There is no need to reinstall Debian to add KDE, or any other
desktop environment, or to switch from one to another.

sudo apt install kde-standard

If you can, reinstalls Debian as usual, my KDE's installation takes
about 10GB:

~$ LC_ALL=C.UTF-8 df /
Filesystem Type Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/mapper/ld0-lv2 ext4 28G 9.6G 17G 37% /

Therefore if you don't have space need for the /home/ directory it
should be fine for you.

You've sent mail to the Debian Community Team; our role is to try and
help people and to make the Debian project a welcoming environment.
That doesn't include providing user support for Debian installations,
I'm afraid. You'd be better asking on the debian-user mailing list.

I found that a Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8187B Wireless 802.11g
54Mbps Network Adapter works real well.
It also has Linux kernel support. Your best bet is going to be to buy
from thinkpenguin.com since all they're selling is linux-compatible
hardware and software and it's how I got this adapter. That being said,
this works only on 2.4 band and coming standard will require a 5.0 adapter
and all of those thinkpenguin.com sold at the time I bought mine needed to
be bracket mounted internally. Maybe choices have expanded since then I
don't know.

If you are a subscriber to the list, and you send an email to the list from
the email account you subscribed with, the email will reach the list. As is
the *NIX way, you will not normally be notified in case of success, only in
case of failure.

So the fact that you did not receive acknowledgement after posting to the
list does not imply that the post was not successful. If it had failed, you
should have received a warning.

I'm replying directly to you as well as the list since you are new and
may not be subscribed.

Go to the debian website and read the installation manual (not the short
HOWTO). Also, read the debian-reference, which is a bit out-of-date but
gives some good information to someone new to debian.

There's also lots of other documentation on the debian website.

The installation manual will have links to the correct installation
material. If your box can boot a CD and you are able to burn a CD, your
best bet is to download the Etch i386 netinst.iso file and burn t to CD.
Then boot the installer.

Good luck.

Doug.

The fact that after closing this window the machine behaves normally
again, seems to suggest, that that's where you should search for the
problem. Try to find out what the Settings Daemon does, maybe try to start
it manually under strace and see where it fails? Or just starting it in
the foreground might give some output on the terminal, look for verbouse
or debugging mode. Or follow the advises above - try to select another
theme, see if your sound works, etc.

Don't have any etch with X here, so, cannot verify myself.

Hi Rick,
while I do not know about the accuracy of your claim to the cause of the
error, I can make a point about Debian procedure: if you feel that a
Debian developer closed a bug report incorrectly and you can make a
claim that you feel this is incorrect, you can bring your case to the
Debian technical committee where this matter will be decided. And if the
committee agrees with you, then the Developer will then follow their
ruling.
Cheers,

true 'dat... OP "screen not found" wouldn't have anything to do with the video
drivers necessarily.. it could mean that there is no screen defined in
/etc/X11/xorg.conf

Device "rosewill gf 6600"

I have installed Debian Linux v. 3.1 (sarge) for an Alpha computer system. I am using a
DEC Alpha motherboard 164-LX running at 533 MHZ. I have tried using a Matrox Millennium
II video card in both MGA and VGA modes and have been getting an xfree86 server crash
saying that the "screen is not found". I have also tried an older Trident
video card running it in VGA mode with the same error.

I would like to know which video card is supported for a DEC Alpha by Debian
Linux without having to modify the kernel? I am sure that someone is out there
who is actually running a system like mine with a working video card? I would
like to know the make and model of the card that you are using and the extent

I am looking ahead for a reply that can be helpful to me in getting this system

I can't answer your question but I can suggest that you use an

In addition to the other posts suggestions you might look into setting up
ACPI to monitor the power button. Acpid will do a clean shutdown and
power-off on most modern machines, not just laptops.

Look at the sudo package, which enables you to give specific users
(or any user) root access for specific commands (or any command).

It looks like the driver for the Ensoniq es1371 sound chip
is supported in Linux through the es1371 module. Type

cd /lib/modules/`uname -r`

Then type

find . -iname '*es1371*'

You should get a couple drivers back -- one containing the
word 'oss', and another containing 'pci'. You'll need to do

modprobe es1371

to load the module. There are lots of other steps on the way
to getting your card to play sounds (this really ought to be
automatic, and in my experience normally is -- why didn't it
load automatically for you?), but that's a start.

