2002-08-14 Thread sen_ml
The following was extracted from communication w/ the author of
Authen::OPIE (Eric Estabrooks):

...

I'm looking for licensing information, but all I've been able to come
 up w/ is:

This module comes with no warranty either expressed or implied. I
am not responsible for any damages that may result from the use of
this module, including but not limited to monetary loss, mental
   distress, or general mayhem

Eric Estabrooks, [EMAIL PROTECTED], Copyright 2000,2001

from the OPIE.pm file. Is there anything else?

I'd like to ask the Debian folks to make a Debian package of the
module, but I'm wondering whether the current license works for them.

If the current license doesn't work for them, would you be willing to
license the code under something that does? For a full description
 and some examples, please see:

   http://www.debian.org/social_contract

Thanks for your time and attention.

With regards to debian it can be considered under the Artistic license.
They can use it in whatever manner they desire without worrying about
my copyright. You also need to check the licensing of the opie library
itself since this module uses it.

Bug#78855: experiences with your packages

I'm installing your packages from ftp://oss.gonicus.de/pub/debian, and
 like to report my experiences.

First, I could not compile intermezzo-module on woody, it seems to use
a newer syntax for dpkg-gencontrol, since it compiles on sarge.

 The errors on woody:

 - debstd processing for GNU/Linux --
 -- Installing Documentation
-- Looking for manpages in sourcepackage

 ** Package intermezzo-module
-- Checking for executable binaries in package
No executables or libraries in the package!
 -- Checking Symlinks
dpkg-gencontrol: error: per-package paragraph 2 in control info file
 is missing Package line

Sorry for the german messages, but these files need to be overwritten,
it seems. Is that really needed?

No. Either they should be excluded or diverted by postinst. The packages
are not meant to be production stuff, just as a base for someone who
wants to start through doing real packaging ;-) They are in a rough shape -
I know.

There's another problem: the apache modules directory is not set
correctly at compile time. If there's some more feedback, I'm going
to fix all these issues at the weekend and upload an updated version.

The module intermezzo.o is stored in
 /lib/modules/2.4.19/kernel/fs/intermezzo/intermezzo.o, which will
overwrite a module built from the kernel sources. Hm, shouldn't you
put the kernel-release in the package name, just like other kernel
 modules?

I'll have a closer look in how to handle this. Hints are welcome, since
I'm currently short on time and no debian kernel maintainer.

And finally, there is no documentation, no manpages in the packages.
So, setting something workable up is non-trivial. Falling back to the
source gives me some documentation, these files should be included in
the packages. And no I'll try to get something working...

So do I. In fact there is no documentation on all this intermezzo stuff. For
some
binaries I don't know what they do, or what their options mean. But I got it
running somehow - not ready for production yet - I guess.

So long,

Turn your Linux box into a complete audio and video production

related to the system.

At Heroine Virtual, every supporting library and utility is somehow
related to Cinelerra; therefore, everything is distributed in one
huge package. The huge package contains the latest versions of

ERC is a fantastic irc client for emacsen. It doesn't need much work,
and upstream is a great fellow. Indeed, I would like to ask Mario to
take over erc from me, since he is the most suitable person, in my
opinion. He and Benjamin could co-maintain it, and that would rock.

wily was orphaned from Debian quite a long time ago. I'm going to
adopt it. wily is a mouse-oriented, text-based working environment
for programmers. It lets you interact with your files, directories and
other programs through mouse and keyboard operations on plain text.

It needs two supporting packages which I shall also be packaging --
9fonts 9libs. There will also be a supplemental package wily-tools
which includes some useful tools for wily. wily is distributed
under the Artistic licence. You can get the current source from
ftp://www.cs.yorku.ca/pub/wily/src and the current website is at
http://www.cs.yorku.ca/~oz/wily/ .

9term, 9wm and sam are related packages. I do not intend to package
any of these at this time.

