You can run it as unprivileged user and put where you want or as root and it will default in /opt (just type in console "./RealPlayer11GOLD.bin" in the directory where you downloaded it). It works on Lenny at least, but not really better than Mplayer's plugin... Yet Another Tom -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? I too did a 32->64 bit upgrade (I replaced my 7 year old tired athlon 1000 cpu and motherboard with an ECS motherboard and 5200 dual core amd64 cpu) recently. But I'm on (for right now) ubuntu hardy heron 8.04. Things might be a little different. First of all, do other web videos work in your browser (youtube for instance)? Since realplayer is strictly 32-bit, are there ways to listen to your content with mplayer, gxine, or other tools? I have yet to install realplayer on this new rig. Look for a package called ia32-libs & ia32libs-gtk. The package might be named differently in Debian, as well as the codecs (w32codecs, but I have w64codecs installed here. I can play the NY Times videos OK as well as CNN videos, radio stations (haven't tested extensively, most seem to work). See if you can coax them to play the content in a different way. Oftentimes all you need is a package that supplies the cook library, which w64codecs supplies, so I haven't yet found a needed reason to have realplayer installed here. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Saying that though, I'm listening to the BBC at the moment on FC2 using Opera, and Realplayer. Firefox is setup with Mplayerplug-in, but you have to do extra work to get Opera to use Mplayerplugin, and I havn't bothered. Recently though with the latest Opera version on Etch, I've recently been getting some strange output when listening to the BBC. Echoes, and breaks in the transmission. I'm on dialup, and the breaks are the sort of thing I get when I go to a site that streams at a high bandwidth, which I can't handle. I use it to view streaming Windows Media Video (on the BBC website) and Quicktime on AMD64 Etch with no problems. As you're obviously using an X86 machine you can get the binary codecs for Mplayer and it should play Real Video, sort of goes against my first statement but if needs must. MPlayer on AMD64 will play BBC Radio live streams as they are only audio. This at least should work. I can't get Real Video to work on AMD64 but you might with the binary codecs. Realplayer doesn't play, reeally.
In the last few days, Realplayer won't play any files in a browser. At CSPAN, e.g., neither the embedded videos nor the standalone option will run. Realplayer is called, but nothing happens. Video at the BBC also will not play, either plugin or standalone. I thought maybe it was Firefox, but the problem recurs in Konqueror, Epiphany and Iceweasel. Firefox has the following in about:config: network.protocol-handler.app.rtsp user set string /usr/bin/realplay Also: [Mon Apr 16] edj:~$ locate nphelix /home/edj/.mozilla/plugins/nphelix.so /home/edj/.mozilla/plugins/nphelix.xpt /usr/lib/firefox/plugins/nphelix.so /usr/lib/firefox/plugins/nphelix.xpt /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins/nphelix.so /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins/nphelix.xpt /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/nphelix.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/nphelix.xpt /usr/lib/mozilla-snapshot/plugins/nphelix.so /usr/lib/mozilla-snapshot/plugins/nphelix.xpt /usr/lib/netscape/plugins-libc6/nphelix.so /usr/lib/netscape/plugins-libc6/nphelix.xpt I thought, too, that maybe Realplayer somehow corrupted, so I purged and re-installed. Same problem. It's Realplayer 10 Gold installed from debian.multimedia. If some library or other is missing, I'd have thought that the re-install would have brought it down. Great! I had more or less given up on the same problem. Helix wouldn't play radio, Realplayer10 from the real site cannot be installed in etch because of missing libraries. But www.debian-multimedia.org solved it. In addition to the w32codecs, I had to remove the helix player and install the realplayer version from d-multimedia, but then it worked perfectly. Thanks for the advice: I'll even try it on the laptops now, though it's usually impossible to set up sound on them. -- richard -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Re: Installing realplayer plugin for Firefox - help
the easiest way is to use the debian-multimedia archive. add "deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org etch main" to /etc/apt/source.list, then do "apt-get update && apt-get install w32codecs totem-mozilla" as root. this will install multimedia plugin support for iceweasel/mozilla as well as the supporting realplayer codec. good luck. mike On Jan 14, 8:10 am, Julian Gilbey <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Stuck - anyone got any ideas? > > I've got nphelix.so in /usr/lib/firefox/plugins and nphelix.xpt in > /usr/lib/firefox/components but firefox still doesn't recognise the > existence of the plugin for a .RAM file. Hello, I installed helix-player in my box, but when I want to play an mp3 file it complains that RealPlayer is not present. Ok, I downloaded RealPlayer and ran RealPLayer10Gold.bin in /home/user1/ and now /home/user1/RealPLayer/realplay runs fine, but when I run helix-player it deosn't find realplay. Can someone explain to me where I must install the directory ReaPlayer and the files contained in it, so that helix-player finds reaplay and user2, user3 ... can play helix with RealPlayer ? tia -- Gérard

If you're using KDE, open up the control center, go to KDE Components, File Associations, and look for the rm mime type. If you're using Gnome, there's probably some configuration tool that does that (sorry, but I don't use Gnome, so I don't know). If you're using Fluxbox, BlackBox, or some other, then I'm also at a loss. Hope that helps, Justin -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? How to unregister gxine to play Real files in RealPlayer
