   **

This program makes PNG graphics from DVI files as obtained from TeX and
its relatives.

It is intended to produce anti-aliased screen-resolution images as fast
as is possible. The target audience is people who need to generate and
regenerate many images again and again. The primary target is the
preview-latex (X)Emacs package, a package to preview formulas from
within (X)Emacs. Yes, you get to see your formulas in the (X)Emacs
buffer, see .

Another example is WeBWorK, an internet-based method for delivering
homework problems to students over the internet, giving students
instant feedback as to whether or not their answers are correct, see
.

Other applications may also benefit, like web applications as
latex2html and WYSIWYG editors like LyX.

Description : FreeBSD make for Debian

FreeBSD make packaged for Debian. This is basicaly the same as pmake,
but with some specific modifications needed to be able to build FreeBSD
 sources (such as ufsutils).

I intend to co-maintain it with Nathan, the original author of this Debian
 package.

Note: This package is NOT specific to the kFreeBSD port. It has been ported
to GNU libc and can be used to build ufsutils and other compat stuff
   that's also useful on Linux.

Description : locates classes that implement a given Java interface

The Discovery Component is about discovering, or finding,
implementations for pluggable interfaces. It provides facilities
intantiating classes in general, and for lifecycle management of
 singleton (factory) classes.
 .
Fundamentally, Discovery locates classes that implement a given Java
interface. The discovery pattern, though not necessarily this package,
is used in many projects including JAXP (SaxParserFactory and others)
and commons-logging (LogFactory). By extracting this pattern, other
projects can (re)use it and take advantage of improvements to the
 pattern as Discovery evolves.
 .
Discovery improves over previous implementations by establishing
facilities for working within managed environments. These allow
configuration and property overrides without appealing to the global
System properties (which are scoped across an entire JVM).

Description : Very small, yet very fast HTTP server

Mathopd is a very small, yet very fast HTTP server for UN*X systems.

Mathopd supports useful features of HTTP/1.1, such as persistent
connections, partial responses and pipelining. It does not support
things like content negotation. The latest version of the software
(1.5) also supports CGI/1.1.

Mathopd was designed specifically to run as a single process, and to
never grow in size. When this software was first written (early 1996)
this is something that other HTTP servers were not very good at.

Description : minimal dumb-terminal emulation program
picocom was designed to serve as a simple, manual, modem
configuration, testing, and debugging tool. It has also served (quite
well) as a low-tech "terminal-window" to allow operator intervention
in PPP connection scripts (something like the ms-windows "open
terminal window before / after dialing" feature). It could also prove
useful in many other similar tasks. It is ideal for embedded systems
since its memory footprint is minimal.

Bug#239631: Debian packages of Zelig now available

2004-03-23 Thread Chris Lawrence
A ready-to-run package of Imai, King, and Lau's "Zelig" package for GNU
R is now available for the Debian distribution at the following URL, as
well as a complete source package:

http://people.debian.org/~lawrencc/

Note that the binary package is named "r-other-gking-zelig," in
accordance with the Debian R Policy
(http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2003/debian-devel-200312/msg02332.html).
This renaming is only done to improve the ability of Debian users to
find R-related packages, obey Debian package naming policy, and avoid
name collisions; within the R environment, the package continues to be
known as "Zelig."

The Debian package depends on the "r-cran-vr" package or the
"r-recommended" bundle, and should be compatible with both R 1.8.1 (in
testing) and upcoming R 1.9.0 (in unstable). Installation of the
non-free VGAM package is suggested for a broader variety of models to be
estimated.

The following APT configuration will enable automatic installation using
"apt-get install r-other-gking-zelig":

deb http://people.debian.org/~lawrencc/ ./

The package should be installable on any Debian architecture (however,
it has only been tested on Intel x86); please send any comments,
questions, or reports of success or failure to me at my Debian
maintainer address ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) or using the Debian "reportbug"
tool.

This package has also been uploaded for inclusion in the "unstable"
branch of Debian, and hopefully will be included in the Debian 3.1
"sarge" release anticipated later this year, as well as forthcoming
releases of Dirk Eddelbuettel's "Quantian" distribution.

(For the unaware: the Debian distribution is a free or "open source,"
non-commercial operating system using the Linux kernel; more information
on the Debian Project is available at the project website,
http://www.debian.org/. More information on Quantian is available at
http://dirk.eddelbuettel.com/quantian.html.)

retitle 204464 O: sextractor -- Builds a catalogue of objects from an

thanks

OK, I have packaged the newest upstream version, but neither upstream
nor the former maintainer have been responsive so far.

As I cannot thoroughly test my packaging due to lack of appropriate
input data I don't dare to ask for a sponsor. Everything _should_
work, but you never know... I reset this package's state to 'orphaned'
now. If you want to adopt it please follow the standard procedure and
feel free to take my packaging as a base for further updates.

My latest changelog entry:
| sextractor (2.3.2-1) unstable; urgency=low
| .
| * New maintainer (Closes: #204464).
| * New upstream release, now under GPLv2.
| * debian/rules: complete rewrite
| * Split into sextractor and architecture-independent sextractor-doc
| * Removed patch from
| * http://dls.bell-labs.com/Software/software.html as
| upstream has included this functionality.
| * Standards-Version 3.6.1

Cheers and sorry for the noise,
Flo - ex-wannabe maintainer of sextractor

Is "free" really an intesting thing to put in a Debian package description?

There are several of these; how about mentioning in the description the
features that make this stand out from the others (john, crack)? All
I see in this description is a feature that it doesn't have.

