Hi, I've done this once before (libgames-scores -> libgames-support) so I'm really not keen on doing a rename again. That said, if you want to submit a patch and do the work with the sysadmins to make the rename happen, you have my permission; you can point them to this comment to show that. Michael

I don't have a lot of time atm, so if you want to drive this change, this would be most welcome Jeremy. I'm pretty sure, Michael C. wouldn't mind if you ask the sysadmins instead of myself. Michael C., I'm sorry I wasn't subscribed to this bug and didn't see your most recent response until this week. I'd like to see this rename happen for GNOME 3.22 which means it would be best if it could happen this weekend because of the impending Freeze. By correcting this issue for 3.22, it should be relatively easy to get the updated games in before Ubuntu 16.10 and Debian Stretch. I don't mind helping out but I'm not sure that my contributions will save you much time. I can do a sed replace on the git repositories and send you the patches but I don't currently have GNOME git commit rights. And I expect you'd have to be the one to talk to the GNOME System Administrators about renaming the git repo and bugzilla project. Thanks, Jeremy Bicha

Hi, I personally don't want to spend effort renaming this library a second time, but if you feel strongly about the upstream package name, you have my approval to take action to rename it. It would need changed in various places: bugzilla.gnome.org, git.gnome.org, jhbuild, gnome- continuous. That would indeed be a good excuse to fix the API versioning. We don't need to request permission from downstreams -- they can rename their packages or not as they please -- but we should indeed inform distributor-list. Maybe we could piggy-back a complete rename. The only dependencies of libgames-support use its pkg-config file, so the only thing that would need to be done is to just rebuild the handful of dependent packages. Well, I know Debian renames packages when the soname changes, but RPM has actual .so dependencies, so we don't rename packages for soname changes.

Seeing you agree that libgnome-games-support is a more suitable name, we could use the 3.21 release cycle to do the switch. There are still not that many games using the name yet in 3.20, so downstream distros would not have to change much. They will have to undergo a library transition anyway if the library is renamed as part of [1]. Maybe we could piggy-back a complete rename. If you are concerned about pissing off downstreams, we could ask on the distributors mailing list first. I would offer to do that. Would you be fine if we tried that and given other distros have no isue with the rename we go for it in 3.21? > I think it's reasonable for Debian to use a different package name if > it prefers, but do consider the value in matching all the other > distros. Also, although I don't expect non-GNOME games to use the > library, it might be a good option for non-GNOME games that use GTK+ 3. I think renaming the package alone wouldn't really help if the point is to avoid file conflicts. We'd have to rename the library package as well, including pkg-config file etc. Which in turn would mean patching all affected packages. So if we are not going to rename it upstream, we won't rename it downstream either imho. Hmm that's a very unfortunate and generic name for a project that is apparently GNOME-specific? Of course other desktops, such as KDE have committed the same sin but… :( Thanks, Guillem

I don't want to change it at this point, though, because it's been packaged by several other distros (Fedora, openSUSE, Arch) for roughly a year now, all of which chose to name the package libgames-support. I'd prefer to keep the upstream name in sync with these downstreams, and I think it's unlikely that another project would want to use this name. I think it's reasonable for Debian to use a different package name if it prefers, but do consider the value in matching all the other distros. Also, although I don't expect non-GNOME games to use the library, it might be a good option for non-GNOME games that use GTK+ 3. Hope that works for you, Michael

Hi Michael, I've just filed an ITP (intent to package) for libgames-support in Debian. Michael, given this concern by Paul, are you open to rename libgames-support? Would be great if you can comment on this issue with your upstream hat on.
