  Description : binfmt_misc plugin for UTF-8 scripts

This package provides an additional binary format for Linux: scripts
which start with an UTF-8 signature (aka BOM), i.e. with the byte
 sequence \xef\xbb\xbf#!.
 .
This is particularly useful for scripting languages which recognize
the BOM, e.g. Python. With Python 2.3 or newer, scripts with the UTF-8
BOM are considered UTF-8 enocded without the need for an addition
 encoding declaration.

Bug#181322: Support for Real audio/video only in non-free product?

2004-08-09 Thread Matt Taggart
Regarding the packaging of Real Networks helix stuff, looking at the
helixcommunity.org website I get the impression that the helix player only
supports Free Software codecs and in order to use Real audio/video you have to
use the propriatary "Real Player" version of the software. Do I understand
that right?

If that's the case then I don't see the point of yet another media player that
supports the free formats to Debian, we already have xine, vlc, maybe mplayer
someday, and many others. If there are advantages to the helix player or
people prefer it then maybe it's worth doing, otherwise why help a propriatary
software company develop their product and spread their
only-free-if-you-are-using-free-formats player? There are enough dfsg media
players in Debian to be spreading ourselves thin supporting another.

If any helix/realnetworks people are paying attention, now would be a good
time to explain why this software should be added to Debian.

WNPP cleanup procedures

2004-08-09 Thread Thomas Bushnell BSG

There used to be an established set of procedures for aging stale ITP
and ITA wnpp entries, and setting them back to O.

As I recall, it was something like:

If the ITA or ITP is more than a month old, then:

QA/WNPP sends email asking if they still intend to package or need
help,

If no response that in a few weeks, the package is set back to O, RFP,
or RFA, as appropriate.

This used to be documented somewhere on qa.debian.org, IIRC, but I
can't find it anymore. Particularly nice would be tables showing the
status; something like http://qa.debian.org/orphaned.html.

Also, a separate question: packages which transitioned from O to ITA
are still officially orphaned, but we don't track them at
http://qa.debian.org/orphaned.html, right?

Finally, there seems to be a bug in the WNPP labels, because an ITA
package could be either orphaned (and about to be adopted), or
maintained with an RFA (and about to be adopted). Those are very
different states from a QA standpoint; if it is RFA->ITA then the old
and new maintainers have collective responsibility; but if it is
O->ITA, then QA has the responsibility.

Bug#264538: RFH: usbcam-hotplug - hotplug scripts for usb cameras

2004-08-09 Thread John R. McPherson
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

I'm looking for a developer to package and maintain a small package.

usbcam-hotplug is a couple of scripts for hotplug that will start
one of the appropriate programs for transfering pictures from a
USB camera. The main reason for this package is so that desktop users with
usb cameras don't need to manually set up hotplug and manually start their
preferred application each time they hook up the camera.
The example hotplug script in the libgphoto2 doc directory isn't so
useful for debian users because it relies on pam_console/console
permissions.

There is also a hacky little zenity script that users can run to
see which appropriate programs are installed, and they can choose
their preferred app.

I'm not a debian developer and I'm not that familiar with policy etc
but I've attempted to create a deb. Source is online at
http://www.wlug.org.nz/~jrm/usbcam/

If this gets debianized, it would be nice if the front-end apps
(gtkam, gthumb, digikam etc) recommended this package...

Thanks
John McPherson

Bug#264567: RFH: dpatch: patch maintenance system for Debian source packages

2004-08-09 Thread Gergely Nagy
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

dpatch is currently maintained by Joerg Jaspert, David B Harris and
myself, however, all of us seem to be busy with other things too.

We'd need someone to review the open bugs, and implement the
features/fixes that are deemed to be worthwhile. (I have some rough
ideas about the non-dpatch-edit-patch bugs, and I'm happy to explain
them to anyone volunteering to help.)

It's not something hard or anything, just takes more time I actually
have, and will have in the near future.

Bug#257994: freehoo

2004-08-09 Thread Thomas Bushnell BSG

See bug 228039.

Freehoo should, in my opinion, be dropped from unstable. The last
change in the upstream CVS was seven months ago, and given that yahoo
changes its protocols frequently (and deliberately to frustrate free
clients)--and since gaim is doing a decent job of keeping up--there
doesn't seem to be any point to keep the package around.

I have sent a query to the upstream maintainer asking if the package
is still being maintained. Assuming it is not, we should punt it from
Debian entirely (and not just from testing).