A hint: you'll get much better responses to questions like

RE: your mail

2004-07-22 Thread Tony Uceda Velez

I tried that with no success. I left the default-display manager entry to
xdm. Simply creating that file and adding 'exec fluxbox' (without the
quotes). Upon starting X and getting my login window (under KDE) it halts
and can't get past loading any of the other services under X. I deleted the
file and restored as it was. Another Debian user suggested solely changing
~/.xsession. I somehow feel there is more to this. Finding some errors in
my ~/.xsession-errors file, I see errors pertaining to the following:

_IceTransmkdir: Owner of /tmp/.ICE-unix should be set to root
Invalid entry (missing '=') at /home/tonyuv/Desktop/Debian.desktop:2
Invalid entry (missing '=') at /home/tonyuv/Desktop/Debian.desktop:3
Invalid entry (missing '=') at /home/tonyuv/Desktop/Debian.desktop:4
Invalid entry (missing ']') at /home/tonyuv/Desktop/Debian.desktop:5

Looking at this file, I see the following:

[Desktop Entry]
Icon=deb
Type=Link
URL=file:/etc/kde2/debian.html

Any significance or adminissable error you think?

Thanks so much.

Fortran is still the language of choice for complex calculations for
several reasons, including support for parallel computing that are very
difficult to reproduce in other languages.

Think before posting ;-) You can get courses in C, C++, Java, PHP and
all other "mainstream" languages everywhere while finding a good source

Your XF86Config-4 Module section loads following modules:

Section "Module"
Load"GLcore"
Load"bitmap"
Load"dbe"
Load"ddc"
Load"dri"
Load"extmod"
Load"freetype"
Load"glx"
Load"int10"
Load"pex5"
Load"record"
Load"speedo"
Load"type1"
Load"vbe"
Load"xie"
EndSection

Use following command to regenerate a XF86Config-4 without the GLcore,
dri and glx modules:
# dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

I had the same problem with an i810e and an i815. I removed the modules
and it works now. But beware, not all i810's have this problem. I have
an older(?) i810e which worked with the modules. It seems that XFree86
4.1.0 has not all i810 supported. If you need the dri and glx modules
for e.g. 3d stuff I recommend to upgrade to 4.2.1 (look at
http://www.apt-get.org/ for woody backports).

So long

To setup a simple ssl-server just type 'apt-get install apache-ssl' and
edit /etc/apache-ssl/httpd.conf

There are options to buy an official certificate, but I don't know about
them..

apt-get remove apache
apt-get install apache-ssl

or have i missed something? i did this on my box for my own ssl based
needs, and it's really just a drop-in replacement. if you have complicated
configs, you might have to spend some time merging them into your new
config directory (/etc/apache-ssl) but otherwise it's a piece of cake.

i would give the installation a try with the 'bf24' kernel. i'm not
sure which .iso it's on, but it's definitely on one of them, and you
can also get the bootfloppies images off of ftp.debian.org as well.
i think that kernel has support for lots more stuff than the standard
2.2 kernels do.

libvorbisfile.so.0 is not in testing or unstable. It is in stable. The
libvorbis0 in unstable has libvorbis.so.0 and libvorbisfile3 has
libvorbisfile.so.3. Where are your artsd and libvorbis0 from?

My main machine at home runs Debian Woody. It is a Vaio PC505G slim
laptop. It's got a Pentium MMX 200MHz, 32MB RAM, a 2GB drive, internal
non-winmodem, and pcmcia ethernet card.

I use fvwm as my window manager running over X v4, and run phoenix (and
sometimes netscape) as my web browser, along with xmms in the background
streaming music into my stereo for me.

It runs plenty fast for most things, though flash is a bit sluggish and
I can't play most movies. Understand that I use emacs for text editing
and coding, and stay away from wysiwyg word processors.

I think you should be fine, so long as you don't want gnome2 running
enlightenment with the fancy ripple effect and xmms / netscape /
openoffice / evolution / nautilus all running at the same time... ;)

Let me know off-list if you want more info about my X configuration -- I
expect that will be the hardest thing to get going fast enough. Default
pretty setups these days crunch a whole lot of CPU... (I really like my
gnome with enlightenment looking all pretty at work... mmm fast
machine...)

Only if you aren't connecting it to the Internet. potato is still
supported by the security team, but probably not for all that much
longer (in relative terms); slink and older are no longer supported and
will almost certainly contain security holes.

That may make sensse from a technical point of view, but I doubt that
most people used to windows would like Potato better than Woody.
Chances are good that Woody will work, so it's worth a try.

I agree, except it's my understanding that bilbo, the machine that can
ping the Internet, is not on the cluster side of the network, but on
the other, or as Dave calls it, the "home" side. So if that's correct,
then the only machines that can't ping the Internet are on the cluster
network, behind buster. Since buster can ping the "home" network, the
"cluster" network, and the Internet, that led me to believe that only
forwarding is the problem with that machine.

