Bug#168903: ITP: midge -- A text to midi translator

2002-11-13 Thread Mario Lang
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: midge
  Version : 0.2.33
  Upstream Author : [EMAIL PROTECTED]
* URL : http://www.dmriley.demon.co.uk/code/midge/
* License : GPL
Description : A text to midi translator

Midge is a text to midi and vice-versa translator
written in Perl. It's source language is
documented, and some examples are included.

Upstream likes being packaged, already did
unofficial debs himself. I'll probably need to package
the perl MIDI module first, depending on how large
it actually is.

Why this stuff has to be packaged in a separate package?

I mean, packages are supposed to include man pages of binaries they
ship, readme files and so on

Thanks for your work,
Cheers.

Bug#152307: ITP: libdbi-ruby -- Database Independent Interface for Ruby

2002-11-13 Thread Pablo Lorenzzoni
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hello!

Sorry, I've run out of time for this packaging. I was thinking of finishing
it by january (after my life goes back to normal), but if you'd like you can
take over the package right now.

It's not a difficult task, the main problem is to get the other ruby packages
DBI depends on. Like Ruby/ODBC, Ruby/Oracle, Ruby/SQLite, Ruby/SQLRelay,
Ruby/Interbase, Ruby/DB2 and Ruby/mSQL. They're not packaged yet, but they're
available from RAA. Maybe you should group other 2-3 devels to package the
whole thing... I don't know.

Actually, I'm not :-|

I've just cleaned up about two dozen merged wnpp bugs, I didn't cc: the
individual bug numbers because the list was so long.
I closed those which did not have any added information in the duplicate
reports, as they only sit there making the wnpp bug list even longer and
harder to read.

Filip,

It's Ok if you don't feel like packaging something. Just retitle the bug
instead of ITP (Intend To Package) to it's original RFP (Request For
Packaging) so that if someone else is interested, they can take over and
do it.

My bug requesting a gnome-vim debian package is not solved, so the bug
should not be closed. You never even retitled the bug to an ITP, so why
close it??

Description : Gnome-vim is a Bonobo component which embeds VIM and
implements (part of) the same interface as the
GtkHTML component.

[From the web site]

Gnome-vim is a Bonobo component which embeds VIM and implements (part
of) the same interface as the GtkHTML component. This makes it possible
to use VIM in Evolution, instead of the default HTML editor.

How does it work?

Gnome-vim uses the zvt widget (terminal), and runs a copy of vim inside
of that. It implements many of the methods in the GtkHTML interface by
sending keystrokes to the embedded vim, to cause it to load and save
files, jump to specific parts of the document, etc. Yes, it's a hack. :)

Does it work?

Gnome-vim doesn't yet implement the full interface; many of the methods
are no-ops. However, I've implemented enough that it works quite well
with Evolution, and I use it daily. I haven't implemented the
Bonobo::PersistFile yet, so you can't do File-Save or File-Save as
from the composer menu and have it work. Sending messages, replying,
forwarding, using signatures, saving as drafts and then re-editing, etc.
all work.

I haven't tested gnome-vim with programs other than Evolution, because
I'm not aware of other programs which make use of the GtkHTML component.

[I'd love to see this in Debian if it ever gets working.]

 We explained that there already.

You could at least give a summary of that reasons.
The reason why ITP are CCed to debian-devel is that this is the place
where a discussion can take place. Even if you already had such a
conversation that did not forbid a discussion here.

This package is necessary for midge (see #168903).

Unfortunately, the module source does not
include any license. So this is basicly
undistributable right now. I've contacted upstream (it's two
years since last release, I really hope he is still alive),

finished, and midge too, but the license issue
is holding both uploads back now.

I will be packaging ESP Ghostscript. ESP Ghostscript is an up-to-date
GNU Ghostscript distribution including bug fixes, new drivers from the
GIMP-print and CUPS projects, and additional support for CUPS.

This is licensed under the GPL and is available at:

I'm coordinating this work with Torsten Landschoff, the current maintainer
of the gs, and gs-aladdin packages.

The point of the template is to actually fill-in the various fields. :-)

Description : libEMF is a C/C++ library which provides a drawing

Don't repeat the package name in the brief description. Just A C/C++

It depends on spectrum-roms and must therefore go in contrib.

We had a discussion abour ZX ROMS some time ago.
Amstrad allows the ROMs i(at least the Spectrum ones) to
be freely used in emulators, therefore there is no need
for this to go to contrib.

If amstrad allows them to be freely used, (only) then they are
 non-free.

If Amstrad includes source code, and allows modification and
redistribution etc, and all the other things we ask for in the DFSG,
 only then are they free.

Amstrad allows modification and redistribution. There is no source code,
of course (there probably never was one)

If they are non-free, then xfuse must be contrib..

There are also replacement ROMs available, some of them may be free
(I have no further knowledge about them, though)

Hi, Andrew.

What do you think to work on RazorBack and us in the Snare? I saw that Filip
Van Raemdonck (Is he your advocate?) closed the ITP from Gleydson Mazioli, my
partner in this project, and I believe that your could wait a little bit more.

Why not just calling it python-gnupg ? This would be more adequate
regarding other python packages, imho.

Because its name is GnuPGInterface. There are other Python modules with
names like that, so I think it would be more confusing to do that.

Bug#160004: Regarding your Debian ITPs to Snare

2002-11-13 Thread Andrew Lau
Dear Michelle,
The real problem at the moment is that NONE of us can package
SNARE in its current state. That's what I was saying in the last
email. I've been talking about this with Leigh Purdie (upstream) on a
weekly basis.
SNARE can no longer work with 2.4.18+ kernels because they've
internalised the sys_call_table facility, meaning that external
modules can no longer hook into the kernel's system calls to provide
C2 auditing. If it wasn't for this, I would have released a package
ages ago! I wasn't exactly counting on someone else filing an ITP on
the meantime, but I'll be happy to cooperate with you guys on SNARE
and other InterSect tools in future.
So pretty much, we'll all have to wait for InterSect with Alan
Cox and the Red Hat kernel team to get some patches accepted into the
kernel or made publicly available before any of us can get SNARE
packaged. I'll keep you up to date if anymore news comes to hand.

Yours sincerely,
Andrew Netsnipe Lau

Bug#163270: phoenix prerelease packages

2002-11-13 Thread Eric Dorland
I've put up a prerelease package for phoenix. They are apt-gettable:

deb http://people.debian.org/~eric/debian/i386 ./

It is very preliminary package, but it should work. They still need a
lot of work (as does the phoenix build system itself). I make no
guarantees about these packages will be upgradeable, so be prepared to
manually remove old version, although I'll try not to break too
much. There are no source packages yet, because I haven't come up with
a good way to package the source, and I don't want to package
unnecessary components, since it's really rather large. I'm not sure
exactly what to do, but I'm hoping upstream will fix the for me.

Bug#148134: ccdoc license update

Thanks for the update. I hope you don't mind that I have CCed my reply
to the person who originally wanted to package ccdoc for Debian (and our
Bug Tracking System, which also tracks plans to package new software for
Debian). It doesn't look like we have a ccdoc package in the archive at
present, probably because my lawyerly parsing of your original license
discouraged him from doing so.

I encourage Magnus Ekdahl or any other Debian developer to take a new
look at your software.

That's an impressive website, by the way. :)
