Bug#285397: RFP: wmctrl -- Control a EWMH/NetWM compatible X Window Manager

2004-12-14 Thread Florian Weimer
* Shyamal Prasad:

Florian Does the program work with WindowMaker?

I don't use WindowMaker, but it now (0.90) claims NetWM
compatibility. So, yes, it *should* work with this program if you've
 got a recent enough version.

Okay, fair enough.

Florian If it doesn't, the wm prefix is a bit confusing.

Perhaps, if you use WindowMaker ;-) There are already a few packages
that are named wm* and don't have to do with WindowMaker (wmix, wml
are two I found right away).

wmix is a dockapp and thus related to WindowMaker. wml has nothing to
do with window managers at all, so there is less potential of
confusion.

I'd hate to name the package anything but wmctrl since that is what
 everyone else calls it!

If it works with WindowMaker, the wm prefix isn't harmful, so I'd
say go ahead and package it under this name.

You can find it at http://www.hserus.net/~shyamal/wmctrl/

Decklin Where are you currently in the NM proccess?

Actually, I'm not.

I a long time (fanatical...) Debian/Linux user is all. I always felt
happy finding, reporting and fixing bugs without being a DD, and never
found a package that was wnpp *and* one that I actually used a whole
lot until wmctrl.

If this changes your mind about sponsoring the package you won't
offend me. I *will* apply to get in the NM queue if you sponsor
this. Do what you are most comfortable with, but please do use my
packaging effort anyway ;-)

Cheers!
Shyamal

Well what are you waiting for? :-)

The package was generally OK, but had some minor issues. Please see
-1.1 at

http://www.red-bean.com/~decklin/debian/

The config.{sub, guess} thing is perhaps still a matter of opinion
somewhere, but I was of the understanding this issue had been
resolved. At any rate I am never keen on adding ~20k to a .diff.gz
unless it actually fixes an extant bug. If you have a better reason
than some bloke said to do this I'll listen.

Get yourself in the queue, and I'll upload it. Feel free to refer your
AM to me if you need someone to vouch for your ability to understand
packaging issues.

That's a lesson in getting details right :-) When I filed that RFP bug
I'd never expected to find a maintainer or sponsor the same night. In
hindsight I should not have rushed this out without going over the
cruft, though I know I'd have missed the ChangeLog issue!

I couldn't agree more, and you've actually made me feel much better
now that I understand this. The bloke was dh_make, and I decided to
obey this first time around. I now know to read debian-mentors .

Please do so.

I'd rather have this in the archive than have it wait for me to get my
sorry self across the lake to Seattle to get my key signed.

Decklin If you want to go through NM later and adopt it, that would
Decklin be fine. Or if you don't want to spend the time -- I can
Decklin still keep you in the loop WRT packaging it, and you'll
Decklin still be credited in changelog and copyright.

Sounds good. I'll be in touch; holler if you ever want something done
on this one. Thanks for all the help!

Wmctrl is a command line tool to interact with an
EWMH/NetWM compatible X Window Manager (examples include
enligthenment, icewm, kwin, metacity, and sawfish).
   .
Wmctrl provides command line access to almost all the features
defined in the EWMH specification. For example it can maximize
windows, make them sticky, set them to be always on top, it can
switch and resize desktops, and perform many other useful
   operations.

I have Debianized this package, including writing a man page for it
(which I'm sending upstream).

I'm not a DD so I'm hoping some one can take this over, or otherwise
sponsor it for me (which is a route I'd be happy to follow). In any
case please contact me if you are prepared to upload this so I can
send you the debianized diff.

Best regards,
Shyamal

Are you sure about titling this bug as RFP? It seems like an ITP to me.

Well, if you are up to sponsoring it I'll take you up on the

I'm re-titling the bug since you seem to indicate a desire to get this
uploaded one way or the other.
