US Robotics 56K PCI winmodem + Woody
I've recently bought a US Robotics 56K PCI winmodem. I realized the last part (winmodem) just a few days ago. How do I install it in Woody? Currently I'm using Woody, unstable/testing and kernel 2.4.20. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

You don't; if this has changed (with respect to USR winmodems), I'd like to know. -- Don Werve [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Unix System Administrator) Yorn desh born, der ritt de gitt der gue, Orn desh, dee born desh, de umn bork! bork! bork! -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. RE: US Robotics 56K PCI winmodem + Woody
Having recently gone around this issue with a different win modem, I believe that USRobotics has not released documentation for their winmodem (which I also have) I sidestepped the issue by buying a winmodem for $25 which is supported (I didn't know it was a win modem when I bought it) from CompUSA. They don't give a model number, just SKU #289204. It's actually an HSP56 MicroModem A few days ago I stopped by Sam's Club, and I saw a modem which claimed it was explicitly supported by linux... selling for about $15 -- David -Original Message- From: Aedificator [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, February 27, 2003 3:22 PM To: Debian Subject: US Robotics 56K PCI winmodem + Woody I've recently bought a US Robotics 56K PCI winmodem. Re: US Robotics 56K PCI winmodem + Woody
I've recently bought a US Robotics 56K PCI winmodem. I realized the last part (winmodem) just a few days ago. How do I install it in Woody? Currently I'm using Woody, unstable/testing and kernel 2.4.20. YES These modems are supported. They problem is that the entire driver is not GPL'd (like some would prefer) because of the proprietary core interface. If your modem is a PCTel/HSP (or some other such variant), the howto is here: http://www.peacefulaction.org/sayamindu/pctel.html If is is a Lucent variant (like the vast majority), you can obtain a .deb (install with 'dpkg -i file.deb') for your particular kernel version here: http://www.sfu.ca/~cth/ltmodem/dists/debian/8.00a3/ or here: http://www.physcip.uni-stuttgart.de/heby/ltmodem/dists/debian/8.00a3/ If you are interested in additional details they can be found here: http://www.sfu.ca/~cth/ltmodem/index.html along with a link to a partial source distribituion that you can compile against your kernel (assuming it is not a stock kernel). The install will pop out a warning about contaminating your distro with a non-GPL driver, but is just for information (it does not affect the function). The Lucent variant is what I have (in my Toshiba Laptop) and I have succesfully used the driver for a while (as well as the RedHat version when I briefly ran RH8.0). -Roberto Sanchez _ STOP MORE SPAM with the new MSN 8 and get 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. It's a USRobotics WinModem, which is quite possibly the only winmodem that does not work under Linux and never will. -- Don Werve [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Unix System Administrator) Yorn desh born, der ritt de gitt der gue, Orn desh, dee born desh, de umn bork! bork! bork! -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe.
