Re: X install problems
Dear Brian, you should not have wiped Debian off because it's great :-( . Please understand: To help you we must know 1. what exactly you configured 2. what specific error occurred. The easiest way for that is to attach these files to your message: /etc/X11/XF86Config and /var/log/XFree86.0.log . X install problems
I'm having problems installing X. I'm installing using official debian cds. One thing I didn't note in my earlier email is that I didn't install LILO but used a boot disk. My monitor has a the following: H 30 - 71 kHz at a max of 1280x1024 V 50 - 160 Hz My video card is a NVIDIA Riva TNT2 with 30MB of memory. My mouse is a PS/2 which I install under /dev/psaux. The installer usually takes all this information and I choose to install xdm, I try to install one of the X packages from the simple package selection and then I am later asked which server I want. I choose SVGA. I am then asked to configure X with xfree86config. I have tried not doing this which results in no XF86Config file. If I do configure it one of two things happens. - I get error messages saying can't connect to the X server, errno 111 - xdm never comes up and when I use startx I get a screen that is roughly 4 times the size of my monitor. I'm sorry but I don't have a XF86Config file because I wiped debian off my machine. Brian
Re: woody isos,stuff ( Lee's x-install probs)
Linuxiso.org now has woody isos up on their site. Don't know when they posted them but I emailed them about a month ago when I was sorting through a pile of 'where can I get woody iso' postings and now, tada! Also on a random note I was cleaning up and found a useful white paper from ibm 'linux questions and answers.' which addresses a lot of new user questions specifically for window users migrating to linux-if that's of use to anyone. Don't have a link but surely google.com ibm linux white paper and title will do. Thanx for note on that Justin, I appreciate it alot. I was gonna ask a good place from whiich to get woody. The iso site is a good one I think, they even have a tutorial on downloading iso (which I need to read as well). My x install affair..I had no idea potato was using ver 3.6 for x..could be a part of my probs there ? Thanx a ton for whoever put that little tidbit up recently. Altho I'd of thought for sure permedia 2 would be cool, even said it was..somewhere..lol. Anyway..undeterred I go :-) Lee

It sounds like you did'nt install the complete X... ;) I have had the same error (errno 111), but cannot seem to recall the exact packages missing. But if you are installing via the installer, it shouldn't be true... :) Personally I think X is easier to setup last, manually, using APT. If I were you, I'd install debian again, without X, and take it step-by step. Start by identifying what xserver you should use with 'xviddetect enter'. Then install it with 'APT-GET install xserver-your type here' Install xserver-common, xfonts-base, xfonts-100dpi, xfonts-75dpi, xfonts-scalable and xbase-clients. Then you should be able to start X with 'XF86_your-type-here' If that works the only thing left to make it usable is to install a windowmanager. Hope this helps somewhat... Pontus

Pontus You're right Pontus,,guess it was my frustration. Apologies to all. I do know the riff here. Ok..once again from the top. It's potato.. video card is a tnt2 m64 (agp,32 mg) .made by pny tech. I got it from comp usa ( i hate to be forced into a position to go there)...anyways. I'm using an amd 750. Now..presently I'm putting this on a drive with 98se (20 gig quantum drive) but if I can even get to a decent install at all I'd like to replace mandrake (which is on its own drive, same box).. w/potato (or woody).. Ok..so I've tried using a pci card permedia 2 (8 mg). I've tried a number of diff bios settings..video shadowing off/on. chip caches off/on. Slow down then speed up ram timing (ddr here). PNP off/on..irq's auto/manual. There is no virus thingy with this bios. Now, I'm using the advanced method here as I like to pick my own packaging. I'm fairly hip to the dependency needs (the installer makes it real easy, it seems..lol. I've tried installing w/gnome included, and w/out... tried it with that unix desktop package and w/out. Was thinking there would be a conflict there, but never any messages to that effect. I made sure the complete x window system was included, and to not over ride any conflicts. Now, I have a rage 128 (32 mg,agp ) card I can try if the list feels this may be a solution ? I've also heard good things about the matrox products, and their support of linux? Ok..so I seem to be cool until I try to startx. I can cruise via midnight commander, visit linuxconf + a few other tasks I'm sure, just nothing that uses an x interface. Alright, I'm off to work some more on it and I'll check in later, hopefully with some good results. Look above this error message; what you've quoted is pretty much the generic I can't start X for some reason error message; what's above it is where you'll likely find the real problem. If you have a fast internet connection, you might consider changing your /etc/apt/sources file to point to testing (woody) or unstable (sid) and do an apt-get update followed by apt-get upgrade to upgrade from Potato to Woody or Sid. I think there's a fairly large jump in X between Potato and Woody (like, from X ver3 to ver4?), and I found that I had less trouble getting X working from sid than from potato. But if you want to stick with Potato, like I said above, look at the messages before the error message you quoted. Kent

