You seem to know how to get rid of it, but you obviously don't know how it
works. He probably didn't even realize that he had happy99 on his
machine, which which would have sent it to the list without his knowledge.

Sheesh! Talk about over-reacting.

You moron, stop sending trojans over the mailing list that's not funny.

For those of you that downloaded that program and got the nice fireworks
display you also got the trojan implanted on yours system. What it does is
extract certain files to the system directory and attaches a copy of itself
to every message you send out. To get rid of it delete ska.dll and ska.exe
in the system directory, it also does something to one of the winsock files,
I cant remember which. it like copies its own in and renames the old one
with either a .ska or a .old extension or possibly another. There a few web
sites showing how to get rid of it.

Hello,

for some days I have goten three messages via the mailinglist "DJGPP"
and "comp.os.msdos.djgpp" from "Endlisnis <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>" with an
UU-Encoded attachement "happy99.exe".

Now I have goten the same UU-Encoded attachement from
"debian-user@lists.debian.org".

Can anyone tell me whats going on ???

This EXE file contains the "W95/Happy99.1.trojan".

I was wondering, that the Virusscanner on my Mail-Server had
deleted the komplett INCOMING-Folder with the Mails.

Then I have goten the E-Mails from a friend with deactivated
Virus-Scanner and I have used the "F-PROT" to scan the files.

This is the result:
===

Virus scanning report - 8. May 1999 17:37

F-PROT 3.04a
SIGN.DEF created 3. February 1999
MACRO.DEF created 29. January 1999

Search: Local hard disks
Action: Automatic disinfection
Files: Standard file extensions
Switches: /ARCHIVE /PACKED /BEEP
No viruses found in memory.
No viruses were found in MBRs or hard disk boot sectors.

Scanning g:\_user\konzack\michelle\eudora\attach
G:\_USER\KONZACK\MICHELLE\EUDORA\ATTACH\HAPPY99.EXE Infection:
W95/Happy99.1.trojan
File deleted.

Suggestion:
===

To protect users and Mail-Systems (!!!) from Viruses disallow Attachements
from a kind oft this one.

With the first sending (from DJ Delorie) of the three messages I have lost
more then 150 Client E-Mails on my Server.

OK, I know, the UU-Encoded File was inside the Body, but this can be scanned
too.

bladeenc is good, its a shame about 8hz-mp3, they got yelled at about patent
infringements or some such, and had to remove the program from their site ..

I don't know if there is a Debian packge for it, but look for the
program called "bladeenc," it's free and considered one of the better
mp3 encoders. Another decent encoder is 8hz-mp3, at www.8hz.com.

I'm pretty sure this Happy99.exe thing is a virus. I don't think it
is malicious, but a pain nonethless. In short, don't run it
(shouldn't affect Linux-only users, though :)

I have been using BladeEnc, and it is quite good. You can download it at:
