Joe, I don't know if this is your problem based on your
log snippet, but, running "fc-cache -f" as root may fix
up your problem. You should do this whenever X is
updated.

Yes, I described this in an earlier post where I tailed 
/var/log/XFree86.1.log.




Oh. I didn't see the earlier post.

I suffer from slow gnome startup, ever since I de-installed the default 
metacity window manager and tried running anything else. Never got round 
to sorting it out. I avoid exiting my desktop as much as possible as a 
result :(

Yes, I described this in an earlier post where I tailed 
/var/log/XFree86.1.log.

for a very long time top reports that XFree86 is consuming over 90% of cpu

running:

   tail -f /var/log/XFree86.1.log
