Bug#274622: RFP: kmldonkey -- KDE frontend to MLDonkey

2004-10-02 Thread Jeremy Brown

Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: KMLDonkey
 Version : 0.10pre4
* URL : http://www.kmldonkey.org
* License : GPL
 Description : KMLDonkey is a KDE frontend to MLDonkey

KMLDonkey is a pretty, user friendly interface to the MLDonkey
multi-protocol filesharing software currently packaged in Debian.
Although MLDonkey's web interface is decent, the GTK gui that ships with
MLDonkey is fairly poor, and I think having KMLDonkey available as a
replacement would be beneficial for Debian users.

Bug#274605: ITP: memaid-pyqt -- memorisation tool with optimal question scheduling

2004-10-02 Thread Jarno Elonen
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: memaid-pyqt
  Version : 0.2.1
  Upstream Author : Peter Bienstman <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
* URL : http://memaid.sourceforge.net/
* License : GPL
  Description : memorisation tool with optimal question scheduling

 MemAid is like a traditional flash-card program to help you memorise
 question/answer pairs, but with an important twist: it uses a neural network to
 schedule the best time for an item to come up for review.

 Difficult items that you tend to forget quickly will be scheduled more often,
 while MemAid won't waste your time on things you remember well. This means your
 learning process becomes much more efficient, also because the neural network
 gradually adapts to your personal memory model.

 MemAid is quite similar to a proprietary program called SuperMemo.
 This package provides PyQT and Superkaramba frontends for MemAid.

For GPL'ed modules, I'd rather just use the GPL, as it's simpler and
clearer. I don't see the point of having a special exception for the
m4 files if the underlying code is GPLed.

For LGPL'ed modules the situation is a bit murkier, and the above
notice would be fine with me.

I am looking for someone to take over my liferea package. It's a nice app and
upstream is actively working on it.

Christophe

The package description is:
 Liferea is a simple FeedReader clone for GNOME2. It is a reader for
 RSS/RDF feeds which also supports CDF channels, Atom/Echo/PIE feeds and
 OCS directories. The problem with FeedReader: for now its only available
 for Windows. There are some projects for GNU/Linux, but no solution for
 GTK/GNOME, which does not require Python or Perl.
 .
 Liferea is an abbreviation for Linux Feed Reader.

Bug#274545: ITP: nip2 -- Spreadsheet-like graphical image manipulation tool

2004-10-02 Thread Jay Berkenbilt
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: nip2
  Version : 7.10.x
  Upstream Author : John Cupitt <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
* URL : http://www.vips.ecs.soton.ac.uk
* License : GPL
  Description : Spreadsheet-like graphical image manipulation tool

 nip2 is a graphical front end to the VIPS package.
 .
 VIPS is an image processing system designed with efficiency in mind.
 It is good with large images (images larger than the amount of RAM in
 your machine), and for working with colour. It can perform many
 image manipulation tasks much faster than other packages such as
 ImageMagick and the GIMP and includes some special features such as
 creating single "mosaic" images from multiple parts.
 .
 VIPS consists of two main components: an image processing library
 with some command-line tools, and a spreadsheet-like graphical user
 interface. This package supplies the graphical interface.
 .
 With nip2, rather than directly editing images, you build
 relationships between objects in a spreadsheet-like fashion. When
 you make a change somewhere, nip2 recalculates the objects affected by
 that change. Since it is demand-driven this update is very fast,
 even for very, very large images. nip2 is very good at creating
 pipelines of image manipulation operations. It is not very good for
 image editing tasks like touching up photographs. For that, a tool
 like the GIMP should be used instead.

Please note: nip2 and vips7.10 are closely linked and are released
together. They are both in beta right now and are not expected to
clear beta before in time for Sarge. The actual version I package
will be later than the current version (7.10.3) as it will be the
first version declared by upstream to not be beta. nip2 will replace
nip which has, as of this writing, already been uploaded but has not
been through the manual overrides editing process and is therefore not
yet in unstable. I am the maintainer of the vips7.8 and nip packages.