Bug#264643: ITP: liblingua-en-inflect-number-perl -- Force number of words to singular or plural

2004-08-09 Thread Stephen Quinney
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: liblingua-en-inflect-number-perl

  Upstream Author : Simon Cozens <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
* URL : http://search.cpan.org/CPAN/authors/id/S/SI/SIMON/
* License : GPL (1 or greater) or Perl Artistic
Description : Force number of words to singular or plural

This module extends the functionality of Lingua::EN::Inflect (the
liblingua-en-inflect-perl package) with three new functions.
 .
number() takes a word, and determines its number. It returns whether
the word is singular, plural, or ambiguous for words that can be
 either singular or plural.
 .
Based on the number() function there are to_S() and to_PL() which
take a word and convert it forcefully either to singular or to
plural. In Lingua::EN::Inflect funny things happen if you try to
pluralise an already-plural word, but this module does the right
 thing.

* URL : http://search.cpan.org/CPAN/authors/id/S/SI/SIMON/
* License : GPL (1 or greater) or Perl Artistic
Description : Easier relationship specification in Class::DBI::Loader

This module acts as a mix-in, adding the relationship() method to
Class::DBI::Loader. Since Class::DBI::Loader knows how to map between
table names and class names, there ought to be no need to replicate
 the names.
 .
In addition, it is common (but not universal) to want reverse
relationships defined for has-many relationships, and for has-a
relationships to be defined for the linkages surrounding a
 many-to-many table.
 .
The aim of this module is to simplify the declaration of common
database relationships by providing both of these features.
 .
The relationship takes a string. It recognises table names (singular
or plural, for convenience) and extracts them from the "sentence".

  Upstream Author : Aaron Bentley <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
* URL : http://sourcecontrol.net/~abentley/fai/
* License : GPL
Description : An Arch frontend designed for ease-of-use

Taken from it the upstream webpage:
Fai is a front-end to Arch, meant to make it easier to use, for both
newbies and experienced users. It's intended as the successor to aba.
It's more ambitious-- it has its own commands, and some of them work
differently from Arch commands. For example, fai get will:

* look up unknown archives
* register and mirror looked-up locations, using only the
* desired version
* hard-link to the revision library

All of the above steps are optional, and all prompts are
configurable.

Like aba, fai supports external commands, which are easy to
write, and can be written in any language. Additionally,
native commands can be written in Python.

Fai supports aliases for archives, versions, etc. Aliases
can be static, based on user definitions, or determined
automatically. Automatic aliases can be used to say "the
revision from June 25" or "the revision that modified a
particular line in a given file", and more. Native commands
use aliases automatically. To expand aliases in other
commands, you can prefix them with '^'.

Like raw or tlash, Fai has a shell mode, with command
completion and intelligent argument completion for native
commands. It can also be invoked from shell, like tla or
aba.

Fai is written in Python, using the PyArch binding. It is
licensed under the GPL

Note: I've expanded the package name acronym from 'fai' since it's also
the name of the Fully Automated Installation (which I also use and love,
so don't even think about taking it out of Debian :)

I don't really remember that there was one. I did a cleanup of ITP /
RFP about a year ago.

What I did was:
* Going through the list of ITP / RFP, writing mail to each one (after
some review) if I think a status change was adaequate (e.g. like:
"upstream disappeared, so I think the RFP has no use any more).
Also, I tagged all bugs accordingly.
* Posting summaries on d-devel of the status (with a linked web page).
* closing / retitling bugs.

I did take 6 months for an ITP, and one year for a RFP as lower limit
for any action; however, if I saw good reason from the history of a
bug report to not do anything, then I didn't write mail at all.

AFAICS, yes. We track them however at other places.

Well, yes. But that's just the way it is. ;)

Bug#264566: ITP: grass5.7 -- GRASS GIS Development Version

2004-08-09 Thread Steve Halasz
Hi Andreas,

Sorry, the wrong email snuck in when I submitted the
ITP bug. I've CCd [EMAIL PROTECTED], which is my
preferred address.

The motivation for this is bug #248649 [1]. I package
qgis which has a plugin for reading and editing grass
layers. This plugin depends on gdal support for grass
written by Radim Blazek. I have verified with Radim
that his patches will only work with grass 5.7's newly
provided libraries.

Also, I believe 5.7 fixes bug #234275 [2]. I am not a
heavy grass user, but it is my impression that 5.0 is
getting old and that 5.7 is greatly improved. The
roadmap [3] for grass is kind of confusing, but it
seems reasonable to package 5.0.x, 5.3, and 5.7 to
provide various levels of stability vs. currentness.