Hi everybody, I've Googled for this but came up with nothing helpful - sorry if it's been answered before! Problem: I have until recently played real media files with gxine, which by the way did not play files embedded in the web page but always started an external instance. No problem. Today installed RealPlayer10GOLD because I thought this might give a superior picture and better (louder) sound. This is true. I also hoped it would play embedded in page when specified to do so. Another problem encountered was that gxine refused to play real video on the BBC site although it worked fine on other sites. Unfortunately I have no idea how to disassociate gxine and associate RealPlayer with rm files. Anyone sharing how to do this - thanks in advance. Kind Regards, B.Hoffmann -- B.Hoffmann <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

There are variants, such as totem, gxine of course, as well as mplayer (which I compiled from source) but I haven't been able to play everything. npr has been an issue, for one. I have realplayer of course installed, but the others will from time to time complain about a missing library (libcook.so). I recall encountering this problem before when I was running Mandrake). ISTR that having libcook was a big requirement to be able to play real media audio or video. Otherwise, mplayer seems to be the best thing in terms of being able to play files (especially different types of video files), but what seems to have happened to xine? It seems to be gone, having been "replaced" (as far as I can tell) by gxine and/or totem, neither seem to work well for playing most video files over here, although that has not been entirely true in the past. What I've been seeing with totem/gxine in particular are tons of X11 resource (i.e., BadAlloc, insufficient resources for operation) issues - these also happen to come up from time to time with mplayer, but at least with the latter you can specify -vo x11 as a parameter on the command line. With the others, this does not seem to be possible. The other thing I don't understand re: gxine is the need to run lirc. -- David E. realplayer firewall problem
I am using Sarge realplayer 10.0.6-0.1 with guarddog 2.4.0-1 firewall. I get no sound from any of the audio links on the following page, with either the mozilla realplayer plugin or with /usr/bin/realplay run from the command line: http://www.pbs.org/kcet/tavissmiley/archive/200601/# Apparently my firewall is blocking packets several seconds after realplay starts. Each attempt to play audio results in a series of dropped packet log entries with different destination ports, which seem to occur over the entire 64K port range, e.g 31494, 26072, 11644, and 15922. Here is an example entry: DROPPED IN= OUT=eth0 SRC=10.0.0.2 DST=149.48.144.71 LEN=31 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=64 ID=0 DF PROTO=UDP SPT=6970 DPT=31494 LEN=11 My firewall script was generated by guarddog, with realplayer enabled. In the past I have had to add manual guarddog entries to handle realplayer sites with odd DST addresses, but they used a single destination port, or narrow range of ports. This is the first realplayer site I've noticed that doesn't seem to have a predictable destination port. It sounds like your sound module is not installed, or udev is not configured properly. Those missing device files should be created by udev when the sound module is installed. If you're using alsa, you can run alsaconf (as root) to determine the correct module, then make sure it's installed (lsmod or modprobe). I don't know anything about esd; you'd think it would at least install the sound module, but it's worth checking. -David -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". I don't really know how to put this since people have been kind enough to point me towards mplayer - mplayer needs a plugin that I have to compile from source and I just don't have the time or energy to support entertainment stuff on my system to that level at the moment. There actually is an mplayer plugin and it works sweet (supports full-screen and saving the streaming media, so it's much better than the lame proprietary lard you usually run into). realplayer 10 hassles
Using RealPlayer 10 and it won't output sound anymore, just video, when trying *.ram feeds from websites. If I try playing an ogg file, realplayer dies. I didn't have time to check it out when it first stopped and now it's been a while, so I can't remember what else I had been doing when it stopped (which might give a clue why). I re-installed it with synaptic, and when that didn't work I re-installed it direct from the download, but nothing worked. I'm using gnome. Is it having trouble with my sound drivers? ta Adam -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
realplayer 10 in firefox and mozilla
I'm using realplayer 10, and it doesn't play sound anymore - used to, but stopped. It loads up, buffers the stream, and then makes a sort of high-pitched 'beep' and then just plays, but with no sound. I'm using gnome, if that has anything to do with it - and xmms works fine, and totem, using the OSS driver. Realplayer also refuses to cache streams, and I get a pause every 3 seconds or so. I tried uninstalling and re-installing. Thanks Adam -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Also, I would suggest you do the same for mplayer from the mplayer website (http://www.mplayerhq.hu). problems with realplayer
Hi, I'm trying to play some Realplayer listening samples from the amazon.com website (using Firefox). >From realplayer.com I've successfully downloaded and installed the recent version of realplayer. However, when I click on the audio sample and choose realplay (the application I've installed), realplayer appears on my screen but then the error message is issued: "The content you are trying to play uses an audion codec that is obsolete and no longer supported. Please contact the content provider about using a supported codec." Do you have any idea how to install and use a supported codec or how to play the samples (format *.rm) with a different application? Thank you.