Bug#274550: ITP: xerces26 -- Validating XML parser library for C++

2004-10-02 Thread Jay Berkenbilt
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: xerces26
  Version : 2.6.0
  Upstream Author : xerces-c-dev@xml.apache.org
* URL : http://xml.apache.org/xerces-c/
* License : Apache Software License
  Description : Validating XML parser library for C++

 Xerces-C++ is a validating XML parser written in a portable subset of
 C++. Xerces-C++ makes it easy to give your application the ability
 to read and write XML data. A shared library is provided for parsing,
 generating, manipulating, and validating XML documents. Xerces-C++ is
 faithful to the XML 1.0 recommendation and associated standards (DOM
 1.0, DOM 2.0, SAX 1.0, SAX 2.0, Namespaces, XML Schema Part 1 and
 Part 2). It also provides experimental implementations of XML 1.1
 and DOM Level 3.0. The parser provides high performance, modularity,
 and scalability.

xerces23, xerces24, and xerces25 are all also in Debian. For reasons
previously discussed on debian-devel, multiple versions of the xerces
packages have to be there at the same time. Executive summary: a
non-trivial amount of external software depends upon specific versions
of xerces, and external packages often lag behind in updating their
software to work with new versions. There are specific known
dependencies on all the above-mentioned versions.

Bug#274544: ITP: vips7.10 -- Image processing system good for very large images

2004-10-02 Thread Jay Berkenbilt
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: vips7.10
  Version : 7.10.x
  Upstream Author : John Cupitt <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
* URL : http://www.vips.ecs.soton.ac.uk
* License : LGPL
  Description : Image processing system good for very large images

 VIPS is an image processing system designed with efficiency in mind.
 It is good with large images (images larger than the amount of RAM in
 your machine), and for working with colour. It can perform many
 image manipulation tasks much faster than other packages such as
 ImageMagick and the GIMP and includes some special features such as
 creating single "mosaic" images from multiple parts.
 .
 VIPS consists of two main components: an image processing library
 with some command-line tools, and a spreadsheet-like graphical user
 interface, available in the nip package.
 .
 This package includes runtime libraries needed to run applications
 linked with the vips library.

Please note: vips7.10 is in beta at the moment, but is nearing the end
of its beta period. I am the maintainer of vips7.8, which is the
older stable version. As of this writing, vips7.8 has been uploaded
as a new package but has not yet been added manually to the overrides
file and is therefore not yet in unstable. vips7.10 is not expected
to clear beta in time for Sarge.

The current version of vips7.10 is 7.10.3, but the version I actually
package will be a somewhat later version -- it will be the first
version declared by upstream to not be beta.

 The Digest::MD2 programming interface is identical to the interface
 of Digest::MD5. MD2 is described in RFC 1115.

I request an adopter for the gtk-theme-switch package.

The package description is:
 Utilities to easily switch GTK+ themes that can be run from the console, and
 has an optional GUI dock and theme preview. It can install themes downloaded
 from gtk.themes.org as well straight from the tarball.
 .
 The package contains two binaries, switch and switch2, which respectively are
 for previewing/installing GTK+ 1.x themes and GTK+ 2.x themes.

The package is low maintenance, but requires knowledge of C and GTK+ 1.x
and 2.x to fix some of the weirder bugs against it. I'm orphaning this
basically because I don't know enough GTK+. There are no RC bugs against
gtk-theme-switch, however.

This is a nice starter package for an amateur Debian maintainer,
provided he/she knows GTK+.

dirfd.h is just dirent boilerplate code plus two trivial #if blocks.
Not worth worrying about, imho. The guts are in dirfd.m4.
getpagesize.h was factored out of GPL'd code.
I've added a copyright notice to each of those.

That's fine with me.

* Package name: fityk
  Version : 0.4.2
  Upstream Author : Marcin Wojdyr <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
* URL : http://www.unipress.waw.pl/soft/crystallography/fityk/
* License : GPL
  Description : general-purpose nonlinear curve fitting and data analysis

 Fityk is a flexible and portable program for nonlinear fitting of analytical
 functions (especially peak-shaped) to data (usually experimental data). In
 other words, for nonlinear peak separation and analysis.

 It was developed for analyzing diffraction patterns, but can be also used in
 other fields, since concepts and operations specific for crystallography are
 separated from the rest of the program.

 Fityk offers various nonlinear fitting methods, subtracting background,
 calibrating data, easy placement of peaks and changing peak parameters,
 automation of common tasks with scripts, and much more. The main advantage
 of the program is flexibility - parameters of peaks can be arbitrarily
 bound to each other, eg. the width of a peak can be an independent
 variable, can be the same as the width of another peak or can be given
 by a complicated - common to all peaks - formula.
