Bah, WindowMaker doesn't use _that_ much RAM. :-)

$ apt-cache search windowmaker | grep theme
theme-converters - Convert WindowMaker/GTK+/Sawmill theme packages to .debs

You may find that package being what you're after.
http://wm.themes.org is also very good as well, with over 2000 themes.

Since installing a theme just consists of copying files into the right spots
there is no need to have .debs just go to www.themes.org and find something you
like and do what it says.

Windowmaker themes?

2000-11-02 Thread Glyn Millington
Good morning!

I've tried Gnome and KDE 2 but am utterly hooked on Windowmaker. But in
these dark damp English autumn days it would be nice to have something
brighter on the desktop than the tasteful and elegant but quiet themes that
came with my Potato CD's - but I don't want to mess up my tasteful and
elegant Debian filesystem.

So is there a "debian way" of installing Windowmaker themes - or is there
somewhere a repository of .deb themes that I haven't found yet?

TIA

targballs into debs.

Hello all;

I upgraded to WindowMaker-gnome a couple days ago and everything works
fine except my themes are no longer available. I didn't even notice it
until yesterday when I went to change to a different theme. The only
themes available for selection are the default 4. All my themes are
still located in ~/GNUstep/Library/WindowMaker yet are not available?!?

System:

Debian GNU/Linux 2.2 (potato/frozen)

Any ideas or suggestions?

If you go to the relevant pages (wm.themes.org, e.themes.org,

To debianize them you can use theme-converters. The advantage to this over
untarring the themes is that you now have the themes under package control.

NB theme-converters uses perl, so if you want to use the potato version you
will have to download and upgrade all of the perl stuff to since there was a
major overhaul of the perl packages.

gamera:~$ apt-cache show theme-converters
Package: theme-converters
Version: 1.6

Architecture: all

Description: Convert WindowMaker/GTK+ theme packages to .debs
This takes .tar.gz files from, for example, wm.themes.org or
gtk.themes.orig, and converts them into .deb packages.
 .
The .deb packages it produces are acceptable for local use, but are
not really policy-conformant, notably since they cannot reliably
 create a reasonable /usr/doc//copyright file.
 .
Packages made using this package are named "wmaker--theme" for
WindowMaker themes and "gtk--theme" for GTK themes

I install, as another option, the themes in

The themes are then accessible to all users and using a directory
under /usr/local don't conflict with the package system.

I am sure adrian meant something more like:
gunzip theme.tar.gz | tar xvf -

but, the tar that comes with most half-way recent linux distributions,
debian included, can do this instead:
tar zxvf theme.tar.gz

Be careful what you wish for, it might come true:

  http://master.debian.org/~mmagallo/wmaker-theme-package_0.1_all.deb

This has some rough edges. Something that should be high on the TODO list
is fixing themes (that s|~/GNUstep/Library/WindowMaker/|| detail).

The package is lintian-clean, and the packages it produces are lintian-
clean, too.

I don't think its 'fair' to customize apt for one program
(wmaker) and not other programs. Generally, apt is going to get
more complex as time goes on (i.e. GUI interface), so adding this
kind of special-purpose complexity is not a good idea.

I think the best solution would be something like the kernel-package
package that takes a common formated tree, such as the themes from
*.themes.org and creates a Debian packages out of it. This will save
space on the main archive and allow for the latest theme to be added to
the system without having to wait for a maintainer to upload it to the
archive. Just grab what ever one you want and build your own package
and install it.

WindowMaker themes -> Debian packages

1999-02-17 Thread Daniel Burrows
Hi. Over the weekend, I wrote a script that converts WindowMaker themes to
Debian packages automatically. (the themes have to follow wm.t.o's packaging
policy). I think it would be useful for other Debian users but I don't really
know what to do with it. So, based on looking over Debian's mailing lists,
I'm mentioning it here. (would a different list have been more appropriate?)

The script can do a number of useful things, including converting .tar.gz
theme files to .deb packages, downloading themes from wm.t.o and then
converting them, and installing the packages. I think it may go against
Debian policy in that it drops all the themes into the section
wmaker-themes, but that should be easily fixed..lintian also tells me that
I need a Copyright file, unfortunately that's hard to guess from the package
file. (maybe I could try to extract it from the .lsm...)

Anyway, in the hope that it's useful, here it is.

  Daniel Burrows

PS - I just read the Weekly Newsletter and noticed discussion of distributing
WindowMaker, E, etc themes as Debian packages. I suppose that this is somewhat
relevant to that. Personally, I think that I'd rather preview the themes
on the Web page and then install them with the script but...
