Yeah, about half of these are wrapper tools or something of the sort,
half are very old software packages that should update their
documentation build process upstream (or should be removed from Debian).

While investigating this - knowing nothing about docbook myself -, I
discovered that docbook.org recommends using pandoc instead of the
openjade/xmlto/... zoo. Maybe other maintainers might find this
useful.

I'm not aware of this recommendation and I couldn't find it. The most
straightforward change would be to change to docbook-xsl. But that
would be an upstream decision.

Bug#948230: RFA: source-highlight -- convert source code to syntax highlighted document

2020-01-05 Thread Peter Eisentraut

Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

I'm looking for a new maintainer. There is a new upstream release to be
packaged and some technical packaging cleanup work to be done.
Everything works well, it's a useful package, it just needs a bit of
attention.

Bug#948229: RFA: cmark -- CommonMark parsing and rendering program

2020-01-05 Thread Peter Eisentraut

Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

I'm looking for a new maintainer. The first job would be to update to
the new upstream release. The shared library does not have a track
record of compatibility, so updating it might require some care.

Perhaps there is a way to collaborate better with the cmark-gfm package.

Bug#947175: O: sgml-spell-checker -- spell checker for SGML documents

2019-12-22 Thread Peter Eisentraut

Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

I am the upstream maintainer of this package, but I don't really
maintain it any longer. It's really more of a private tool at this point.

If no one is interested in this package, I will ask for its removal.

Bug#946757: O: lzop -- fast compression program

2019-12-15 Thread Peter Eisentraut

Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

Most sensibly maintained together with its underlying library lzo2 (see
#946756), but the two source packages are released separately upstream.

Bug#946756: O: lzo2 -- data compression library

2019-12-15 Thread Peter Eisentraut

Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

Looking for new maintainer. Requires some care, source has some
assembly code, had some portability issues in the past. Upstream
releases are rare but appear to still happen.

Bug#946410: O: libtap-formatter-junit-perl -- Perl module for converting TAP output to JUnit XML output

2019-12-08 Thread Peter Eisentraut

Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

This was once useful for use with Jenkins, before Jenkins had a plugin
for TAP results. Nowadays, I think it's obsolete. Perhaps it should be
removed.

Bug#945988: O: libintl-perl -- Uniforum message translations system compatible i18n library

2019-12-02 Thread Peter Eisentraut

Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

The package has a sizeable installation count and an active upstream.
It needs an active maintainer to keep it up to date with upstream and in
line with various policies. Perhaps the Debian Perl Group should take it.

Bug#945394: O: delimmatch -- Perl module to match delimited substrings

2019-11-24 Thread Peter Eisentraut

Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

This package is abandoned upstream.

I don't think this package was ever in general use. It was only used in
the process of doing upstream releases of the docbook-dsssl package
(note: not a build dependency in Debian). If docbook-dsssl is removed
(see #945145), so should this.

That said, there is nothing wrong with it, but I imagine in the Perl
world there are countless other modules that have the same functionality.

Bug#945146: O: docbook-dsssl-doc -- documentation for the DocBook DSSSL stylesheets

2019-11-20 Thread Peter Eisentraut

Severity: normal

This package belongs together with docbook-dsssl, about which see #945145.

Bug#945145: O: docbook-dsssl -- modular DocBook DSSSL stylesheets, for print and HTML

2019-11-20 Thread Peter Eisentraut

Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

This package is abandoned upstream.

I'm not sure if anyone or anything is still using this. There are close
relationships with other similarly obsolescent packages such as docbook
(the SGML variant) and openjade and some reverse dependencies with what
are essentially wrapper scripts. It might be worth making a concerted
effort removing all of these from Debian. Otherwise this package can
stay on life support without doing much harm.

Bug#897138: O: anacron -- cron-like program that doesn't go by time

2018-04-28 Thread Peter Eisentraut
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

I intend to orphan the anacron package.