Of course, I could still be wrong =)

application/x-zip is the mime type of the file. I can't help but
think that this is not the first problem you have to sort out. Your
headers are all spaced out (see how I've quoted them in this message)
and that is killing all the MUAs that receive the message - it is not

Binary representations of the addresses above:

eth1: addr: 11010010..1011.1110
mask: ...1110
bcast: 11010010..1011.10100100

Oddly enough, your broadcast address is not on the same subnet!? With
that ip address and netmask, a broadcast address of .159 would have be
more usual. Are you sure that broadcast is working properly on eth0?
(I'm not sure it's a problem though...)

eth1:2 addr: 11010010..1011.1010
mask: ...1110
bcast: 11010010..1011.10100100

[You have eth1 and eth:2; what happened to eth1:1 ? Just curious]

At least here the broadcast address is in the same subnet as the IP
address. [But again .159 would have been more usual]

Oddly enough, eth1:2 is on a different subnet than eth1. Is that
intentional?

> Have I made an error or is it not routed properly from my isp ?

Looking at the numbers above, I would *guess* that you have been
allocated 210.15.251.224 ... 210.15.251.255 ? Is that correct? If that
is not your IP range, I wouldn't expect the ISP to route it to you...

For starters, I would double-check the IP addresses/netmasks with your
ISP; if you have gotten any of them wrong, all bets are off...

no, this is a feature in the linux kernel, which can mount FAT32 just
like any other filesystem. debian has no doing in this, any other
linux (with a kernel > 2.2.x) can do it.

FWIW, this is even easier in woody:

apt-get install nvidia-kernel-src nvidia-glx-src

but you'll still have to follow the instructions for using the new
server via XF86Config-4 once you have built and installed your debs.

Look on google for the Xfree86 site. I found that support for

Xfree version 3.36 and 4.0.

To get the best performance from your TNT card, you'll want to use
X 4.x, and use the official Nvidia drivers. Since potato only comes
with X 3.3.6, you'll need to upgrade that. Have a look at this
website for information on how to get X4.0.3 for potato:

http://people.debian.org/~cpbotha/xf403_potato/READ.THIS

X 4.x has an nv server which will work with your card, but you'll have
no 3d accelleration, so if you want 3d accelleration, you'll want to
get the official Nvidia drivers from here (once you've got X running
with the nv server):

http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?PAGE=linux

Get the NVIDIA_GLX and NVIDIA_kernel tar.gz files and install them as
per the instructions in the README (located on the above page).

That should be all you need to do to get decent 3d and 2d
accelleration from your card. Post back to the list if you have any
further problems.

> 2.I have some usb-devices, how do I install modules for these
> devices?

The best starting point is http://www.linux-usb.org. There you can
check if your devices are supported, and if they are, you'll probably
need to recompile a later revision kernel since the stock 2.2.17 that
comes with potato probably has very little in the way of usb support.

Install the kernel-package (apt-get install kernel-package), then get
the latest 2.2.19 kernel from your local mirror, eg

ftp://ftp.de.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.2/

Read the documentation in /usr/doc/kernel-package, and build a usb
enabled kernel for your devices. If you have any problems, post them
back to the list and we'll have a look.

Cheers,
Sean

Re: your mail

2001-06-27 Thread Vineet Kumar
A good first setp will be to do some reading:

http://www.debian.org/releases/potato/i386/install

To do a network-install, the most common way is to download a set of
boot floppies (install disks) and being the installation process.
After it does some initial setup (including your network card and
network settings) it will allow you to complete the installation via
your Internet connection.

The disk images you have to download may vary depending on your
machine's hardware setup. See

ftp://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/dists/Debian2.2r3/main/disks-i386/current/README.txt

for some more info. The disk images themselves are available at the
same location. More specifically: most likely, I think, you'll disks
want the following:

ftp://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/dists/Debian2.2r3/main/disks-i386/current/images-1.44/udma66

You'll do yourself no favors by skipping the READMEs. Good luck, and
we'll be here to help should you need it.

There are many different methods. Read the installation instructions at -

The above is from "/usr/share/doc/mbr/README"

My sugestion is to use a boot floppy (you did make a boot floppy, didn't
you?) and press "F", then see "man install-mbr" and the above README. You
may have your master boot reccord manager pointing at the wrong partition
(should point to the partition with /boot on it), or the necessary info is
beyond reach.

An alternative suggestion, that was at one time guarenteed to start a flame
war for just bringing it up, is to install LILO on the mbr instead of the
mbr manager. See "man lilo.real" for more info about this.

Good luck and have fun.

overclocked it, if you machine is overclocked, you need to set it back to its
