Hamm -- Slink: 1. Compose-key lost 2. X11-display problem

1999-06-12 Thread Johann Spies
Hallo,

Last night I upgraded my mixed hamm/slink/potato system to a
slink-based system.

Everything is working satisfactorily now except for the two problems
mentioned in the subject line.

1. I cannot get the compose key working again in console mode. When this
happened in my previous upgrade I solved it by gzipping and copying the
file /drivers/char/defkeymap.map from my kernel-source (2.2.9)tree to
/etc/kbd/default.map.gz. It did not help this time. I even copied the
backup-file I had from my previous /etc/kbd/default.map.gz but that did
not help.

I hope somebody can help me with this one. I cannot afford to spend
another day or two reconfiguring my system.

2. I have gnome installed and use icewm with it. I use startx.
Xwindows comes up in 1024x768-mode and CrtlAltKP_+/KP_- does
not change anythin in the display. How can I repair that?

The display section in my XF86Config contains the following lines:

What does grep CONFIG_BLK_DEV_FD /usr/src/linux/.config say?

Another problem is that it seems that old way of
copying kernel (2.2.5) to another harddisk of floppy by doing
dd with previosly set root device by rdev also does not work.
Booting hangs at root device mounting point. What I am doing wrong?

I simply cp the bzImage to the /boot of all my different

I think I added apt as a method in dselect, and then let dselect to its

hamm/slink gotcha

1999-03-08 Thread Nathan O. Siemers

Hello all:

Hamm (up to date as of about 3 months ago) update to slink using
dselect gives the errors (upon Install):

internal error - no filename at -e line 12, P chunk 14.

installation script returned error exit status 1.
Press RETURN to continue.

Anyone have a clue why I am getting this behavior? I have a local
mirror of the debian archive that I believe I am pointing to
correctly.

Thanks,

This makes me think twice about upgrading my whole system again even if
Debian is supposed to make that easy. On my previous upgrade 1.3 to Hamm,
it took me nearly 3 days and many hours to get all my user programs
running again and fixing all the broken configurations. Getting my mail

I would not like to go through that again.

Under Hamm the messages would all go straight to my mail box. Why is

It is because fetchmail is flooding the smtp port with connections and
exim stops delivering mail when this happens. I have put the following
at the end of my fetchmailrc, it forces exim it empty the que

Hamm - Slink PROBLEMS

1999-02-28 Thread wax_man
I am having problems upgrading my new box from hamm to slink. I have installed
apt for hamm. I did changed my /etc/apt/sources.list file to point to
ftp://ftp.us.debia.org/frozen main contrib non-free. I then did an
apt-get update followed by an apt-get dist-upgrade. While trying to
d/l, apt gave me the following errors:

I had that problem this afternoon while updating my potato system. Try
ftp.debian.org instead. It has all
of those packages. Hopefully, the ftp.us.debian.org maintainer is reading this
message.

You can only have one line uncommented for (main contrib non-free)
I have 4 or 5 there just in case a site is not up or is busy and then
I try another.

So usr either of the slink main lines and then the non-US and you will
have everything. Syntax is important!

It may be a bug, but I am not sure. You can fix it by using the http port.

That is, change your sources.list to

http://ftp.us.debian.org...

hope it helps...

Menus locales en Hamm/Slink

1998-12-14 Thread Jordi Roman Mejias

HAMM-SLINK Upgrade Howto

1998-12-01 Thread Ivan E. Moore II
For those of you interested I have written a small howto document on upgrading
to SLINK from HAMM. I still have some minor changes to make to it but it is
still usuable. The only thing I am missing is the exact name of one
package...but the system will tell you what that is anyways so it's no big deal.

Hope this helps someone.

[HELP:]howto hamm-slink + dpkg problems

1998-10-02 Thread Bruno Boettcher
hello,

i didn't find any README in the slink directory, so how does the upgrade work
(and the maintenance...) do i simply install the packages of the slink
directory?

In fact i would like to have packages like gnome easily installed and
maintained through dselect... and that seems possible only upgrading to
slink...

second problem: my system seems to have problems with dpkg, i couldn't get it
install the gmp package, no way i corresponded with the package mantainer
but after some initial guesses, didn't hear anymore from him :(

result are some packages that are set as broken
further when trying to retrieve non-US packages, despite the fact that the
Package file is fetched at the right location, when trying to download the path
used by dselect is worng:
Checking for Packages file...
/pub/mirror/non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US/hamm/binary-i386/Packages.gz
but:
Connecting to ftp.inka.de...
Login as anonymous...
Setting transfer mode to binary...

getting: dists/stable/non-US/binary-i386/pgp-us_2.6.3a-4.deb (283332)

Install apt. And set it up.
You can then install packages from slink by:

apt-get install gnome

It will automatically fulfill the necessary dependencies.

Your system still remains hamm (in most places).

Aplixware and debian hamm/slink

1998-08-18 Thread Stephen J. Carpenter
I have been thinking of getting some sort of Office Suite for
my own use at home...and have an early version of StarOffice 4 and
have had mixed sucess with it (ok little to no success but...I could
play with it more too...)

Anyway...
Has anyone here tried Applixware from RedHat? I understand its probably
RPM'd et al...but with alien I could make it a tgz or a deb...
I am runnign a hamm/slink system currently. I don't want to pay the
$$ if it doesn't offer any signifigant advantages (tho if it does I am
happy to buy a copy...afterall RedHat is an important COmpany in the
Linux world...and im happy to see them make money)

Using 2.1.x kernels with hamm/slink

1998-08-04 Thread Bob Nielsen
I have a mixed hamm/slink system which works fine with 2.0.35. I have
tried running 2.1.112 and 2.1.114 and can't get pppd to start. Typing (as
root) '/etc/init.d/ppp start' doesn't give any error message, but it
doesn't run. Is there something different required for these newer
kernels?

Read the Documentation/Changes file in the 2.1.114 source. Make sure you
have upgraded everything. Also, turn on full debugging in your pppd
options file(man pppd). If all else fails, recompile pppd 2.3.5 against
2.1.114 headers.
