Bug#258097: Beagle packaging progress

2004-11-25 Thread Philipp Kern
On Thu, 2004-11-25 at 00:10, Jose Carlos Garcia Sogo wrote:
If there is not inotify patch in the kernel, fam can use polling:
 http://oss.sgi.com/projects/fam/faq.html#fam_no_imon

So back to my question: Does Beagle use FAM or directly the inotify
interface?

No, I have not contacted him. And the problem with that patch is that I
don't know if building a module is enough, or it is a bit more
intrusive. If not, that could be done (but I'm not very keen of
 maintaining a kernel patch)

I am neither, but it could be a temporary solution until it enters the
stable branch.

ITP: kernel-patch-bootsplash -- Kernel patch to display a graphical boot splash-screen

2004-11-25 Thread Thomas Albrecht
Hi there,

I was just wondering if someone is still working on this package? As I am
going to install this on my own system I'd like a debian package so my
dpkg-tool won't get messed up.

Is there a way I can help (in case help is needed) getting this package from
wishlist to production? I feel that debian lacks some nice grafical stuff
for an eye-candy look (like suse has, but suse I dont like).

I have no idea about the debian development process for packages yet, but I
do have enough programming experience I think. If someone could introduce me
somehow into this process I'd like to help. 560+ days in work sounds like a
long time... ;-)

Greets,
  Thomas

Bug#282962: ITP: gvr -- Interactive, introductory programming language

2004-11-25 Thread Sergio Talens-Oliag

* Package name: gvr
  Version : 1.1

* URL : http://gvr.sourceforge.net/
* License : GPL
Description : Interactive, introductory programming language

Guido van Robot (GvR) is a project developed by advanced high school
students for use by their peers as a learning tool and precursor to the
further study of programming with Python. It is a minimalistic programming
language providing just enough syntax to help students learn the concepts of
sequencing, conditional branching, looping and procedural abstraction.
 .
It's biggest strength is that it permits this learning in an environment that
combines the thrill of problem-solving with instant visual feedback. In
short, it is an interactive, introductory programming language that is
excellent for learning the basic concepts of programming, applicable in any
 high-level language.

I intend to orphan the hostap-driver package.

The package description is:
This is a Linux driver for wireless LAN cards based on Intersil's
Prism2/2.5/3 chipset. The driver supports a so called Host AP mode, i.e.,
it takes care of IEEE 802.11 management functions in the host computer
and acts as an access point. This does not require any special
firmware for the wireless LAN card. In addition to this, it has some
support for normal station operations in BSS and possible also in
IBSS. However, the orinoco_cs driver in current 2.4 kernel tree or
pcmcia-cs package or linux-wlan-ng is probably better supported
solution for cases that do not use Host AP mode.
 .
This package provides the source code for the hostap-driver kernel modules.
Kernel source is required to compile these modules.

Description : Image processing system good for very large images

VIPS is an image processing system designed with efficiency in mind.
It is good with large images (images larger than the amount of RAM in
your machine), and for working with colour. It can perform many
image manipulation tasks much faster than other packages such as
ImageMagick and the GIMP and includes some special features such as
creating single mosaic images from multiple parts.
 .
VIPS consists of two main components: an image processing library
with some command-line tools, and a spreadsheet-like graphical user
interface, available in the nip package.
 .
This package includes runtime libraries needed to run applications
 linked with the vips library.

Please note: vips7.10 is in beta at the moment, but is nearing the end
of its beta period. I am the maintainer of vips7.8, which is the
older stable version. As of this writing, vips7.8 has been uploaded
as a new package but has not yet been added manually to the overrides
file and is therefore not yet in unstable. vips7.10 is not expected
to clear beta in time for Sarge.

The current version of vips7.10 is 7.10.3, but the version I actually
package will be a somewhat later version -- it will be the first
version declared by upstream to not be beta.

Description : Spreadsheet-like graphical image manipulation tool

nip2 is a graphical front end to the VIPS package.
 .
VIPS is an image processing system designed with efficiency in mind.
It is good with large images (images larger than the amount of RAM in
your machine), and for working with colour. It can perform many
image manipulation tasks much faster than other packages such as

 .
VIPS consists of two main components: an image processing library
with some command-line tools, and a spreadsheet-like graphical user
interface. This package supplies the graphical interface.
 .
With nip2, rather than directly editing images, you build
relationships between objects in a spreadsheet-like fashion. When
you make a change somewhere, nip2 recalculates the objects affected by
that change. Since it is demand-driven this update is very fast,
even for very, very large images. nip2 is very good at creating
pipelines of image manipulation operations. It is not very good for
image editing tasks like touching up photographs. For that, a tool
like the GIMP should be used instead.

Please note: nip2 and vips7.10 are closely linked and are released
together. They are both in beta right now and are not expected to
clear beta before in time for Sarge. The actual version I package
will be later than the current version (7.10.3) as it will be the
first version declared by upstream to not be beta. nip2 will replace
nip which has, as of this writing, already been uploaded but has not
been through the manual overrides editing process and is therefore not
yet in unstable. I am the maintainer of the vips7.8 and nip packages.

Short description should not repeat the package name, certainly not as the
first word, and I don't think that for Linux and Unix is necessary,
considering this is the Debian package. Remember also to try and keep the
short description below about 60 characters, because anything beyond that
often gets chopped by frontends.

Simple and easy to use, but with potential to help you organize the
ideas and information you deal with every day.

That's not a bad description, but I (as a potential user) would like to know
what this thing is going to do for me beyond what (say) knotes does
(post-its for your desktop, in case you were wondering).
