Bug#515889: O: mkelfimage

2009-02-18 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

This package lost its upstream recently and is essentially without a
maintainer. The Coreboot community has-defacto
adopted it, but hasn't shown any activity. Myself, I no longer have any use for
it, thus I'm orphaning it.

Bug#515890: O: numlockx

2009-02-18 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

This package has a very inactive upstream and recently accumulated some bugs
due to the transition to X.org R7. Some
people previously showed interest for adopting it, but nothing has happened,
thus why I'm orphaning it.

Bug#515891: O: utf8-migration-tool

2009-02-18 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

This package is a tool originally developped by Ubuntu to convert Debian-based
systems to UTF-8 locales. It has seen
minor upgrades to bring it into line with Python packaging policies since being
imported into Debian, but some issues
remain open. There were a few offers to adopt this package, but nothing has
happened, hence why I'm orphaning this.

Bug#406553: RFS: kompozer - complete Web Authoring System

2009-02-18 Thread Giuseppe Iuculano
Dear mentors,

I am looking for a sponsor for my package "kompozer".

* Package name: kompozer
  Version : 0.7.10+dfsg+svn117-1
  Upstream Author : Fabien Cazenave
* URL : http://kompozer.net
* License : MPL 1.1 / GPL 2.0 or subsequent / LGPL 2.1 or subsequent
  Section : web

It builds these binary packages:
kompozer - complete Web Authoring System
kompozer-data - kompozer data files
kompozer-dev - KompoZer development files

The package appears to be lintian clean.

The upload would fix these bugs: 406553

Description: complete Web Authoring System
KompoZer is a complete Web Authoring System that
combines web file management and easy-to-use WYSIWYG
(What You See Is What You Get) web page editing.
 .
KompoZer is designed to be extremely easy to use,
making it ideal for non-technical computer users
who want to create an attractive, professional-looking
web site without needing to know HTML or web coding.

KompoZer is already in Ubuntu.

Screenshots:
http://kompozer.net/screenshots.php
http://kompozer.net/images/kpz-html+css.png

The package can be found on mentors.debian.net:
- URL: http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/k/kompozer
- Source repository: deb-src http://mentors.debian.net/debian unstable main
contrib non-free
- dget
http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/k/kompozer/kompozer_0.7.10+dfsg+svn117-1.dsc

I would be glad if someone uploaded this package for me.

Kind regards
 Giuseppe Iuculano

Bug#515663: ITP: kmess2 -- Windows(R) Live(R) Messenger(R) Client for KDE4.

2009-02-18 Thread Sjors Gielen

Rafael Belmonte schreef:

I am not sure if kmess and kmess2 packages should be at the same time in
the archive until kmess2 is not stable.

What do you think?

I've CC'd two of the KMess developers I know, Diederik and Valerio.

There's a pro and a con for adding KMess2 to the repositories:
- pro: KMess 1.5 is a very old and much less featured version of KMess.
- con: It's still even in alpha.

I'm not sure but I think I remember some very old packages being
replaced by newer versions, which were not declared stable. In any case,
I think it would be best to have a version of KMess 1.5 in the
repositories
(http://kmess.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/kmess/tags/kmess/kmess-1.5.2),
and the latest tag of KMess 2 (that's kmess-2.0alpha2).

If no maintainers can be found, I'll opt to be a maintainer for KMess,
it'd be a good learning path for me and I do have a little coding
experience with the program (I added a little feature, heh.)

If there's any Debian policy I missed on this, please let me know.

Bug#515850: RFP: mjpegtools - MJPEG video capture/editting/playback MPEG encoding

2009-02-18 Thread Reinhard Tartler
The following message is a courtesy copy of an article
that has been posted to gmane.linux.debian.devel.general as well.

are you willing to package it under the pkg-multimedia umbrella?

Sure, ubuntu has imported some packages from marillat, including
mjpegtools.

The debian/copyright file is close to useless. You need to inspect the
source manually to get an idea of its legal status.

>mpeg2enc/*.cc):

One can now argue what "commercial implementation" actually means. I'm
still waiting for ftp-master to comment on this, but AFAIUI, I don't see
why debian wouldn't be able to ship the binaries of mjpegtools, lame and
similar free software in non-free.

non-free as a convenience for users[1], that build assemble and sell
pre-installed and pre-configured devices running debian.

ftp-master, can you please comment on adding this kind software to

Please consider refraining to post comments like this in the
future. Your intention might have been good, but written as you wrote
it, it can discourage non-DDs to maintain packages.

We have sponsorship in place exactly because we (unless proven
otherwise) want also non-DDs to maintain packages, of course with
mentoring and review in place before uploading.

Also, the Debian Project endorsed the notion of Debian Maintainer [1]
which, again, show our support to non-DDs maintaining packages
(sometime for the interim before becoming DDs, sometime not).

Cheers.

