like "Good Questions (TM)". Your first question did
not qualify,
and with the additional information that you provided, it still does
not

qualify as a Good Question.

What we know:
you got an error
it is a laptop
you bought it sight unseen
it had Windows XP on it
you got the error with XP
you installed Debian on it
you got the same error with Debian

Just some of the things that we (the list)don't know, and we need to
know to

help you solve this problem:
how old is it >>2007
how much memory does it have >>2G
what is the brand >> Dell Latitude D630
what processor does it have >> Intel Duo Core 2.2G
what disk drive does it have and what is its capacity >> 160G
what bios does it have Dell A13
is the bios up to date or is there a newer version available >>
Latest A17.

Given what little information you have provided we think that:
There is perhaps a bios problem
the problem is not related to Debian or XP since it occurs when you
boot

either one.

It was suggested that you:
Go into the bios and reset it to factory default. >> DONE

If that fixes the problem, >> It didn't

you are all set.

If not, the computer may have a very limited life left. OUCH!

Did

you reset the bios? >> Yes (You did not say if you tried that)
Make sure that the computer has the latest version of the bios
installed. Did

you check the version of the bios? >> Y

What is the result of updating the bios? >> It is not obvious to me
how to do it. All the documentation refers to a Windows/DOS system.
Would someone please walk me thru it.

Thanks for your help and constructive criticism.

Ethan

Updating the BIOS depends on the computer. Many BIOS can now update
directly from a USB stick (usually required to be formatted as FAT16
or FAT32 and containing the BIOS file) but older ones need to run a
DOS program from a machine booted into a special (DOS) mode.

If your machine can boot from a floppy (remember those?), that's easy
but if it can't it's a little trickier. There's no end of ways to
format a bootable DOS floppy disk and copy the installer and BIOS to
them.

If you have a machine without a floppy drive, you need to create a
boot disk (CD or USB stick) that boots to a DOS command prompt and
that contains the updated BIOS and the BIOS installer. Where it gets
tricky is that MS-DOS doesn't recognize either device without drivers,
and may not recognize a USB stick at all. Do some research on FreeDOS.

Another option is to boot into Windows. Some manufactures now provide
a Windows program to update the BIOS. However, if you don't have
Windows installed, and why would you just to update the BIOS, then you
are again out of luck.

Gary -

Thanks.

I tried to remove the HTML from this message, but Icedove will not let
me do it. The preference for the user list is plain text...so I do not
know. My apologies to you and the list.

Thanks for the above. Looking at the documentation, I think if I plug
in a USB stick and then start the computer, go into the bios and set the
boot to the USB stick, it should work.

Some practical questions:

USB stick: Size ?GB
 Format [FAT16/FAT32]??
 Boot into [DOS]?

Ethan

PS Please define "Good Questions (TM)" I'm new at this, and do not want
to step on anyone's toes.

Ok, now we know the above and that the new battery also doesn't solve the
issue.

Now you should update the BIOS.
USB sticks usually are formatted with fat32 by default and that should be
ok for the BIOS.

Latest BIOS version at
http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/uk/en/ukdhs1/Product/latitude-d630 is

A18.

-rw-r--r-- 1 spinymouse11.2 users 1.2M 2013-03-17 21:43 D630_A18.exe

The smallest USB stick should be ok regarding to the file size, but I
suspect you need to build a DOS CD or something similar to run the exe. I
can't help you with this, perhaps somebody else does know how to continue.

I wonder if it would be possible to run the exe from a Linux live media,
assumed there should be one providing wine.

Booting from the USB stick only works if you can run the BIOS installer

You need a DOS boot image you can boot from a USB stick, or (if your laptop
has a CD drive, from a CD).

http://derek.chezmarcotte.ca/?p=188

Please be careful when you write that image to the USB stick, make sure to
not get the /dev/sdX device name wrong, or you can cause data loss.

After the image has been written to the USB stick, you can access it by
removing the USB stick, and inserting it again. Copy the .EXE file into the
USB stick, boot it, and run the .EXE command.

Good advice! It can't harm to backup everything on the drives of the
machine, you'll use to dd data to the USB stick, before you'll do it. We
are humans and this is a mistake that easily could happen, even if you
should be careful.

First off, the boot image is a .bz2 file. That is a bzip2 compressed
file. You need to unzip it to make it into an image file.

From reading the comments on the page for the USB download, it appears
that you should dd the image to /dev/sdf. Apparently it contains the MBR
and a partition table. Next you can mount the USB key partition 1
(/dev/sdf1) somewhere and copy the bios update program and the updated
bios file to it. Finally, reboot to the USB key and run the bios update
program.

Disk /dev/sdf doesn't contain a valid partition table

Ethan

First off, the boot image is a .bz2 file. That is a bzip2
compressed file. You need to unzip it to make it into an image
  file.

From reading the comments on the page for the USB download, it
appears that you should dd the image to /dev/sdf. Apparently it
contains the MBR and a partition table. Next you can mount the USB
key partition 1 (/dev/sdf1) somewhere and copy the bios update
program and the updated bios file to it. Finally, reboot to the
USB key and run the bios update program.

No, I guess Ethan does it still "unknowingly" and I said, that he needs
not to care too much about it right now, so I share of the blame
regarding to the Cc'ing.

HTML is another issue, Ethan first didn't understand how to write plain
text, but until he was aware how to disable HTML, continuing should have
stopped, but even here I suspect a lack of knowledge. Perhaps Ethan
replied to HTML and then the MUA automatically switched from plain text
to HTML.

