So here is an oppurtuinity to remember you hebrew lessons.

My guide lines for creating a nice hebrew translation are to avoid using a
directive form of a male. In hebrew it very common, but also very
shovinistic to write manual like this. And many times you see apoplogies
such as:
This manual is writen in male form, but speaks to all species.

I think this is just laziness. With a little effort one can avoid this, and
write in better and higher hebrew form using the plural form, similar to the
German 'Sie' form which avoids the sex issue.

Also, when checking which strings needs to be translated I looked at the
German translation (Unfortunately my german is better than my Arabic).

So, now I will set forward to create an appropriate wml file, but before I
start maybe some one can offer a script that can help with this job ?

Oz.

In addition to Tommi's comments: Take a look at a WML file, they are not at
all difficult to work with; in most cases there's only a few lines of WML code
while the rest is text and HTML code. None of us understand Hebrew and hence
can't easily assist in merging your HTML translation into a "proper" WML file,
and this part must be done in order to use the translation.

Avoid any duplicated translation work in the future by translating WML files.

It seems that Arabic pages have the navigation menu on left side (the
front page, at least on my computer). Can you specify what files have
you modified? Can you for example put your translations (especially css
files) to some web server for public review? If you don't have such
place to publish those, maybe I can try to integrate your diffs with the
build system. I'm only Finnish translation coordinator, but I've studied

No, it's not rude, but if you can take checkout (cvs commands are
directly on that page, full checkout takes about 350 MB of disk space),
you will get .wml files (which are almost like HTML files but without
extra cruft from templates). Translations can be committed only as .wml
files because that is the way how Debian's website works.

Also it is much easier to commit your changes if you can provide the
changes as diffs (patches) against current CVS repository.

I know a little arabic, but not enough to translate :-) However, the about
page, isn't translated into arabic. Also, the css page istn't localized to
Arabic. The, strings are indeed translated to arabic, but there are some
issues:
RTL readers expect for the menu in the right side for example. It's like how
RTL books are opened. It might sound surprising (or not :0) but we open our
books from the right...

I think I've done a nice job on that. I would like to submit my css file, if
it is not excepted, at least I tried getting it reviewed.

I've done some work on .po files in the past using gedit (I translated
exaile and deluge-torrent), so it should be fine.

I don't know if you know any Arabic, but I guess that CSS stuff can be
mostly copied from Arabic if it is only left-to-right versus
right-to-left issue.

Please note that some template stuff is translated with gettext (".po"
files). It seems that this gettext usage is one thing that is not
documented on the website, but if you have translated any software, it
should be very easy to do this.

What about the design and the layout of the page ? I did some work on the
CSS file.
It's not enough to just translate the strings of text. The Layout of the
page has to be a liltte bit different.

Waiting for the link to wma.

And also, what are the most important pages ?

I can think of FAQ and the Getting Debian. But please point me out to
others.

Trust me, you will never complete it, it's too much. But a translation of the
most important pages would be a good start.

No, HTML is useless. Please obtain the English WML file (I sent you a

Aport from the header and footer the WML file is nearly identical to
HTML, so you can probably just copy large parts.

Re: Hebrew Translation for Debian About Page

2008-06-16 Thread Oz Nahum
Hi,

Well, I will read trough the devel/website pages.
And yes I do inteand to do some long term work on this. The reason I started
this little project is because I felt this project is not well accessed by
hebrew users and unfortunately there are only 3 active hebrew developers.
I intened to help them as much as I can. To be able to do that, I needed to
read all the debian documents. I decided to start from the beginning and
while reading the first page (about debian) I decided to translate it.
It'll probably take a few months before I complete this project. I decided
to spent not more than 20 min. a day because I have a Master's thesis to
submit. But in the mean while I started.

So, can I send you the html and css files ?
Where do I apply for an acount (I guess the answer is among those pages, but
if you could save me some reading I'll translate a little bit more -
eventually I'll read and translate it, but it'll take some time :-) ).

Thanks again, Oz

Hi,

currently there is no pages in Debian website translated to Hebrew. This
means starting new translation. Of course single page translations can
be added to the website, but more useful and better in long-term would
be having translation coordinator for Hebrew, who would make sure that
translations are kept up to date when originals (English) are updated.

All these processes are documented at http://www.debian.org/devel/website/

If you (or someone else) are willing to contribute more translations,
you can/should also apply for CVS account to check-in translations by
yourself. Until you have an account, your translation contributions can
be checked in by someone else (for example I can do it).

Please tell us publicly if you have any long-term intentions, and I can
also add your translations to CVS if you send those to me even if I
don't probably understand most of the words. :)

Hi Jenes,
Thanks for you reply.
Actually, I didn't know about wml.
It might take some time until I learn to work with it.

I translated the html and modified the CSS code. I did it because Hebrew
need to be read from right to left as you probably know. My modification
could be used also for Pharsi and Arabic languages.

So, the next step will be to read and learn wml ? can we commit the files
straight to CVS ?

that's great! Nevertheless please be in future a little bit more
verbose. I had to search about.wml a while until I found it.

There is currently not a single Hebrew translation of our site. Maybe
you want to translate other important pages as well? We would like it :-)

> will be cheefuly joined to the current translation?

You need to send us your translated wml file so that someone of us can
commit it into CVS. The current English template for translations is
http://cvs.debian.org/webwml/english/intro/about.wml?rev=1.60&root=webwml&view=log

(Just in case you translated the HTML file you can probably easily
copy your translation back into the English wml file.)
