I need to re-install sarge because I have had to install practically every app that I use from source. The .deb's were missing important configure options that I could not do without and I was unable to figure out how to create my own. Another reason I'd rather do a new install is that I need a working system while I am building the new one. Besides, I will be able to refer to my current system for the customization of the new one. I have heard rumors that etch will soon become stable. Would any one know when this is likely to happen? Or is it already frozen and I could start my reinstall this coming week-end without having to do it all over again when it becomes stable? Thanks cga Note: This is a laptop with a pcmcia NIC. Back in April, I spent over two months trying to install etch but I was never able to finish the install. The etch installer just did not recognize the NIC .. I was never able to bring up a network connection .. as a result I ended up with an etch install that I could not finalize. Since the stable etch installer probably won't work any better with this laptop .. and since the sarge installer did work .. I was thinking the above might be the best solution. I don't know if there is a recommended procedure, but if there was one my guess would be to use a net-install cd and install from a mirror. Once installed you should not have to re-install... ever. I have been using Etch since 00.org hit v. 2.0, a year or so, while updating when reading the users list indicated it was safe, for my skill level to upgrade. The laptop pcmcia card issue is a trial an error issue, if Etch doesn't support it, use sarge and do a minimal install, change your sources list to Etch and do a full install. What a genius this guy is I here you say. A doubling of storage is what you would expect. My point is that whereas the Sarge 3.1 r3 release contains 15 CDs, Etch comprises 21 CDs.. Or 3 DVDs. But of course these are 3 single layer 4.4 GB DVDs. Once Etch comes out and everyones starts to work on Lenny, then maybe it could get to thirty CDs or 4 or 5 DVDs. Once it gets to that size would dual layered DVD iso images be considered to be parked in the repositories? *maybe*. We had some of this discussion before sarge released, when there was a chance that we might make sarge fit on a single DL DVD. See the debian-cd mailing list archives if you'd like to know more... :-) Part of this discussion concerned the cost of DL media vs single layer. At the time DL was about $8/disk while compared to maybe $1.00/disk for SL, not a good value, imho. He should be able to connect to my LAN, which has large NFS-accessible storage. What he wants to do is make a complete backup of his hard disk (possibly partition by partition) before he does anything to install any linux, makes any real use of windows, and especially before he connects to the net using Windows. He's not stupid. There is a Windows rescue partition on the disk, but we're not naive enough to believe that it will be unaffected by real trouble either. My question is: what recommendations do you have as to appropriate tools for this? Presumably some kind of Linux live CD, but what flavour, and what software from the live CD. We also have to be able to restore from this backup when the entire machine is hosed, of course. If necessary, I can disconnect the entire LAN from the wider net while we make this backup. There is 45G of free space on the hard disk, and the hard drive is said to be 60G, whatever that means. This suggests there is of the order of 15G if actual information, split bwtween Windows and the rescue partition. I am not sure what the significance is of a rescue partition. What i have found on the 3 laptops I bought, one could do a fresh install, repartitioning and creating a second partition. One just had image restore disks that could only restore to the original equipment, original configuration So it depends on what restore media you get. My best scenario was an oem like restore disk , you can do fresh installs if you want. I used 'ntfsresize' to shrink the Windows partition to 6 gb. I then had ~14 gb to install Linux. I originally built the system with one SCSI drive and later added the two others. This worked great for me! But here's my problem. I have heard that by adding a IDE drive into the system I will no longer be able to boot off of my SCSI drive. Is that true? I guess there is some BIOS issue with that. To add to the complexity of this, the drive has about 50 GB of data that I want to keep... Oh, and it is formatted NTFS (Windows 2000). Can I add this IDE drive 'as is' without re-formatting it? I seem to remember seeing that I could mount a NTFS file system somewhere. If you need more information, no problem. Thanks so much, Michael Drives are mounted from entries in '/etc/fstab'. If you don't add an entry before booting with the new drive nothing will happen to the drive when you first boot. The problem is ntfs is not a well supported file system for read/writes from Linux. I would back up the data somewhere, reformat the disk then restore the data to the hd. As far as booting IDE or SCSi there are differences in bios's. Some offer a choice between IDE or SCSI and some will boot the master drive on the primary IDE controller no matter what. You can test your box, you can always mount the IDE drive as a slave to avoid the issue. -- Greg Madden -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? On a previous install of Debian, I was unable to get X to start, though I had a fully functional internet connection that I used to d/l Debian. Decided to reinstall - this time, got X to run, but, ironically, my internet is down. Damn, are computer's fickle? LOL. I installed the 'ppp' module into my kernel like I normally do in the Debian install. No joy. Tried removing that module. No joy. Added just 'ppp_deflate'. Nope. Tried 'ppp' and 'ppp_deflate' together. Nada. I ran 'pppoeconfig' (or is it just 'pppconfig'? it's the 'ADSL/PPPOE' Configurator in the Debian Menu) - it won't run on the initial try, and prompts me to run 'modconf'. After selecting and removing/installing one of the modules (apparently, it just wants a change, and it doesn't care what), 'modconf' dumps me back into 'pppoeconfig' - which tells me that it now detects my Ethernet Card, and then tries to auto-config everything. That's when it tells me no - it can't detect the setup from the 'provider' - I'm assuming that's the router. It also says that its possible that other processes are using the interface 'eth0' - my ethernet card. AFAIK you do not setup PPPOE on Debian, the router does the PPPOE stuff with your ISP. All you need to do is set up you nic card, (hopefully) use dhcp to get an address from the router. That's it. Next is my soundcard - a Soundblaster 128PCI - aka: ES1371. Everytime I start up KDE, it brings up a dialogue box that I used to get with Mandrake - 'do not have permissions to device '/dev/dsp''. I tried changing the permissions on it, but it didn't work. I never did fix the problem - just installed SuSE on top of it. LOL - I'm lazy. But, I like Debian too much to just quit at it. That's why I'm asking you guys. Any ideas for either of these two problems? Thanks a lot. Re: Question about SCSI IMMED flag in cdrecord!