The package description is:
Anacron (like "anac(h)ronistic") is a periodic command scheduler. It
executes commands at intervals specified in days. Unlike cron, it
does not assume that the system is running continuously. It can
therefore be used to control the execution of daily, weekly, and
monthly jobs (or anything with a period of n days), on systems that
don't run 24 hours a day. When installed and configured properly,
Anacron will make sure that the commands are run at the specified
intervals as closely as machine uptime permits.
 .
This package is pre-configured to execute the daily jobs of the
Debian system. You should install this program if your system isn't
powered on 24 hours a day to make sure the maintenance jobs of other
Debian packages are executed each day.

The package is no longer maintained upstream, and it doesn't interact well
with systemd. It might need a complete rethink or replacement.

(The co-maintainer has never been active, but they are welcome to take
over the package like everyone else.)

someone with more enthusiasm than me to package it.

Sure. Let's wait a couple of days to see who else shows up. If it's <=

Also, long term, I would like to consolidate all the patches of other
distributions and make a new upstream, either on alioth or perhaps

Bug#471801: for would-be maintainers/adopters

2009-01-19 Thread Peter Eisentraut
Since I keep getting inquiries about taking this package over, with no
one actually ending up doing anything, let me summarize what I have told
people so far:

* How can you help? -- Triage bugs, submit patches, respond to user
inquiries, and so on. The usual stuff. I don't have a secret to-do
list. Use the BTS.

* The packaging is in the collab-maint subversion repository. If you
have something to commit, please do so. If you are not sure, attach
your patch to a bug or check with me first.

* In recent times, the packaging has been very stable. The main work is
integrating new upstream releases and the occasional CVE. Note that
historically many upstream releases of egroupware have been buggy and
have often been replaced by a fixup release a week later. :-/ So it is
wise to exercise some patience before jumping on a new release.

* Consequently, this is probably not a good package for some new
contributor to adapt just to be able to play around with packaging. The
*packaging* work consists mainly of downloading a new tarball, building
a package, and uploading it. The *maintenance* work consists of
triaging bugs and interacting with users and upstream maintainers.

* So, if you want to maintain this package, start by going through the
bug list, create patches, commit patches.

Please consider the following points:

- RFA means you can adopt the package with the approval of the previous
maintainer. Which I never did do. I did read the messages of Alessandro but
they needed more consideration.

- The RFA called for adoption of the package in conjuction with egroupware,
which AFAICT, neither of you considered.

- There is currently a release freeze, which means that no new packages, least
of all completely new upstream versions, should be uploaded.

- I saw in the changelog "Added php4 dependencies". What is the point of
that? There is no PHP4 in Debian anymore.

All of these points together indicate to me that this package takeover was not
very wisely planned and executed.

> Do you want me to upload the old version of the package with a new epoch,

I ask that you upload the old version of the package with a new epoch, put me
back as the maintainer, reopen the RFA bug, and refrain from interfering with
the package until after the lenny release and further consultation with me.

OK, I didn't know that. If one were interested in not-Debian-compatibility,

This refers to the graphical interface. All the bugs are in the BTS.

For example, when I disable a service, insserv reorders the dependencies to
make them more optimal. chkconfig also interacts with the LSB init script
headers in intelligent ways, which I don't see in sysv-rc-conf.

2008-04-10 Thread Peter Eisentraut

1. chkconfig works solely on the command line.

2. sysv-rc-conf is mostly unmaintained and broken for some (of my) practical
uses.

3. chkconfig is simpler and more convenient.

4. chkconfig is well known for users coming from Red Hat and SUSE.

The output of flex and bison was not included in the source tarball. This was

In most cases (rather than in some cases), these will be installed on the same

2.59a is a alpha/beta-type release that shouldn't be packaged in the
first place.

Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: c-jdbc
  Version : 1.0.4
  Upstream Author : [EMAIL PROTECTED]
* URL : http://c-jdbc.objectweb.org/
* License : LGPL
Description : database cluster middleware for JDBC

C-JDBC is a database cluster middleware that allows any Java application
(standalone application, servlet or EJB container, ...) to
transparently access a cluster of databases through JDBC(tm). The
database is distributed and replicated among several nodes and C-JDBC
balances the queries among these nodes. C-JDBC handles node failures
and provides support for checkpointing and hot recovery.

