Hi,

After some checks with the pkg-gnome maintainers, and following the
discussions in debian-gtk-gnome and debian-release concerning the
status of GNOME 1, I'm orphaning a couple of GNOME 1 packages.

If you're interested in adopting this package, please take contact with
Thomas Bushnell (which is in copy) since he suggested he might adopt
 the packages.

   Bye,

|
| I also agree on this. I see most of the people reopening automatic
| closed bugs like thinking that is "unfair" or anything related, to close
| a bug of theirs. "Why would anyone else close a bug of mine even if it
| hasn't have activity for 7 years? It's mine, and I decide what to do or
| not to do with it". I hope you get my point.

I would wish people would be a little more open and understand that
that putting more burden on the submitters is not a good thing. First of
all the assumption why something isn't packaged in fixed time is
not necessarily "nobody is interested". I can think many other
possibilities.

To me the RFPs are the least problem and I cannot understand why
they are under fire. Is that they are easily closed? Is it that
the submitter may not be there any more, so nobody much objects?

There are much bigger problems where the time should be put. Like for
existing packages:

- where 7 year old bugs hang in there and nothing is done.
- packages, whose maintainers have disappeared
(nobody answers to queries, bugs, questions...)
- the overall quality of how the bugs are generally handled
(autmatization scripts to monitor and WARN that author
XXX hasn't fixed bugs in package X, Y, Z, in
within time Y; months or years).

In my case, I'm interested in those bugs and this sudden closure of things
where I had spent fair amount of time to track down correct email
addresses, correct licenses, correct web pages - found or wrote good
explanations is like diminishing the work of the RFP submitter.

I may have time in the future to look into those more and perhaps package
them, but I certainly have no time to "explain" to the system just for the
sake of "requiring to keep the WMPP RFP open".

First of all, any such requirements must be put into the policy manual
to make it explicit if it is the intention to:

- close your submitted WNPP request in fixed time
- you're required to dig deep and explain more if you
want to keep the request open after XXX days.

>From perspetive of this, the requirements put into the
shoulders of the submitter:

- discourages participation. Why should the submitter
care to sent any RFPs, if they will be closed? He
may have better time to do, so why try to help some
system that does not need that kind of help?

- Putting the burden in submitter is wrong approach.
He's the postman. He delivers the message. He doesn't
necessarily know anything "deep" about the Debian or
how it works. To explain why package is needed?
Gimme break. Who can master or know 15 000 packages
and suggest "why this is better than XXX". Perhaps
an elite 24h system admin whose life is Linux, for
occasional users - this is not working right.

- What are the goals of the RFPs in the first place?
Wasn't the idea that prospective packages get
their voice and coverage? In the light of recent
events it seems more like "hey, we don't need
those RFPs, they just fill in the BTS."

Perhaps a better management of BTS is then in order. Or those that see
managing messages in BTS are difficucult due to volume, that
those are educted to evaluate to user better Mail/News
reading software that ocntains filters, topic searches,
group operations, priority handling feature etc.

Shooting down item just to cut down volume doesn't look like correct
solution to the annouance some may feel.

| Sure, saying "because I want it packaged" being an RFP is quite obvious.
| A further explanation on this is what's really needed.

This isn't helpful approach in case of RFPs. It may in case of other reopen
requests, but certainly not with mass closures. we could think that closer
should equally well "explain" it individually the reason for close -
otherwise the situation is not balanced.

|
| Yes. It was added as a suggestion, but yes, I'm adding it now to request
| it strongly.

I this will be the procedure, then it must be written into policy manual
as well. Until then this would be more like an suggestion.

I do not intend to adopt bonobo-activation. (At present.) It does
not seem to be necessary for gnucash to build or work. If it turns
out that I am incorrect, then I will be interested in adopting it if
no one else has first.

Ok. Developers, please read this mail and see attached patch as is fixes some
bugs in your code.

No, it's just that (admin-wise) peep is not really that much useful. It's
fancy, but not that useful.

I'm not aware of any.

Understood. Attached is a patch which can be used to build a Debian package
out of Peep and fixes a number of bugs in the latest release. If you don't
know how to use it I could upload packages to people.debian.org/~jfs

I just don't want to maintain more packages, so it would be best if you
found a suitable maintainer for these. I can make the initial upload,
however.

I request an adopter for the bbppp package, as I simply don't have a
need for this anymore. The package is on good shape, bug free and up
to date with upstream, so possibly it won't need much care.

The package description is:
bbppp is a blackbox tool to control and manage your PPP
link. It can start up / shut down your ppp connection
(by running pon / poff), and displays rx and tx via a
modem-lights style PPP load, and also the PPP link uptime.
 .
Note that you don't actually need blackbox for this program
to work, but it won't look as good in any other window manager.

Bug#247961: Preliminary packages for projectm

2005-09-29 Thread Jan Lübbe
Hello!

I have made some preliminary packages for projectm which can be
downloaded from http://d072.apm.etc.tu-bs.de/~jluebbe/debian/unstable/

I'm not sure if the package is completely DFSG-Free, because there are
some fonts called arial1.glf, courier1.glf and times_new1.glf. They are
included in the OpenGL font library 'GLF' by Roman Podobedov. The
license of the library states:

You can use this library in any program (commercial, educational
or individual), but in each program, where You use this library, You
should to keep this header (author name and coordinates)!

But i'm not sure if that applies to the fonts as well.

Some presets from http://milkdrop.co.uk come in the projectm tarball,
but there is no license for them. So i'm not sure what to do about them
(although projectm could be distributed without them).

If the legal problems can be worked out, i think it would be no problem
to include it in Debian.

Description: an partial implementation of IEC 61883

This library is an implementation of IEC 61883, part 1 (CIP, plug
registers, and CMP), part 2 (DV-SD), part 4 (MPEG2-TS), and part 6
(AMDTP). Outside of IIDC, nearly all FireWire multimedia devices use IEC
61883 protocols.

The libiec61883 library provides a higher level API for streaming DV,
MPEG-2 and audio over Linux IEEE 1394. This includes both reception and
transmission. It uses the new "rawiso" API of libraw1394, which
transparently provides mmap-ed DMA for efficient data transfer. It also
represents the third generation of I/O technology for Linux 1394 for
these media types thereby removing the complexities of additional kernel
modules, /dev nodes, and procfs. It also consolidates features for plug
control registers and connection management that previously existed in
experimental form in an unreleased version of libavc1394.

Description: A free PXE daemon
PXE is a specification to boot PCs from the net. Apart from BOOTP or
DHCP for acquiring an IP address and TFTP for transferring files, it
requires a PXE daemon on the server. This package provides only this
daemon. For the other protocols, it recommends alternatives that are
 known to work.
 .
If you need more information on this daemon or PXE in general, visit
 the upstream author's site .

Upstream is up and running, he pointed me that a better description
is 'QT tool' because it does not use KDE libraries at all.
A QT4 version is ongoing...

While inspecting the source code, I noticed that some source files and

 GPL.

My wish would be to have somebody adopt it who really usesthe package
often or at least has a regular testing base. And knows shell script
language and all the tools used there, regular expressions, etc. Or you
can rewrite it in Perl ;)

I also have an experimental patch from Marco d'Itri to add ATM device
support, somebody should integrate that as well.

Eduard.
