Bug#412637: RFA: hwinfo -- Hardware identification system

2007-02-26 Thread James Vega
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

I request an adopter for the hwinfo package. I have neither the time
nor the resources to properly test and maintain this package.

The package description is:
hwinfo is the hardware detection tool used in SuSE Linux.
 .
In Debian-Edu (Skolelinux) hwinfo has shown better results than discover when
 detecting mouse, keyboard and monitor.
 .
hwinfo collects information about the hardware installed on a system. Among
others, libhd contains information about cdrom, zip, floppy, disks and
partitions, network card, graphics card, monitor, camera, mouse, sound, pppoe,
isdn, modem, printer, scanner, bios, cpu, usb, memory and smp.
 .
This package does not include the binaries hwscan, hwscand and hwscanqueue. If
you think one or more of these should be included in the package, please
contact the maintainer at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hello James,

I like to adopt this Package if it not already taken...
How dificult/easy is it to maintain?

Thanks, Greetings and nice Day

It is still up for adoption.

The packaging is fairly simple. The main reason I'm giving it up is
simply lack of time for Debian and this is the package I maintain which
interests me the least.

As for the upstream code, knowledge of C and possibly some assembly
(e.g., #412713 is a problem with some assembly on s390) would be needed.
It would also be useful to have a variety of hardware to test hwinfo's
reports.

It's also worth noting that hwinfo is developed for SuSE which
specifically patches their kernel to include some code which was
dropped from the official Linux kernel some time ago. This is the
reason for the kbd.c-tiocgdev_undefined patch in the Debian packaging.
I'm not sure if there are other kernel patches SuSE uses which may cause
further problems down the line.