We also attempted to wait for a statement from ftp-master about the
iclusion of the h261 encoder in the ffmpeg packages. IIRC in the end
we simply pushed it in the NEW queue and it got accepted -- without an
explicit statement from ftp-master. Maybe we should proceed just like
this with mjpegtools, i.e. prepare packages and upload them. If they
get rejected we'll know why. If not, even better... ;)

Interesting. I assume this would mean that works combining GPL and
OCTPL code (such as FreeCAD) would be acceptable to Debian main?

Would it make sense to send a note about the GPL compatibility of
OCTPL and its similarity to LGPL to the FTP-master? Maybe this would
get OpenCascade out of the NEW queue, it's been sitting there 4 months
already.

I don't think so. Last I corresponded with them, their last remaining
concern was about whether the Matra Datavision copyright notices could
be assumed to have transferred to Open Cascade SAS. That was six weeks
ago...

Hopefully the lenny release will let them get back to NEW queue
processing.

Bug#489392: ITP: marionnet -- A virtual network laboratory and simulation tool

2009-02-18 Thread Jonathan . Roudiere

Hello,

Please excuse me for my delay, I was on vacation.

About Marionnet, packaging is in progress but not quite finished
yet. I'm working with the upstream authors, and we still need to
solve some issues before to providing Debian compliant packages.

Currently we are providing (non-official, of course) Debian packages
for what's now the old-stable version of marionnet but the packages
aren't completely clean. The Lintian report still contains some
warnings and one error.

Those package are available on our repository at:
deb http://www.marionnet.org/download/debian/ unstable main
deb-src http://www.marionnet.org/download/debian/ unstable main

We're now working on a new version of Marionnet which fixes several
bugs or imperfections, and even if we are pretty close to a releasable
version some things deserve to be looked at; that's the reason why
I'm currently working more on the code than on packaging.

The issues which we need to solve are:

- Marionnet internals are being cleaned up and at least partially
 re-modularized

- The internationalization support is not completely finished, but
we want to include it in the new packaged version; a French-only
interface would severely restrict the public

- marionnet now uses VDE2 (Virtual Distributed Ethernet); at the
beginning vde2 was patched by us, and my package provided a patched
version of it (marionnet-vde2); the patch is not necessary any
longer, as our modifications have been integrated by VDE's upstream
author (and packages are available in Lenny) so the new version
 of Marionnet just uses it

- marionnet uses UML (user-mode-linux); we need a little patch to the
UML kernel which still needs to be ported from 2.6.18 to a more
 recent version of Linux

- I'm finishing two new, very compact filesystems for virtual
computers and virtual routers; they provide many client/server tools
but are just about 100Mb for the computer and 35Mb for the router.
The problem about how we can distribute them is not solved yet.

The patched versions of the UML kernel and the filesystems are somewhat
problematic, as they are considered just "data" for what concerns Marionnet;
Marionnet is intended to be used by students and beginners in general,
which can't be expected to be expert in the GNU/Linux system nor in
debian tools -- using deboostrap and chroot or modifying a filesystem
image to make it usable from Marionnet would definitely be out of their
reach.

Marionnet cannot work without UML kernels and filesystems, and
I don't know if I can just supply them as packaged files (like we're
currenty doing for our unofficial packages); what a clean packaging
scheme would look like is not really clear yet, and any suggestion
is welcome

Bug#515319: More info and interest

2009-02-18 Thread Michael Hanke
Hi,

[cross posting to debian-science and debian-python]

I want to draw you attention to an RFP that might deserve more
attention:

  http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=515319

It is concerned with a Matlab-to-Python "converter". The project aims to
aid the conversion of Matlab code to Python.

While this software seems to be in a rather early stage of development
it has nevertheless the potential to become a mighty tool to facilitate
the migration of an unestimable amount of Matlab code to a free
language/computing environment and hence a global migration toward the
use of free software.

These guys published a paper about their compiler in the journal
'Frontier in Neuroinformatics' (open-access as it should be ;)

  http://www.frontiersin.org/neuroinformatics/paper/10.3389/neuro.11/005.2009/

According to the journals access statistics it receives an impressive
amount of attention. It would really cool to have that beast in the
flagship of free software (which is Debian for those who wonder ;).

Thanks,

Michael

I have two questions:

  - Why not discuss it in debian-legal?

  - If they're effectively the same, why did they bother writing a new
license? Perhaps their interpretation is not the same.

Bug#404942: Status?

2009-02-18 Thread David Bremner

Following up to myself, my plan (which has been delayed
by other commitments) is to package the funambol client
library seperately, but using a version suitable for
syncevolution. You can follow that at

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=505878

Or you could, if I did anything :-).

As I said in my last message, I think the AGPL issues discussed in
that thread (short of something like a GR to overide the ftpmasters)
can be consider closed.

So in particular, if someone wants to help push this forward, I can
make what I have for libfunambol available on collab-maint.

All the best,

David

As you know (you are the ffmpeg maintainer) MPEG2 is not free, this is
why this encoder has been removed from ffmpeg.

So mjpegtools can't enter in Debian.
