Bug#208692: ITP: picprog -- Microchip PIC microcontroller programmer software

2006-04-02 Thread Bart Martens
Hello Jan,

About your package of picprog I found here:
http://www.janw.easynet.be/picprog/i386/

It's good to mention the homepage in the description in debian/control,
and how you did it is almost perfect. How it should be done:
http://www.us.debian.org/doc/developers-reference/ch-best-pkging-practices.en.html#s-bpp-upstream-info

The debian/changelog has multiple entries. I'm not sure whether that's
OK for an initial version to be uploaded in Debian.

I would add Closes: #208692 in the debian/changelog to close your ITP
bug report.

I see that your package depends on libstdc++6-dev which pulls in gcc-3.4
and it's friends. Does libstdc++6-4.0-dev work for your package ?

I have not tested your package.

Regards,

Bart Martens

Thanks for your interest in this package.

OK, I see, thanks for the information.

Great! It would be nice to see picprog uploaded in Debian.

I see that your package depends on libstdc++6-dev which pulls in gcc-3.4

I have created a new package (picprog_1.8.1-2_i386.deb) which depends on
libstdc++6-4.0-dev and fixes the Homepage-issue.

 Regards,
 Bart Martens

Thanks!

Package: wnpp
Version: unavailable; reported 2003-09-04
Severity: wishlist

  Package name: picprog
  Version : 1.3
Upstream Author : Jaakko Hyvätti [EMAIL PROTECTED]
  URL : http://www.iki.fi/hyvatti/pic/picprog.html

Description : Microchip PIC microcontroller programmer software

This is Picprog, a Microchip PIC microcontroller programmer software
for the simple serial port device.
.

I have already create a .deb-file for it, which can be found here
http://www.janw.easynet.be/picprog.html. I have not much experience with
packaging, so I hope someone can check if I have made some stupid errors.

English nit: a simple serial port device, not the simple serial
port device.

But I'd like to ask - could you add the word serial to the short
description? Say,

Description : Microchip PIC microcontroller serial programmer

or

Description : Microchip PIC serial programmer software

?

I ask because there's a well-known linux (x86 only, sadly) _parallel_
port PIC programmer called picprg. (Among other things, picprg is the
way to get parallel port DonTronics PIC programmers to work in linux)

Hmm... picprg has not yet been packaged for Debian, and I already
maintain a different x86-specific parallel port bit-banging
program...

Ok, I have changed the description in my package to :

| Description: Microchip PIC serial programmer software
| This is Picprog, a Microchip PIC microcontroller programmer software
| for a simple serial port device.
