Bug#400155: O: rekall -- graphical database front-end

2006-11-23 Thread Peter Eisentraut
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

Would-be adopters should know that the new upstream versions use scons
as build system, so the package build system will likely have to be redone
completely. It's also a bit difficult to reach the authors and forward
issues.

Perhaps it's not really worth maintaining this anymore, with openoffice,
kexi, etc. supplying equivalent and better functionality.

The paper also covers the Cisco-specified objective for the "Planning
and Designing" section of the CCNA exam. Because the amount of ZnO is
much smaller than that of filler, ZnO scattering can be neglected. This
paper provides overview of the different LAN topologies and the IEEE LAN
media standards that the reader needs to know in order to do well on the
CCNP exam.

Furthermore, the three-dimensional distribution of the glide plane in
the crystal was visualized by reconstructing the linear contrast of the
glide plane. For neutron scattering the contrast of the ZnO particles is
similar to that of carbon.

The package still needs work to build with gcc 4.0.

Bug#400117: ITP: gecodej -- Java interface for the Gecode constraint programming library

2006-11-23 Thread Kari Pahula
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Kari Pahula <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

* Package name: gecodej
  Version : 1.0.1
Upstream Author : Mikael Lagerkvist, Guido Tack
* URL : http://www.gecode.org/gecodej/index.html
* License : MIT/X
  Programming Lang: C++, Java
Description : Java interface for the Gecode constraint programming library

Gecode/J is a Java interface for the Gecode C++ constraint
programming library. It allows you to
 .
  - Model and solve constraint problems in Java.
  - Explore the search tree with Gist, the Graphical Interactive
Search Tool. Either using the built-in depth-first search strategy, or
manually and interactively. Solutions and choice nodes can be
inspected by clicking on them, and visualized using custom actions.
  - Implement propagators in Java. Whether for prototyping, for
teaching, or just for fun. The propagators are integrated fully, so in
your model you can mix them freely with the built-in propagators
provided by Gecode.
  - Implement branchings for custom heuristics. Just like propagators,
custom branchings fully integrate into Gecode/J.
  - Implement search engines using copying and recomputation. As
search is fully programmable, you can write your own search engine,
e.g. for LDS or A* search. In fact, Gist is implemented entirely in
Java using the Gecode/J interface.

Depends on Sun's Java, so this'll have to go to contrib until the
license is changed.

Description : system administration tool to manage GNOME desktop settings

Sabayon provides a sane way to edit GConf defaults and GConf mandatory keys:
the same way you edit your desktop.
Sabayon launches profiles in an Xnest window. Any changes you make in the
Xnest window are saved back to the profile file, which can then be applied
 to user's accounts.

I will build the package from the ubuntu one that Sébastien Bacher made.
Sébastien told me that sabayon doesn't work really well with GNOME Python 2.3
bindings, but should work fine with GNOME Python 2.4 bindings (still not
available in Debian).

The traceroute utility displays the route used by IP packets on their way to a
specified network (or Internet) host. Traceroute displays the IP number and
host name (if possible) of the machines along the route taken by the packets.
Traceroute is used as a network debugging tool. If you're having network

CompLearn is a suite of simple-to-use utilities that you can use to
apply compression techniques to the process of discovering and learning
patterns. The compression-based approach used is powerful because it can mine
patterns in completely different domains. It can classify musical styles
of pieces of music and identify unknown composers. It can identify the
language of bodies of text. It can discover the relationships between
species of life and even the origin of new unknown viruses such as SARS.
Other uncharted areas are up to you to explore.

Description : harmonic inversion - decomposing time-series into decaying
sinusoids

Harminv is a free program and C library for harmonic inversion:
decomposing a time-series into a sum of sinusoids, including
exponentially decaying sinusoids. It is an implementation of the "filter
diagonalization method" (FDM) of Mandelshtam & Taylor, which maps the
harmonic inversion problem onto a small eigen-problem (size proportional
to the number of sinusoids). The FDM is often able to obtain much more
robust and accurate solutions than alternative methods, such as an FFT,
and this kind of analysis is applicable to many problems in science and
engineering.

Bug#400077: O: bsdmainutils -- collection of more utilities from FreeBSD

2006-11-23 Thread Graham Wilson
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

I intend to orphan the bsdmainutils package.