Bug#228074: ITA: plr -- Procedural Language interface between PostgreSQL and R

2004-11-08 Thread Peter Eisentraut
Note to potential adopters: PostgreSQL 8.0 will provide a small build
infrastructure for plugin modules, and I believe the plr author is
already working on equipping his package for that. This should help
all those packages that currently need a full PostgreSQL source tree
for building. So you might want to wait for PostgreSQL 8.0 and the new
plr before you proceed.

Bug#278810: RFP: slony -- A replication system for the PostgreSQL DBMS

2004-11-07 Thread Peter Eisentraut
Two notes on this for the record:

The software is called Slony-I. There will likely be a follow-up
project called Slony-II that can do multimaster replication. So it
would be wise to call the Debian package slony1 or something similar
that includes the number.

I believe the yet to be released 1.1 series of Slony-I will support
building without a PostgreSQL source tree. (At least some people have
been in contact with me for advice regarding this.) This will likely
also require PostgreSQL 8.0. So it's probably best to wait a little
until this package can be built cleanly.

Then you should keep the package name the same and upload the package of
grace 6 to experimental. When 6 becomes the released version, you
upload the package of grace 6 to Debian unstable.

Bug#265113: ITP: libphp-fpdf -- PHP class that allows the generation of PDF files

2004-08-11 Thread Peter Eisentraut
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: libphp-fpdf
  Version : 1.52
  Upstream Author : Olivier Plathey <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
* URL : http://www.fpdf.org/
* License : "You may use, modify and redistribute this software as you
wish."
Description : PHP class that allows the generation of PDF files

FPDF is a PHP class which allows to generate PDF files with pure PHP,
that is to say without using the PDFlib library. The advantage is that
PDFlib requires a fee for a commercial usage. F from FPDF stands for
Free: you may use it for any kind of usage and modify it to suit your
needs.

FPDF has other advantages: high level functions. Here is a list of its
main features:

- Choice of measure unit, page format and margins
- Page header and footer management
- Automatic page break
- Automatic line break and text justification
- Image support (JPEG and PNG)
- Colors
- Links
- TrueType, Type1 and encoding support
- Page compression

FPDF requires no extension (except Zlib to activate compression) and
works with PHP4 and PHP5.

Where will free software end up if people create derived works and then
threaten (more or less) to stop development or invent new measures
against free distribution if someone redistributes it or otherwise
makes use of the rights granted to them?

Why shouldn't Debian users have convenient access to winex? Some Debian
users probably contributed to the software that winex was originally
based on, so it's only their right, as part of the whole free software
deal, that they can access derived works as they see fit.

If people cannot maintain a business except by trying to bend these
rules, they should reevaluate their involvement in free software.
Other people are perhaps trying to maintain a business that relies on
the rules being followed by everyone.

I think you will find that the package has no license, and since the
author says that he copied half the code from Microsoft, that means
that he will not be able to grant one, either.

Bug#259070: ITP: pgpool -- connection pool server for PostgreSQL

  Version : 2.0.3
  Upstream Author : Tatsuo Ishii <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

* License : BSD
Description : connection pool server for PostgreSQL

pgpool is a connection pool server for PostgreSQL. pgpool runs between
PostgreSQL's client and server. Any PostgreSQL client can connect to
pgpool as if it's a real PostgreSQL server. pgpool caches the
connection to the PostgreSQL server to reduce the overhead involved in
establishing the connection to it. pgpool could also be used with two
PostgreSQL servers for fail over purposes. If the first server goes
down, pgpool will automatically switch to the secondary server.

pgManage is licensed under the Open Software License, which violates the

about it. I will leave this ITP here in case other people wonder about
it.

I suggest that you name the package something like postfix-gld, since
there may be other greylisting daemons in the future, and "gld" sounds
awfully generic (GNU ld?).

Mike Schacht has been maintaining knoda packages on mentors.debian.net for
