As long as 5.5.1 works, I'll be fine. I would guess 5.5.1->5.5.3 is free for registered users. Version 5.5.1 might be fine but 5.5.3 installs on Etch without messing with patches. > Oh, BTW, why not go and put the latest Windows on your machine... then > you won't have to go through all that missing drivers updates hassle. It depends on many things, seems that VMware Workstation is still at version 5.5.1 for the download and purchase... or perhaps are you talking about the VMware 6 Beta? In any case, VMware 6 (BETA) has some features... but, that is another discussion. I don't believe I'll get to buy the new version until I get a round of new machines for myself. As long as 5.5.1 works, I'll be fine. Oh, BTW, why not go and put the latest Windows on your machine... then you won't have to go through all that missing drivers updates hassle. -- Novell's Directory Services is a competitive product to Microsoft's Active Directory in much the same way that the Saturn V is a competitive product to those dinky little model rockets that kids light off down at the playfield. -- Thane Walkup signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part

Download and extract the VMware-workstation-5.5.1-19175 non-RPM version. 2. Once extracted, run the script from the "vmware-distrib" directory called "vmware-install.pl", take the defaults. Do not auto-run "vmware-config.pl". If you do, CTRL-C out of it to exit it completely. 3. Make sure you have the linux-headers package installed for you current linux-image. IOW, if you have linux-image-2.6.18-4-k7 as you current kernel, you will need linux-headers-2.6.18-4-k7 (which will pull in linux-headers-2.6.18-4 as it depends on it). Another helpful package is "kernel-package". That package makes sure you have everything you need to build kernel modules. 4. Download and extract the latest "vmware-any-any-update" from http://ftp.cvut.cz/vmware/ 5. As of this e-mail, vmware-any-any-update108 is current. From the "vmware-any-any-update108" directory execute (run) the "runme.pl". It should find you "installation of 5.5.1" and will patch it. It should also ask "run vmware-config.pl" answer yes. Take the defaults. 6. If running GNOME, use ALT-F2 and type in "vmware" and press enter. You are running vmware. -- Novell's Directory Services is a competitive product to Microsoft's Active Directory in much the same way that the Saturn V is a competitive product to those dinky little model rockets that kids light off down at the playfield. -- Thane Walkup signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part
Re: VMware Workstation Module Compilation (etch)
Thanks for the letters from Liam and Greg! greg> http://ftp.cvut.cz/vmware/vmware-any-any-update108.tar.gz Could you (or someone) please explain the step-by-step sequence to apply the above patch to install VMware-workstation-5.5.1-19175 on Debian/etch? Here's what I just did: o Made sure that I had the correct "linux-headers" installed o Ran ./vmware-installer.pl up until the point it had the "header file" problems (Note that I couldn't *first* apply the patch since /etc/vmware doesn't exist until at least a partial vmware install has been done.) o Once I got the "header file" error, I used Control-Z to suspend the install script. I then applied the above patch with ./runme.pl, and allowed it to go ahead and do the vmware config. o The modules built (with some warnings), o I then killed the suspended install script o Tried to run 'vmware' It didn't work ... 'vmware' won't run (missing libraries, etc). Sorry for being so dense ... -Kenneth -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact

It will patch the config source and then call vmware-config.pl Make sure you have linux-headers-2.6-"kernel flavor" installed. Once you have that, it'll be good. -- Novell's Directory Services is a competitive product to Microsoft's Active Directory in much the same way that the Saturn V is a competitive product to those dinky little model rockets that kids light off down at the playfield. -- Thane Walkup signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part

Re: VMware Workstation Module Compilation (etch)
du> It would be nice to see the full error log, if possible I can't seem to find one ... The install script just continues to prompt me for a valid header file: What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel? [/usr/src/linux/include] The only way "out" of the above is a Control-Z. Looking around (recursively) in the install directory once I am at the 'bash' prompt, shows no log file. Nothing in /tmp either. Where is the "full error log"? Thanks for your letter! -Kenneth -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble?