Bug#156667: RFA: fetchmail

2002-08-14 Thread Henrique de Moraes Holschuh
Package: wnpp
Version: N/A; reported 2002-08-14
Severity: normal

I am quite fed up of fetchmail, and thus not giving it the attention it
requires. I am willing to orphan it, along with fetchmail-ssl... if someone
steps up to take care of it (after all, I do use it :P ).

Upstream is usually cooperative and easy to work with (Eric Raymond/ESR). He
does accept patches that break the hell out of fetchmail from time to time,
though.

The code is not too buggy, but it is nearly-unmaintaneable C (fetchmail) and
very maintaneable but quite large python (fetchmailconf). IMHO (and in
upstream's) fetchmail actually needs to be rewritten from scratch in
something else than C.

Do not apply for adopting this package unless you have a lot of patience and
time to deal with the users and unexpected breakages. C knowledge is
required. You will have to deal with signal handling hell too, so be warned.

Whomever takes fetchmail, will also take fetchmail-ssl. This is
non-negotiable: both packages come from the same source package (and should
probably be merged into a single one now that sarge is open, and
fetchmail-ssl is in main)...

Bug#156673: ITP: aspell-nl -- Dutch wordlists for aspell

Description : Dutch dictionary and language support for aspell

This package provides a dutch dictionary and a language file for use with the
aspell spelling checker.
The word list has been compiled from a number of sources:
   1. The list used in the aspell-nl-0.1.rpm package. The main reason I
decided to build the present package is that I could not find a
tarball distribution of this rpm and that some ``exceptions'' from
the official lists seemed to be missing.
   2. The lists in the official announcement (1996) about spelling changes.
   3. The list by Piet Tutelaers available on http://www.ntg.nl/spell-nl-v5b/.
The full word list (approx. 222K words) is available as a text file dutch.words
in the distribution. The language definition is in the file dutch.dat.

The license is a bit unclear. I will contact upstream about this.

Description : ZINF audio player (supercedes FreeAmp)

The Zinf audio player is a simple, but powerful audio player for
Linux and Win32. It supports MP3, Ogg/Vorbis, WAV and Audio CD
playback, with a powerful music browser, theme support and a
 download manager.

It is based on the FreeA*p audio player which was developed by
 EMusic.com -- however, EMusic.com recently discontinued the
 FreeA*p project.

I've been following the zinf-devel group, and 2.2.0 is not ready
yet. Plus, they are having issues with the next version of zinf. I
don't think we should put it in Debian, especially if you plan to
replace our FreeAmp package.

Absolutely. irssi-gtk is deprecated, upstream doesn't recommend to use it
anymore. xirssi is supposed to replace irssi-gtk.

Bug#156407: ITP: free-java-sdk -- Complete Java SDK environment consising of free Java tools

2002-08-14 Thread Grzegorz Prokopski
  - it's upstream is really interested in having robust and widely
used
JVM [2], not only another research tool for students
  - it is written in pure C, should be very easily portable to other
architectures (currently it supports x86, not sure about alpha,
but in
few months sparc support should be added)
kaffe and gcj are already heavily ported. kaffe has been ported to
several
cell phones, and other embeddable devices.

So I took some time to check what that easily portable means in
practise - and started porting this JVM to alpha.

It was my first time I was doing a port and I never wrote in alpha's
assembler, so it took very long - about 24 hours and resulted (of
mostly learning) in small diff (around 100 lines, but there was some
code reorganizing in it too, so real diff was around 25 lines!)

blinkB25 lines to port JVM to new architecture/B/blink

Anyway - now SableVM JVM supports ia32 and alpha.
Official 1.0.2 release will be made soon.

More arches will come.

Regards

Grzegorz B. Prokopski

PS: If you wanna help - drop a mail to
mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
or even to me (but I am offline till monday)

PSS: The port wouldn't be possible w/o help of upstream author,
Etienne M. Gagnon and people from debian-alpha ml. Thanks!