Upon reboot x cannot be found (as it wasn't installed). I've tried with a number of diff video cards agp and pci, numerous settings in the bios. Searched in the documentation, and am really at a loss as to what to do now. I'm doing the advanced install, and am left with no dependancy problems from what I can see. Are there any suggestions as to how to handle this issue ? Thank you all very much for your time, and any starters that may help me overcome this.
X Install problems-Re-Install X only ?
Hi Folks, I've now got myself a copy of the 4 binary cd's,the 2.2_r4 version. I made it to the point of configging x where upon the install went badly wrong. It found my video card well enough ( an nvidia tnt2 m64 something w/32 mg o' ram :-)...it's an agp card.. the motherboard is a K7S5A w/an athlon 750 256 meg o'ram...anyways.. the xconfig file never got installed..I know this. It was trying to load,I got a message saying to push ok to switch to graphics mode..then I'd get an error message something along the lines of ernno11 ? It did not give me a signal 11..(at least that I know of) like I was getting when trying to install this in another box . Which I never did get to install...(an FIC 503+, k6 2-500 in an AT case) Well I had to do a crtl-alt-delete to get the machine to stop cycling between the error messages because x was certainly not going to load that I could see. So I get back to log in well enough (am able to do so,as root too ). I'm even able to cruise my directories via midnight commander..get to linuxconf and a few other places..just not load x (of course not cause xconfig never got loaded !!) When I type startx now I get errors along the lines of /usr/bin/x11/xauth error in loading shared libraries libXmu.so.6 cannot open shared libraries Or xinit error and the like... So my question is..how do I load x again in Debian without going thru a complete install again ? I took the advanced route (omg the the package selection here is outstanding). I love what I see from debian so far, just wish I could get it to run..lol. If I was still in Mandrake I'd know what to do, but the vibes from Debian are really nice :-). So once again I thank you all so very much for your time !! Lee

packages needed for basic X install?