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 On Friday 01 August 2003 04:36 pm, Rthoreau wrote: Hi fellow Debian users. I have been pulling my hair out the last three days because every time I tried to burn an ISO in cdrecord it locked my system solid. Had to do a hard reset. After pouring over the Man page, searched the net I solved my problem. I wasn't using the -immed flag when burning with cdrecord, which for some reason would use all the system bus, therefore lock up the computer solid. According to the cdrecord man page: This can be useful on broken systems with ATAPI harddisk and CD/DVD writer on the same bus or with SCSI systems that don't use disconnect/reconnect. These systems will freeze while blanking or fixating a CD/DVD or while a DVD writer is filling up a session to the minimum amount (approx. 800 MB). snip A correct solution would be to set up a correct cabling but there seem to be notebooks around that have been set up the wrong way by the manufacturer. As it is impossible to fix this problem in notebooks, the -immed option has been added. Since I built this system from scratch I know that I used the proper cables. I am also using an SMP system so system resources like cpu cycles should not be a problem. I do have cdrw, dvd on the same IDE channel. This is a little unnerving because I thought I had a good system. But according to the page I have a broken system, or the wrong cables. I also use cdrdao to burn bin/cue files and I have never had this problem. Could this be a coding problem in Cdrecord, and they using the -immed flag is a way out of the problem? Or is it like they say a bus problem? I am using a current version out of unstable seems to be a problem with all versions though. If I do change motherboards, or my cabling will this solve my problem? Or do I have to wait until a future bus is implemented? Have any of you played arround with cabling, and motherboads to solve this problem? Rthoreau I think what the cdrecord info means is do not put a hard drive Cd/burner on the same cable. In some notebooks there are only one IDE controller so this happens, though I haven't actually seen a noebook configure this way. AFAIk having a cd reader cd-recorder on the same bus and copying from one burning to the other can cause the issue you mention. If this is the case, DMA or scsi emulation need to be used. - -- Greg Madden Debian GNU/Linux -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.2.2 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQE/LB0zk7rtxKWZzGsRAhicAJ43CifUpx7gf1YB0Gxwbt1NLIAdlQCbBlsu ayWnqxAr+zFIhrUwm5TXi9k= =3MYo -END PGP SIGNATURE- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. debmirror ?
I use debmirror to maintain a i386 local mirror. This has worked fine using hosts (-h) like 'archive.progeny.com'. I recently discovered 'netselect' and located a mirror I would like to try, 'ftp-mirror.internap.com'. Unfortunately the debmirror script fails: clos:/home/pabi# debmirror -a i386 -h ftp-mirror.internap.com -d woody -d testing -d unstable /mnt/pub/mirror/debian -p --getcontents This is the error meaasage: cwd to /debian failed at /usr/bin/debmirror line 337. releasing 1 pending lock... at /usr/lib/perl5/LockFile/Simple.pm line 182. This is line 337: $ftp-cwd($remoteroot) or die cwd to $remoteroot failed; The directory structure is a little different on the internap.com server, they use ~/pub/debian, other mirrors I have tried have ~/debian. I don't know if this is relevant though. TIA -- Greg Madden -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: VMWare package
On Monday 17 February 2003 06:18 pm, Kent West wrote: Greg Norris wrote: 1) The kernel headers need to *exactly* match your running kernel. If your using a distribution kernel, there should be a matching kernel-headers-* package that you can install. If you compile your own, be sure to hang onto the headers after building. The easiest way to do this is to use make-kpkg, and have it generate a kernel-headers package for you. Having just done this today, I'll point out that when you install the kernel-headers, it creates several directories under /usr/src, like: kernel-header-2.4.20-386 and kernel-header-2.4.20-586 and etc. You'll need to point the vmware-config.pl script to the correct directory, but you'll have to dive one level deeper, into include I believe, when the script asks for the path. Kent On a recent install of Vmware the config script suggested the following path to the 'include' dir. I am not sure if this means you don't need a headers package though. Can any tell me how to copy them both onto hard disk and combine them into a single 3.0r1 repository that apt can use. I have scanned the docks but cannot find a description - if the answer is a RTFM, could someone point me to the correct fine manual :-) Steve I don't know about an automated way to combine the two. I looked at the DVD structure and my local mirror structure. It seem that all you need is the 'dists' 'pool' directories copied from the DVD, same for the uppdate cd. Use 'mount -o loop *.iso' in order to do the copy. If you use a 'file' entry in your sources list you will have seperate entries for whatever location you copy the directories to. Not what I would call an elegant Debian tools type solution but should work. Jigdo may be worth a look a for reconstructing a new DVD from the two new sources . You can always use a loop device for mounting the DVD, then use the file location in your sources.list. -- Greg Madden -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Never heard of or used Ogle before and have never played a DVD ever before(boycotting them myself). nate I am not sure if this is for OGLE or Xine it has ben awhile since I set either up . It might be it is looking for a mount point dvd.