Bug#239631: ITP: r-other-gking-zelig -- a unified front-end for estimating statistical models in GNU R

2004-03-23 Thread Chris Lawrence
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: r-other-gking-zelig
  Version : 1.0-1
Upstream Authors: Kosuke Imai <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Gary King <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Olivia Lau <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
* URL : http://gking.harvard.edu/zelig/
* License : GPL
Description : A unified front-end for estimating statistical models in
GNU R

The upstream authors describe Zelig ("Everyone's Statistical
Software"), in part, as follows:

With thousands of contributors who have written hundreds of packaged
routines, R can deal with nearly any statistical problem. Although
this high level of participation may be its greatest strength, the
enormous diversity in approaches to statistical inference covered by R
often results in a virtual babel of competing functions and
inconsistent syntax.

To address these problems from a common perspective, we have created
Zelig, a single, easy-to-use program, with a unified framework and
syntax, that can estimate, help interpret, and present the results of
a large range of statistical methods. It literally _is_ "everyone's
statistical software" because Zelig uses R code from many researchers.
We also hope it will _become_ "everyone's statistical software" for
applications, and we have designed it so that anyone can use it or add
their methods to it. Zelig comes with detailed, self-contained
documentation that minimizes startup costs for Zelig and R, automates
graphics and summaries for all models, and, with only three simple
commands required, generally makes the power of R accessible for all
users. Zelig also works well for teaching, and is designed so that
scholars can use the same program they use for their research.

There's still a few minor problems.

Consider this:

Description: store passwords and other secrets securely

At a minimum, change "that keep" to "that keeps".

English sentences always begin with a capital letter; you can avoid
the annoyance of capitalizing a file name by using the project name,
e.g. "Gnome Keyring is a daemon", but there's nothing wrong with
"Gnome-keyring is a ...", either.

You might want to put the first paragraph second: it is more important
to know what it does than how it does it. And actually, I'm still not
sure whether gnome-keyring is a GUI front end or a back end that other
packages can use (which other packages?), or both.

Steve

It's both. There is daemon and library to communicate with that daemon.
It similar to gconf2 package (not in function, but in packaging).

It will contain:

gnome-keyring (or gnome-keyring-daemon)
libgnome-keyring-0
libgnome-keyring-dev

packages.

Bug#239558: ITP: f-spot -- Digital photo management application

2004-03-23 Thread Anthony W . Juckel
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: f-spot
  Version : 0.0.1
  Upstream Author : Larry Ewing
* URL or Web page : http://www.gnome.org/projects/f-spot/
* License : GPL
Description : Digital photo management application

f-spot is written in C#/GTK#, and is meant to be an easy-to-use photo
management application. It allows for importing of your existing
photo collections, tagging photos with identifiers, as well as doing
simple edits of photos (e.g. rotating). f-spot was originally
written by the late Ettore Perazzoli. After his passing,
maintainership was picked up by Larry Ewing.

I'm currently building a package for f-spot. Once it is lintian and
linda clean, I will seek a sponsor on debian-mentors. The upstream
release says it is not yet ready for end user consumption, but I
believe there may be interest for early adopters to find the package
in unstable.

TUPIM - Tom's Unique PIM

It doesn't turn up on freshmeat or sourceforge, although it also appears
to be a town in Brazil. =-)

  Version : 0.2
  Upstream Author : Alexander Larsson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
* URL : http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/sources/gnome-keyring/0.2/
* License : GPL, LGPL
Description : gnome keyring system is a program that keep password and
other secrets for users.

gnome-keyring is a program that keep password and other secrets for
users. It is run as a damon in the session, similar to ssh-agent, and
other applications can locate it by an environment variable.

The program can manage several keyrings, each with its own master
password, and there is also a session keyring which is never stored to
disk, but forgotten when the session ends.

The library libgnome-keyring is used by applications to integrate with
the gnome keyring system. However, at this point the library hasn't
been
tested and used enought to consider the API to be publically
exposed. Therefore use of libgnome-keyring is at the moment limited to
internal use in the gnome desktop. However, we hope that the
gnome-keyring API will turn out useful and good, so that later it
can be made public for any application to use.

Bug#239523: "pim" is too generic for a package name

2004-03-23 Thread Number Six
I firmly believe the ancient pagan, hebrew, and Christian tradition that
To Know Something's Name Is To Control It.

My package is named pim. It might be aleithia (gr. "truth", literally
"unhidden; to shine light on") or it might be tbpim or it might be tdb
(Tom Ballard Database) or it might be pdb (Personal Database) or it
might be aleithia-pim.

But right now the best name for the binary is pim. "pim d" - edit my
data. "pim c" - edit my credit cards. "pim w" - track my weight.

Can I name the package something like {pim-tb,tbpim,aleithia}, still
name the binary /usr/bin/pim, and conflict with whoever else just has to
be called pim?

Later on it *may* grow into something more multiuser and substantial, at
which point it will no longer be pim.

What should I do?

Yeah, but I can't think of a better name, short of sticking my initials
on the end, which is what I did at sourceforge (although the "pim"
project is old and never released files.)

I can't think of a pragmatic approach. My current inclination is to
name the package "pim-tb" and still have the binary just be called
"pim", and it could conflict with any future package with also provides
/usr/bin/pim.

Alternately, I could name the binary "/usr/bin/pim_tb", or just try to
come up with completely different unique name.

What's the most pragmatic thing to do?

Hierarchical personal data manager. Schemas and data are stored in XML.
Uses GTK2. Designed for single users, small, personal databases.

///

Currently a useful list manager that implements table lookups / referential
integrity,
stores data/schemas in XML, and doesn't require a server. I use it to keep
track of my TODO lists, Books I want, espcially useful are my Account #s
for various companies and the address/phone on file they have for me, my
credit card receipts, my .flag collection, and my calorie intake. When
combined with
xsltproc to process the data it is very powerful. Long-term I hope to make it
a
