Bug#181322: Debian packaging of Helix DNA Client 10

2004-03-24 Thread Grant Bowman
Hi Nicholas,

In case you were not aware of it, http://bugs.debian.org/181322 was
submitted to request that the Helix DNA Client 10 software be packaged
for the Debian GNU/Linux distribution. I hope that someone steps
forward to help package at least the player. This might help your own
efforts as well due to the wide range of platforms that Debian ports to.
If you have any additional info, please email it to the bug report so
that Debian folks can track the status.

I can't for some odd reason find the page that lists the different
platform builds and the people supporting each one, but your name was
listed there. I noticed some of them were listed as broken. That page
also listed areas that need help on the various platforms.

Regards,

Bug#188465: irssi-jabber

2004-03-24 Thread Benj. Mako Hill
Michael,

Hope all is well with you. :)

A company I'm consulting for is about to mandate use of Jabber. I'm
not wild about the idea as I've stopped using Gabber out of annoyance
a while ago but would definitely be into using the jabber irssi
plugin.

I saw that you had filed an ITP (#188465) last April for the plugin
that's still open and without comment. Let me know what the status
is. The link you provided to the preliminary deb is no longer good.

Let me know if you still have these packages available (I'd like them)
and if you're still interested in maintaining the packages in the
archive. I might be willing to do it myself (but I'd prefer that you
did it). :)

Also, wouldn't irssi-plugin-jabber be a better name. It would parallel
with irssi-plugin-icq.

Regards,
Mako

If you want to package irssi-jabber, go ahead. I've had quite some
problems testing this, as it does not seem to play well with my socks
client (same goes for irssi-icq, irc works fine), and I don't really use
jabber anyway.

However, it seems upstream is not overly active (updating CVS, I've just
saw a couple commits from early march, but still) and I'm not sure it
works really well anyway and the user documentation is scarce.

If you don't want to take over the ITP, I can update/reroll a package,
if you promise to test it :)

One good alternative seems to be bitlbee:

Description: An IRC to other chat networks gateway
This program can be used as an IRC server which forwards everything you
say to people on other chat networks: Jabber, ICQ, AIM, MSN and Yahoo.

I haven't tried it myself yet, but from other people's remarks[0], it
seems to work fairly well. Dunno if that is feasable for you.

Yeah, the binary package should definetely be called
irssi-plugin-jabber.

That's right. I just copied verbatim the short description in the
upstream web page, whitout turning my brain on.
It would be better (and Policy complaint) "zip password cracker",
or "password cracker for zip archives".
Hmmm, the second one is better, isn't it?

>> fcrackzip is a free password cracker for zip files.
> There are several of these; how about mentioning in the description
> the features that make this stand out from the others (john, crack)?

Did You notice the "zip" part of the description?
This program cracks the zip archives protected with a password...
AFAIK neither john or crack are able to do this. At least, their man
pages does not mention it anywhere. Neither I found anything similar
querying apt-cache with "zip", "password" or "crack".

I will retitle the bug with the correct short description.
I must also remember to rip off "free" from the long one.

Bye,
Francesco

* Package name: kernel-patch-RTLinux-Free
  Version : 3.2
  Upstream Author : FSM labs <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
* URL : http://www.fsmlabs.com/products/openrtlinux/
* License : GPL
Description : kernel patch and modules to support real time computing

 From http://www.fsmlabs.com/products/openrtlinux/ and the description
 of the commersion variant:

FSMLabs RTLinuxPro building block (the commercial variant) is a tested
and validated, hard real-time, POSIX operating system that runs Embedded
Linux as an application platform. The RTCore real-time kernel at the
heart of RTLinuxPro provides rock-solid, low microsecond worst case
interrupt latency and scheduling jitter plus seamless access to Linux.

RTLinuxFree is the open source release of RTLinux: community supported,
free software, available for download at no cost. RTLinuxFree is
licensed under the GPL (see the release license file for details) and
 the RTLinux Open Patent License.

It is not FSMLabs' intent that RTLinuxFree be used as an evaluation
mechanism or as an indicator of capabilities found in RTLinuxPro. While
the two originated from the same source code base, RTLinuxPro has gone
through significant rewrites and much Q/A. Impressions based on one
product should not be applied to the other, as their feature sets are
very different. If you are looking to use RTLinux in a production
environment, please contact us at [EMAIL PROTECTED] for an RTLinuxPro
 evaluation.

RTLinuxFree is community-supported through an active mailing list, and
is designed to meet the requirements of the open source community and
developers by permitting free open source distribution of the operating
system and real-time applications under the GPL. Please refer to the
Open Patent License for exact terms for distribution and development. In
general, using RTLinuxFree is free for GPL software developers. FSMLabs
does sell "escape GPL" licenses and there are some cases where you can
use RTLinuxFree without releasing your source code, but we encourage
people who don't want to use the GPL to purchase RTLinuxPro.

FSMLabs offers commercial support for RTLinuxFree applications and there
are a number of independent consultants who can be found on the mailing
list. Refer to our services page for details on the level of service
 FSMLabs can provide.

Description: Rename attachments on the fly.
Renattach is a small, efficient and surprisingly effective filter
designed primarily to offer an additional level of safety to Windows
users whose e-mails pass through a UNIX-like mail server. Many modern
viruses are spread through e-mail, and renattach combats such viruses by
filtering e-mail attachments based on file extension. In version 1.1.1,
the MIME type is also renamed. The idea is to rename potentially
dangerous attachments (executable ones) so that the user, or the user's
poorly written e-mail software, does not accidentally execute the
 attachment.

Justification: plenty of NMUs, didn't respond to ping, new upstreams
available