But the mouse cursor is not present and the mouse buttons are not effective. At this point I don't think the screen is frozen because initially "enlightenment" scrawls in the center of the screen. The mouse is a kensington track ball.If necessay I would get another pointing device. But it was working under an OLD ver of Slackware. It is installed under windows as a PS/2. I my startx into alog to capture it. If you need it and the login file I can provide both. X install
I've had got a working X window system with some window manager like icewm. I got a new card(Asus v3800 riva tnt2). I've the X source 3.3.5 . I succesfully maked the X source( 'make World' ) . My question is: when I 'make install' does something wrong? Which new programs will be installed? Then can I remove any previous package? X install ERROR
I AM NEW. It is getting better. I see more than the S prompt once in a while! Installed the Linux system (CD's) again tonight that I configured with dselect configure. I am using an Intel 740 2D/3D Graphics Accelerator chip (set). Under dselect configue I tried to set the video adaptor to 480/620 but specified no driver (or card) because the Intel 740 was not listed). On the last X set up screen the text was cut off on the right side about half away across (I think) and was quite large. I had to choice but to click OK. After, executing either X -probeonly /tmp/x.out 21 (no error and returned no change) -OR- X -probeonly /tmp/x.out (could not find file error). When I execute X the screen goes blank and disk activity implies it is loading, but when the screen re-appears, I see the $ prompt and nothing more. When I execute startx it likewise goes blank, but am returned to $ with these error messages: _X11 TranSocket UNIX Connect:can't connect: err no=111 giving up XINIT:connection refused (err no. 111): unable to connect to X server XINIT: no such process (err no 3): Server error. 1. I guess that this is an SVGA card, in which case install the XF86_SVGA package and run XF86Setup. You need to select SVGA as the server and then just tell it the video ram c. Re: LibICE and general X install
When trying to install lib6 and many x-related packages to get x running, I keep being unable to install them, as dpkg tells me that I haven't got libICE something-or-other. I looked thru www.debian.org/packages and can't find it. I got this when installing xlib6. However, I just installed it with dpkg -i --force-depends xlib6*.* This forces dpkg to ignore all dependencies, and xlib6 seems to run perfectly. Also one of the packages says it needs ccp whatever that is. That's just a package, available from Debian. Try searching for ccp. Also, when I'm trying to install xserver (the S3 version) I'm told it can't find a mouse at /dev/mouse because it doesn't exist. I know it doesn't but don't know how to get it... Plus, whenever trying to run xdm the screen completely packs in and I have to reboot. I'm told I should run XF86Setup but it says it's not there despite instructions in x's doc files. Try running /usr/sbin/xbase-configure If that doesn't work, type find / -name xf86config* to look for the the text-based config file, then run that. If dselect or dpkg says your xserver isn't configured, you might try running through [C]onfigure once or twice in dselect. I cannot find 'xf86config' or 'XF86Setup' on the system. Because configuration is incomplete, this could mean either it's not there, or you're not seeing it. You can always run the xserver post install script in /var/lib/dpkg/info/ and confirm that the files in the xserver list file, also in /var/run/dpkg/info/ exist. (There's no sense running configure if the files aren't there, and I don't know what kind of problem you encountered.) Should I remove X and re-install, or is there another way? Sometimes dselect is quirky and it takes a couple tries, I've found. If that doesn't work, I'd remove my X-server, then confirm that no outstanding conflicts or dependencies exist in dselect by running though installation in dselect, and then run through installation again in dselect, choosing your xserver. I think that XF86Setup (nicer than xf86config), is only in the VGA xserver, reason being that this is supposed to be a good default. -- David Stern -- http://weber.u.washington.edu/~kotsya [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . See, if you do all your work on a remote machine, then you don't need an X server but you can still use X applications. But in your case, you need to install one of xserver-* plus xbase. If it still doesn't work after doing this, or if these are already installed, then remove and re-install might help, but in general this is not a solution to problems: this is not Winblows, where `reinstall' is the cure to all problems. -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . X install under 1.2
Greetings, This is my first post to this list. I have looked through some of the archives and ran a search against the archives but have not found anything to help me with this problem. I have installed 1.2 on a 486-66 with a Diamond Speedstar Pro. I followed the recent recommendations and installed in order: xbase, xfnt75,xserver-vga16,xserver-svga. XF86Setup generated a missing font error so I installed xfntbase and xfntscl. The config seems to work fine but startx generates an error 'no screens found _X11TransSocketUNIXConnect: Can't connect: errno = 111'. A previous attempt using xdm generated a flashing screen problem which I could only cure by rm /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XF86Config. I have also installed xlib6. Re: X install under 1.2
Jim, Did I read your post right? Did you rm XF86Config!!! XF86Config is the configuration file for the X system. It contains all the information about your graphics card, screen, mouse, and other important information that your X client needs to run. The flashing screen problem is most likely a problem with the screen and/or graphics card setup. You need to produce a XF86Config file for your particular hardware setup. You can either read the documentation on the XF86Config and edit the sample (that you deleted), or you can use the xf86config program to produce a config file that should work if you know what hardware you have. However, the config files produced by xf86config are minimal to get X running, you can squeeze much more performance out of even modest hardware with a little reading and hacking (I have 768x562 from a 10 year old VGA monitor that I found at a garage sale for $10). Look in the /usr/X11/lib/X11/doc directory for some good documentation and good luck!!!
