 Package: paxtest

 Installed-Size: 212
Maintainer: Javier Fernandez-Sanguino Pen~a [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Description: Test suite for the PaX kernel patch
PaX is a Linux kernel patch which adds much stricter control on how memory
is being used by applications. A normal Linux kernel leaves the control to the
application and does not implement any enforcement. Especially buffer overflow
attacks benefit from the absense of kernel enforced memory control. PaX tries
to do its best to enforce this control of memory used by applications, thereby
making it harder to succesfully exploit buffer overflows.
  .
Furthermore, it adds several randomisations, which also make it harder for
  buffer overflows to succeed.
  .
The test programs test all this functionality, but not all PaX functionality
  is covered.
  .
For more information about PaX, see http://pageexec.virtualave.net/.

Notice this will be the original paxtest package developed by Peter with
some (slight) changes.

Javier

Bug#222463: RFP: syrep -- a generic file repository synchronization tool

2003-12-03 Thread Lennart Poettering
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: syrep
  Version : 0.2
Upstream Author : me, mzflerc (at) 0pointer (dot) de
* URL : http://0pointer.de/lennart/projects/syrep/
* License : GPL
Description : a generic file repository synchronization tool

syrep is a generic file repository synchronization tool. It may be used
to synchronize large file hierarchies bidirectionally by exchanging
patch files. Syrep is truely peer-to-peer, no central servers are
involved. Synchronizations between more than two repositories are
supported. The patch files may be transferred via offline media, e.g.
removable hard disks or compact discs.

Files are tracked by their message digests, currently MD5. The following
file operations are tracked in the snapshot files: creation, deletion,
modification, creation of new hard or symbolic links, renaming. (The
latter is nothing more than a new hard link and removal of the old
file). syrep doesn't distuinguish between soft and hard links. In fact
even copies of files are treated as the same. Currently, syrep doesn't
synchronize file attributes like access modes or modification times.

Syrep was written to facilitate the synchronization of two large digital
music repositories without direct network connection. Patch files of
several gigabytes are common in this situation.

Syrep is able to cope with 64 bit file sizes. (LFS)

Syrep is optimized for speed. It may make use of a message digest cache
to accelerate the calculation of digests of a whole directory hierarchy.

Syrep is under active development, release 0.2 is proven to be stable
during three months of testing.

Bug#222728: RFA: sylpheed -- Light weight e-mail client with GTK+

2003-12-03 Thread Gustavo Noronha Silva
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

I request an adopter for the sylpheed package.

Althought I am not into the 'leaves RC bugs open for lots of
time' class aj talked about, I certainly could perform a much
better job in packaging if I were not overloaded.

I would like to focus on packages like apt-howto which
desperately needs updating/attention and would like to work
more closely to the GNOME packaging team.

I really like these packages (sylpheed-*), but they need more
attention than I can give them right now. So I'm looking for
someone who works with sylpheed daily, understands mail-related
protocols a bit and also have some C coding skills.

Upstream people are very nice and cooperate with me a lot --
much more than I have been cooperating with them =(

Is anyone interested in adopting: autotrace - Bitmap to vector
 graphics converter (#206859).

This package has been orphaned for over 80 days but cannot be removed
because some packages depend on it.

Hm, it looks benign enough - effectively orphaned for more than a year
yet only two open bugs, diff.gz doesn't touch upstream source much
except autofoo things, written in a language I grok, etc.

I'd be willing to take it, but if somebody who actually uses the thing
regularly steps forward, I won't cling to it.

Bug#170719: Jikes RVM depends on non-free software to be built

2003-12-03 Thread Johan Walles
I asked on [EMAIL PROTECTED] about building
JRVM using itself. This is the answer I got from David P Grove (groved at
us.ibm.com):

Hi,

It should be possible for Jikes RVM to bootstrap itself, but it will
probably take a little bit of work to make it happen. I think the main issues
are going to be (1) setting up the classloaders in such a way that we can tell
apart the VM that is running from the VM that is building and (2) doing the
'right thing' with the subset of VM_Magic operations that need to have different
interpretations at bootstrapping time.

The classpath libraries should be sufficient, so it might be easier to
try with a different VM that uses the classpath libraries first. Bootstrapping
Jikes RVM is a fairly severe stress test for a JVM. It has a very good record
of finding bugs in various product JVMs. I know that Mark Wielaard made a very
quick attempt to bootstrap Jikes RVM on kaffe a month or two ago that caused
kaffe to crash and burn very early in our build process. In theory, one should
be able to use gcj/gij to bootstrap Jikes RVM as well. I suspect the issue
there is going to be that our build scripts assume something like a standard JDK
in terms of command lines, etc. Probably fixable, but might take more work.

If I were going to try to do this, I would probably spend some time
trying to bootstrap on kaffe or gcj/gij first just to try to work out any issues
with the classpath libraries. Then once that was working, try self hosting and
work out the issues I mentioned in the first paragraph.

If backed into a corner and forced to make a wild guess, I would size
this as a 1-2 week effort by someone who was fairly familiar with either Jikes
RVM or with kaffe/gcj to either (1) make it happen or (2) discover some hidden
nasty that I'm not thinking of off the top of my head.