I _was_ pissed off, but calmed down. If Ethan writes around 10 mails in
HTML or by Cc'ing it's ok. If it should be more than 10 additional
mails, I'll filter mails from Ethan by my MUA.

Spamming is something different. Spamming is done with a bad intension,
Ethan seems to be unexperienced with computers or at least with MUAs.

So for me it's ok, no hard feelings. But I expect that Ethan and others
understand that I was a little bit annoyed.

Unexperienced people are allowed to continue for a while and
intellectually disabled users should be allowed to do it always.

MUA is for Mail User Agent, in other words it's your mail client, aka

You previous problem was that /dev/sdf is a file representing a device.
You need to mount the device in order to see what files it contains. You
also need to do this to copy the files to it.

try:
 mount -t vfat /dev/sdf1 /media/usbstick
 cp /media/usbstick
 cp /media/usbstick

Note that /media/usbstick needs to exist. Also you should be root to do
this (try su or sudo bash).

2013-04-03 Thread Ethan Rosenberg, PhD

Dear List -

Back from vacation.

HEADACHES!!

I formatted the usb stick as FAT16 loaded the DOS OS and the Bios update.

The laptop would not boot from the stick. Set the boot parameters to
boot from the usb stick. Computer freezes. Noticed that the laptop
recognizes the usb stick at FAT32.

Formatted the usb stick and loaded the DOS OS.

fdisk -l

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdb1 * 32 63487 31728e W95 FAT16 (LBA)

The directory /media/usbstick exists.

Can not create the directory for the bios.

rosenberg:/# mount /dev/sdb1 /media/usbstick
mount: you must specify the filesystem type
rosenberg:/# mount -t e /dev/sdb1 /media/usbstick
mount: unknown filesystem type 'e'
rosenberg:/# mount -t vfat /dev/sdb1 /media/usbstick
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb1,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
   dmesg | tail or so

If you need more information, please tell me.

I'm confused about why the usb stick isn't mounted automatically. Most
are. However the partition type and the file system are two different
things.

I'm not sure that the file system is actually correct. Did you format it
using mkdosfs -F 16 /dev/sdb1 or did you use some other command?

Once is it correctly formatted, you should have no trouble mounting it.

I'm confused about why the usb stick isn't mounted automatically. Most
are. However the partition type and the file system are two different
things.

I'm not sure that the file system is actually correct. Did you format
it using mkdosfs -F 16 /dev/sdb1 or did you use some other command?

Once is it correctly formatted, you should have no trouble mounting it.

At this point I'm at a loss. It's not a Linux problem but something
related to your laptop. Have you tried the manufacturer's technical support?

Ethan
First off, the boot image is a .bz2 file. That is a bzip2 compressed
file. You need to unzip it to make it into an image file.

Finally, reboot to the USB
key and run the bios update program.

Where is my error?

Ethan

If I am understanding what you are trying to do then...

If the usbstick is /dev/sdf then the output file of the dd command
should be /dev/sdf (the unmounted device) NOT
/media/usbstick/FreeDOS-1.1-USB-Boot.img (a file in the filesystem on
the mounted device). The image IS a filesystem, which should be written
to the device not to a file IN a filesystem ON the device

Hi Ethan,

I'm a little bit pissed off, since I got mails in my private and in my
Debian folders and I'm not willing to puzzle the strange formatted HTML
mails. However, as already pointed out, but anyway with mistakes
regarding to input and output, ...

- compressed files first need to be extracted
- but then it's correct, that the input file is has got a path
- it might be that you have overwritten the MBR of your USB stick, if
so, the partition table now is destroyed and you first might need to
format it before you can continue ...

... I don't know, since I don't know how to make a bootable DOS stick

Sure, I can do your homework.

http://lmgtfy.com/?q=free+dos+usb+stick+linux

then you will find among other hints, this one

http://tuxtweaks.com/2009/09/create-a-bootable-freedos-usb-drive-on-linux-with-unetbootin/

available by Debian, see

http://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=unetbootin

I don't know if the howto is good, I don't know if it's working, because
I have to do my own homework. I'm willing to help you with your homework
if ...

- you stop sending me privately
- you stop continuing to send odd formatted HTML mails
- I even reply to HTML mails if they are sane formatted

Regards,
Ralf

Overwriting the MBR is the whole point of getting a bootable USB device
when dd'ing or cat'ing an isohybrid to a USB stick. Any formatting which
is done beforehand will be completely undone by the writing process.

You have the opportunity to learn how to from posts in this thread. :)

UNetbootin might be a fine progam but using it to write an isohybrid to
a USB device is using yesterday's technology.

I set the parameters for this list to text only.

When part of the email is HTML, Icedove defaults to HTML.

You're almost there, your message is still coming across as html,
"preformat" simply makes html that looks like plaintext. This is
useful when you want to send program code in html, but it doesn't help
the plaintext issue.

Here's an article on how to setup plaintext with thunderbird, and
Icedove should be the same:

While Evolution became a PITA, it does provide one useful feature.

I can format plain text as "normal" and as "preformatted"

Normal:
[rocketmouse@archlinux Desktop]$ rm 123456789\ 123456789\ 123456789\
123456789\ 123456789\ 123456789\ 123456789

Preformatted:
[rocketmouse@archlinux Desktop]$ rm 123456789\ 123456789\ 123456789\ 123456789\
123456789\ 123456789\ 123456789

At least Evolution doesn't wrap the preformatted line, but does wrap the
normal formatted line. Does it show up like that in your MUA too?
