Lineak is one of many solutions. If you're using sid or using the KDE
backports for woody, there is better support for multimedia support.

lineakd, hotkeys, acme and a bunch of others are good for getting the
multimedia keys working under X, it won't get them working in the
terminal and I am not sure if its possible. The function keys should
also work in the terminal as they should be standard keys unless
microsoft did something really unconventional (when setting up the
keyboard for the console I believe that there is an option for a
microsoft natural keyboard, but also I don't think it will give you the
multimedia keys).

Another way in X which is more work and won't give you the osd, but
will save you running a daemon in the background is to configure
xmodmap.

Assuming that we're both thinking of the same keyboard, there is a
'function lock' key right next to F12. You have to turn it ON in order
for the function keys to work as function keys.

I'm not sure what else you want to get working? The multimedia buttons?
This is the keyboard that I use at work and I have had no problems at
all with it in text terminals or in X. The only thing that I don't have
access to in a tty is the Play/Pause, etc, buttons on the top of the
keyboard. Everything else works just fine.

Dear Debian users/developers,

I am uncertain about the best means to get my Microsoft Natural
Multimedia Keyboard working with Debian.

I also need the Microsoft Natural Multimedia Keyboard to work
with the terminals tty1, tty2, tty3 etc when I am not using X.

At the moment I don't even have access to the function keys
so I am restricted to one virtual terminal when I am not using X.

I checked here:

http://lists.debian.org/debian-x/2003/06/msg00307.html

... but noticed that the file formats in the files referred to are
a little bit different to what is now on my system.

Lineakd

Is lineakd (http://lineak.sourceforge.net/index.php?nav=docs)
the solution? Is it necessary to have another daemon running
in order to use a different kind of keyboard?

TIA

Usb multimedia keyboard not working

2004-05-03 Thread Rex Chan
Hi guys,

I got myself a usb keyboard today, but i'm having problems with getting
it working.

I have HID module loaded, keybdev, and it appears to be detected
sucessfully, ie dmesg | grep USB ->
input: USB HID v1.10 Device [USB MULTIMEDIA KEYBOARD] on
usb2:2.1
I get error messages like:
usb_control/bulk_msg: timeout
usb.c: USB disconnect on device 00:10.0-1 address 2
hub.c: new USB device 00:10.0-1, assigned address 3
hub.c: USB device not accepting new address=3 (errno=-110)
hub.c: new USB device 00:10.0-1, assigned address 4
hub.c: USB device not accepting new address=4 (errno=-110)
and a few more wondeful:
usb_control/bulk_msg: timeout
after each disconnect...

Anybody know where to find out what this means?

Is it possible to download more keyboard definition files from somewhere

Thanks.

Look into hotkeyd and acme. Acme is the better of the two, but it is a

I dont think thats possible. Hotkeys needs X to do its stuff.

I happen to like lineak a bit better for daemoning hotkeys.

Has anyone an hotkeys daemon for non-X console though?

multimedia keyboard

2003-01-31 Thread Bob Paige
I have one of those 'multimedia' keyboards with extra buttons to control
your CD player, volume, launch applications, etc.

Using xmodmap I have successfully mapped the special keys to XFree86 events:
/usr/X11R6/bin/xmodmap -e "keycode 176 = XF86AudioRaiseVolume"
/usr/X11R6/bin/xmodmap -e "keycode 174 = XF86AudioLowerVolume"
/usr/X11R6/bin/xmodmap -e "keycode 164 = XF86AudioStop"
/usr/X11R6/bin/xmodmap -e "keycode 162 = XF86AudioPlay"
/usr/X11R6/bin/xmodmap -e "keycode 229 = XF86Search"
/usr/X11R6/bin/xmodmap -e "keycode 223 = XF86Standby"
/usr/X11R6/bin/xmodmap -e "keycode 160 = XF86AudioMute"
/usr/X11R6/bin/xmodmap -e "keycode 153 = XF86AudioNext"
/usr/X11R6/bin/xmodmap -e "keycode 144 = XF86AudioPrev"
/usr/X11R6/bin/xmodmap -e "keycode 236 = XF86Mail"
/usr/X11R6/bin/xmodmap -e "keycode 178 = XF86HomePage"

Then I setup keyboard shortcuts under sawfish in the Gnome Control Center.

The problem is that they don't always work! For example, if I have no
windows open, they don't work. If I open an xterm, they work. If I'm
using Mozilla, they work. If I'm doing Java development in Eclipse, they
don't work.

It seems fairly application-specific, but I expected them to work all
the time. Is this possible?

with X 4.x you probably don't even need xmodmap, just use the
following settings in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Logitech Cordless iTouch"
Driver "keyboard"
Option "CoreKeyboard"
Option "XkbRules" "xfree86"
# erik: default commented out: Option "XkbModel"
"pc104"
Option "XkbModel" "logicordless"
Option "XkbLayout" "us"
EndSection

depending on exact version of logitech keyboard you might need
different XkbModel (or you might still need xmodmap), /etc/X11/xkb files
for more info (it looks like rules/xfree86 is the most interesting one,
also check symbols/inet)

I have some Logitech multimedia keyboard and works well with xmms.
1) find the keycodes for the new keys
2) make your home xmodmap file (mine is bellow)
3) xmodmap the file
4) bind the new keys. I use sawfish, but it should works with others WM

I've got a Microsoft Natural Pro with "internet keys" (back, foward,
stop, refresh, plus all the multimedia stuff and whatnot). I wrote an
xkeycaps keyboard definition for this keyboard, which makes it very easy
to assign keysyms to those keys. Then it becomes a question of
configuring individual apps to do something useful with those keys. I
find it useful to hit the 'Sleep' button on my keyboard and have it
activate xlock, for example.

If you want my xkeycaps patch, it is at
http://locust.lcs.mit.edu/~noahm/xkeycaps/

If it were me I would not, I found my favorite keyboard a few years
ago, its made by acer:
http://www.eacer.com/erkey.html

i have big hands and its excellent for that, its not good for
people with small hands(or maybe normal hands too)

anyways, as for the keys, yes you should be able to get them to
work in X, by re mapping them to do things, just like other keys.
as far as if they work with the applications I think your best
off testing the apps with keys like F8 and F9 for volume control,
if you can get an app to respond to it then you can probably re
program the keymaps to get the volume keys on the multimedia keyboard
to work.

but by default the keys will not be functional. I've never looked
into re mapping keys so i don't know how to do it, but have
seen it discussed a lot
