problem with cfdisk
Hi all, I currently try to install Debian 2.1. I have problems to configure my hard disk drive properly. With the help of cfdisk 0.8, I created a partition table with this shape: nameflags partition type file system size hda1bootprimary Win95 FAT32 3498 MB hda5logical Linux Swap 125 MB hda6bootlogical Linux 4408 MB When I saved this configuration, I recieved this error message: writing partition table... no primary partition is bootable The DOS-MBR can'tboot from it. Change bootability of current pariution So far the message. Well, at this moment, the cursor is at hda6 and this device is marked as bootable. Can you please tell me, what I did wrong here? With kind regards Christian

Christian Mathes wrote: Hi all, I currently try to install Debian 2.1. I have problems to configure my hard disk drive properly. Just as friendly assistance in your English usage -and I see that your English is quite good- the gerund form, in this case, configuring, is more often used as the verbal noun denoting an action, than the infinite form, which is opposite, as I understand from my studies in German and Spanish, to most other European languages. English is pathological in this respect, as in many others. I wish to abandon it, but I can't seem to get along with out it at this time. With the help of cfdisk 0.8, I created a partition table with this shape: name flags partition type file system size hda1 bootprimary Win95 FAT32 3498 MB -- hda5 logical Linux Swap 125 MB + hda6 bootlogical Linux 4408 MB +---which one? -- When I saved this configuration, I recieved this error message: writing partition table... no primary partition is bootable The DOS-MBR can'tboot from it. Change bootability of current pariution So far the message. Well, at this moment, the cursor is at hda6 and this device is marked as bootable. Can you please tell me, what I did wrong here? My guess is that the problem is having two partition marked as bootable.
Problem with cfdisk - need help!
i am trying to install debian linux. i got the distribution from the 'Debian GNU/Linux Guide to Installation and Usage' book. i followed the instructions using FIPS to partition my hard drive. the drive is a 25 GB drive. the partitioning of DOS partitions seems to have worked okay. i am running windows 98 second edition, and the operating system recognizes the smaller disk partition after running FIPS. FIPS seems to have written the partition table okay because i can run FIPS -t and it works fine. when i run linux cfdisk, i go to partition the hard drive to create linux partitions, and i get the following message: FATAL ERROR: Bad primary partition Press any key to exit fdisk i can 'view partitions' with cfdisk. it shows me that there are 2 FAT32 partitions on my hard disk. so, what's up with this?? any help would be greatly appreciated. -- Duggan Dieterlyvoice: (970) 898-7906 Software Design Engr fax: (970) 898-3684 Hewlett-Packard Co.

Could you send us the entire output? I'd say print the allocation table from dos, but it won't recognize the output. Specifically, give us the start/stop information, and the file system types or numbers. also, what size of disk is it? And fwiw, here's mine: cfdisk 0.8l Disk Drive: /dev/hda Heads: 64 Sectors per Track: 63 Cylinders: 525 NameFlags Part Type FS Type [Label]Size (MB) -- hda1BootPrimary DOS FAT16 (big) [ ] 338.63 hda2Primary Linux Swap 127.97 hda3Primary Linux ext2 567.00 [Bootable] [ Delete ] [ Help ] [Maximize] [ Print ] [ Quit ] [ Type ] [ Units ] [ Write ]

Try use x(pert) function - c(ylinder) to set the correct number, then fdisk has no problem handling big HD. But I have tried it up to 13GB only. Problem with cfdisk
Someone here is having a problem with the dos side of his machine... He installed Debian 1.3.1r6. He has a computer with two IDE disks. One is Windows (/dev/hdb), the other is Debian (/dev/hda). At installation time he didn't touch the second this, and for some reason or other, he had to pull the plug on the Debian disk (he nedeed desperatedly a file on the Windows side, and he didn't know about mount -t vfat ...) He expected nothig to happen, but he got 1FA: on boot (remember, the Debian disk was not plugged). He said 1, and it started to load, but nothing happened. Plugging back the Debian disk, he wrote a lilo.conf, lilo agreed with it, and when he got to the prompt LILO boot: he wrote win, and lilo said Loading win... and nothing. He tried booting with a dos disk, and did FDISK /MBR, but DOS doesn't see the disk (no matter if it's set as primary or secondary or the other disks is plugged or not) dos's fdisk does not see the partition. cfdisk /dev/hdb sees the partition, but it writes DOS FAT16 (big) [^D9] (I know, ^D9 is the disk label... it's funny) mount cann't mount the partition. It gives an error about an invalid super block, or something like that (he is getting anxious, and he's starting not to read what's on the screen... I bet many of you know the tune, and I can't get to his computer right now) If you can reply to me (or the list) and also cc [EMAIL PROTECTED] that'd be most appreciated.