The package description is:
This package contains lots of small programs many people expect to find
when they use a BSD-style Unix system.
 .
Included are: banner, ncal, cal, calendar, col, colcrt, colrm, column, from,
 hexdump, look, lorder, ul, write.
 .
This package used to contain whois and vacation, which are now distributed
in their own packages. Also here was tsort, which is now in the "coreutils"
 package.

I wanted to package this really cool program two years ago already, but
I couldn't.

The problem is not that the files created by upstream are not properly
licensed. He is willing (and allowed, legally) to license proper license
them under a free license.

The real problem is, that it the program needs a lot of 'template' stuff
and includes from delphi which license these templates not only under
non-free terms (non-commercial use only), it is even undistributable
(distribution explicitly not allowed to third-parties without prior
agreement with borland; and they are likely not to give this permission,
because that is what their delphy commerical version for a few hundert
dollars is for).

Really bad that :(

Bug#400070: RFP: gaia -- Google Earth client

2006-11-23 Thread Axel Beckert
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: gaia
  Version : 0.1.0
  Upstream Author : [EMAIL PROTECTED]
* URL or Web page : http://gaia.serezhkin.com/
* License : GPLv2
  Description : Google Earth client

Gaia is both a free library and free client to Google Earth for Linux,
*BSD, MacOS X and in future also Windows.

It was developed by reverse-engineering the Google Earth protocol and
is based on many well-known open source components including OpenGL,
SCons, cURL, SDL, libjpeg, libpng, libgps and Doxygen.

The author is neither named on the gaia website, in the file COPYING
(which seems to be an unmodified GPL template) nor in the source
itself. Only the e-mail address mentioned above is given as contact
possibility. And www.serezhkin.com is not reachable at the moment.

Kind regards, Axel

Bug#400042: ITP: happs -- Haskell library for building Internet applications

2006-11-23 Thread Kari Pahula
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Kari Pahula <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

* Package name: happs
  Version : 0.8.4
  Upstream Author : Alex Jacobson
* URL : http://happs.org/
* License : BSD with advertising clause
  Programming Lang: Haskell
Description : Haskell library for building Internet applications

HAppS is a Haskell library for building industrial strength Internet
applications safely, quickly, and easily. With HAppS you focus
entirely on application functionality implemented in your favorite
language and you don't have to worry about making sure all sorts of
 server subsystems are functioning properly.
 .
  - HTTP Application Server
Performs better than Apache/PHP in our
informal benchmarks (thanks to FastPackedString), handles serving both
large (video) files and lazy (javascript) streaming, supports
HTTP-Auth, and more.
  - Mail delivery agent with integrated DNS resolver
Stop worrying about making sure a separate local mail server or DNS is
up and running to delivery your mail. HAppS takes care of making sure
your mail is delivered as long as your application itself is running
and makes sure no outbound mail is lost even with unplanned restarts.
  - XML and XSLT
Separate application logic from presentation using XML/XSLT. With
HAppS, you can have your application output XML (via HTTP or SMTP) and
handle style/presentation via separate XSLT files at runtime. HAppS
takes care of doing server side XSLT for outbound mail and HTTP
user-agents that don't support it client side.
  - SMTP Server
Handle incoming email in your application without worrying about
.procmail or other user level inbound mail configuration hackery. Just
have the HAppS.SMTP listen on port 25 or have the system mail server
SMTP forward mail for your app to some internal port.
  - Monadic ACID transaction service
Write apps as a set of simple state transformers. MACID write-ahead
logging and checkpointing make it easy for you to guarantee
application integrity in the face of unplanned outages. MACID even
guarantees that your side effects will be executed at-least-once if
they can complete within a timelimit you define.
  - Session Service
Define bits of per-user application state that automatically expire
after time limits you define. No more manual housekeeping of session
data!
  - (Experimental) Table and Index
Do relational operations safely on in memory Haskell Data.Set(s)
rather than dealing with an external SQL relational database. Define
custom indices for your Haskell datatypes (e.g. geographic/geometric
types). Use in combination with MACID for a robust relational DBMS
customized for your application.

I don't think that the license is GPL. I don't find an overall license
statement. Most files have no copyright nor license statement. I guess
that this makes the Kurso de Esperanto not redistributable. Right?

I intend to package the current CVS head of the generics branch as a
library which can be installed alongside classpath. I'll also supply
some wrappers for the main 1.5-compliant VMs to use classpath.
