Bug#194117: O: jesred -- A redirector for Squid

2003-05-21 Thread Zed Pobre
Package: wnpp
Version: unavailable; reported 2003-05-21
Severity: normal

I just orphaned jesred. I haven't used it personally for quite some
time, having moved all of my personal adfilter rules over to
SquidGuard. There is no upstream movement at all, and the only
reported bug is about documentation. Someone skilled in C may want to
look at why accelerators don't always work, and don't seem to improve
performance that much.

The package description is:
Jesred is a very fast and highly configurable redirector for the Squid
Internet Object Cache. It was derived from Chris Foote's and Wayne
Piekarski's Squirm 1.0 betaB and some code from Squid itself, but is
about 2-3x faster than the original version and has some additional
 features.

Rebuild the Debian '/var/lib/dpkg/status' file from information in

I have one: it's probably quite useless to package it. You want to make
sure you don't make things worse, so you won't want to touch your
/var/lib/dpkg/status too much by installing this, while on the other
hand people will probably not install this package 'just in case'.

It's a nice thing to have, but I think it'll require another
distribution method to be fully useful.

I'm not claiming this is a serious objection, but this file
is backed up into /var/backups on a nightly (?) basis by the cron
 package.

I admit that I didn't learn of this until very recently so it could
well be the case that this isn't widely documented..

You might want to think about perhaps renaming it to 'status-rebuild',
'dpkg-rebuild' sounds a bit to generic too me.

Furthermore, did you talk with the dpkg about using the dpkg-namespace?
Perhaps they'd like to integrate that script into dpkg proper, once it's
proved to work. (I cc'ed debian-dpkg)