It appears that grass 5.0.x and 5.7 can coexist on the
system, so that should not be a problem.

I sent a message to the grass packager (Federico Di
Gregorio <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>) about a week ago asking
about all this and have received no response. There is
also a wishlist bug for grass 5.3 (261483 [4]) that
has received no response. I hope that he will have had
sufficient time to raise objections before I get the
package squared away.

Steve Halasz

Well, generally, yes. But I had enough bugs to handle in either case,
so I decided for this long time. ;)

If someone is doing that more often, of course shorter times would be
better.

Well, there is a list of ITA packages. Of course, you need to take a
look into the bug report if you want to see whether it's O/ITA or
RFA/ITA.

Well, I don't like Transfer, and I also don't like to change one of
them away. Both would be better, as then one can see whether it's just
an "old bug report", or the new one.

So far we have at least two reasons to package GRASS 5.7. My
question was not against your plan to package 5.7 but instead just
to upgrade the existing GRASS. I'm not a GRASS user nor a GIS
expert (that's why I CCed Silke) but IMHO a packaging team which
would target to a recent GRASS version would be the best solution
here.

Once I had some conversation with Federico about GRASS and if
I remember right he would not have a problem with comaintenance
because of time constraints - but I might remember this false
or the situation might have changed.

So if I would be you I would proceed as follows:

  - Change the ITP bug into a "new version available" bug against GRASS.
  - Provide a patch which build a working GRASS package of version 5.7.

Kind regards

   Andreas.

Oh; I'm thinking specifically only about an ITA and a IFP.

The reason for focusing on these is that an ITA or IFP functions as a
brake on other Debian developers who may want to take over that
package. So if the ITA/IFP is lame, and nothing will happen by
whoever posted it, we should get it back to RFA/O/RFP asap so that
other Debian developers who may be interested can get it.

Yeah, I'm just trying to think of a new verb. :)

Nothing requires changing existing reports; I think first the goal
should be to figure out "how should this look", and only after that is
it worthwhile figuring out how to transition.

By RFP you mean ITA?

I think six months and a year is a really long time; the idea I have
in mind is that after say a month it is reasonable to ask: how are
things going? can we help?

I favor solutions which are faster, but which ask whether things are
going ok, than solutions which are slower and can be done without
interaction.

Actually I would like to help out, but currently I am also limited in
time. If everything goes well, I can devote time to dpatch in September
and later. I think it's way off for you guys, as I bet you want to shake
dpatch into shape for Sarge. :-|

Bug#264695: O: python-bsddb3 -- Python interface to libdb3

2004-08-09 Thread Nathan Hawkins
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

I intend to orphan the python-bsddb3 package.

The package description is:
This module provides a nearly complete wrapping of the Sleepycat C API for
the Database Environment, Database, Cursor, and Transaction objects, and each
of these is exposed as a Python Type in the bsddb3.db module. The database
objects can use various access methods: btree, hash, recno, queue. For the
first time all of these are fully supported in the Python wrappers.
 .
This package is a dependency package, which depends on Debian's default
 Python version.

Bug#255473: mysql license and python-mysqldb

2004-08-09 Thread Jonas Meurer
hi,

as far as i understood the messages on debian-legal, the license of
some mysql libraries changed from lgpl to gpl.
this makes it impossible to link any non-gpl conform software with them.

anyway, i've no glue about what this has to do with pyhton-mysqldb, as
this is licensed under "GPL or the original license based on Python
1.5.2's license", where we always can choose GPL.

i don't know whether "python 1.5.2's license" is gpl compatible or not,
but maybe we can ask upstream to clarify the situation if it is that
way.

Bug#264710: ITP: libsem -- Portable, pthread-based semaphore library

2004-08-09 Thread Robert Millan
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: libsem
  Version : 0.0.1
Upstream Author : Gael Le Mignot <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
* URL :
  http://mail.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-hurd/2002-11/msg00316.html
  http://people.debian.org/~rmh/libsem/
* License : LGPL
Description : Portable, pthread-based semaphore library

This is a portable, pthread-based implementation of POSIX semaphores. It was
initialy written as a patch for the Hurd. However, since it only relies on
portable interfaces like pthread, it can be used on any sane system.

I intend to enable this library for all dpkg architectures in which the
system doesn't currently provide semaphores (to avoid symbol conflicts).
This means the only official architecture this package will be compiled for
is hurd-i386.
