There is another very long delay before I get a KDE login prompt.

while running say:

   startx -- :1 vt8

for a very long time top reports that XFree86 is consuming over 90% of cpu

running:

   tail -f /var/log/XFree86.1.log

gives:

# fc-cache

Sarge, and with either 2.2 or 2.6 kernels:

at boot up I get a login prompt at the F1 console ok.

After about 10 secs, the screen goes blank.

After another very long delay I get an hour glass in the
middle on the screen at F7.

There is another very long delay before I get a KDE login prompt.

How can I track this down please ?

 Joe.

Thanks a lot. That is one of the first things I've tried, but to no avail.

don't you see which part of the load process is being carried out when
you startx?

Yes, I described this in an earlier post where I tailed
/var/log/XFree86.1.log.

thanks

Oh. I didn't see the earlier post.

I suffer from slow gnome startup, ever since I de-installed the default
metacity window manager and tried running anything else. Never got round
to sorting it out. I avoid exiting my desktop as much as possible as a
result :(

Joe, I don't know if this is your problem based on your
log snippet, but, running fc-cache -f as root may fix
up your problem. You should do this whenever X is
updated.
