Why the BLEEP was my sound removed?

2008-10-19 Thread Rico Secada
Hi,

I just upgraded from Etch to Lenny on my laptop.

Normally I get sound working using the snd-maestro3 module, but I can
see that support has been removed.

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=464191

This is something that is affecting a lot of users.

Yes, I can use 2.6.18 instead of 2.6.26, and yes I can download and
installed firmware manually, but hell then I might as well run
something different if I have to mess around like that to get sound
working.

Can someone please explain why the BLEEP support was removed?

Rico.

It was probably removed because the BLEEP is mostlikely non-BLEEP and
as such would violate the BLEEP. But that's just a BLEEP.

That was what I thought, a pain in the BLEEP. :-)

This response to the bug that you referenced explains exactly how to
get sound to work again.

Probably because it violates the DFSG (Debian Free Software Guidelines).

Someone already mentioned this, but thanks anyway.

So you did. My apologies.

I disagree with you, though, about your reaction to having to
manually d/l the binary firmware. Using Linux means sometimes
having to get your fingers a bit greasy.

I manage a lot of machines daily, and yes normally I agree, and I get
my fingers greasy plenty. On my desktop I generally don't want to get
grease anywhere, I haven't got the time. :-)

At first I didn't see the licens issue and I apologies for my reaction.

You can't have Cheap, Easy and Secure. Choose two, and from there
determine your desktop OS:

Cheap and Easy: Windows. (Well, not really, but that's the fiction.)
Cheap and Secure: Linux.
Easy and Secure: OSX.

I disagree with you on this. I have been working with Debian for about
ten years now, and there is nothing difficult about it. That's not the
point.

My point was that I didn't want to mess with something a
non-debian-way, to get sound working, but like I said, I missed the
problem about the licens, I thought there was another reason for remove
the module.
