I'm top-posting since the message has become very long:

1) Removing translations (in general) without discussion is very
demotivating. It makes you think why bother translating debian.org at
all. You can always use the integrated translator in your browser.
(Maybe we should stop doing this and rather link to the preferred
translation service, but that is a different discussion.)

2) Removing translations, but keeping the English content is even more
demotivating. In this particular case, I don't mind removing the
release notes, but I think the release information should have be
preserved - for example in Norwegian:
https://web.archive.org/web/20230404193832/https://www.debian.org/releases/jessie/index.nb.html
This is something we could have discussed.

3) Regarding search: I don't see how the search improves very much by
removing old translated pages. If someone searches for "Debian Release
information", they don't get any hits for translated pages - for
example "Debian utgivelsesinformasjon".

Finally, I think translators focus on the main content without someone
removing old stuff :-)

I'm not angry or upset, and I don't need to discuss my points above -
it's just my opinion.

And, Thomas, I do appreciate the work you do to clean up the scripts
and the website.

Hi!

This looks great, but it would be nice if the list of "Recent Advisories"
(dsa.list) was translated - maybe using PO files? Currently the entries are
untranslated. Example:

It would be nice if the date was translated and the common categories like
"security update".

 I guess you are correct.

There might be some value to get the translation stats for a specific
language in that language. Take Swedish as an  example:
https://www.debian.org/international/l10n/po/sv.sv.html might be useful,
but https://www.debian.org/international/l10n/po/sv.de.html is completely
useless.

I guess all the cross combinations of translated stat pages come for "free"
as part of the translation of the web pages in general, but I agree that it
is a waste of resources.

Hi!

This is the PO statistics for Debian packages, not website translations. To
fix the list, packages need to be fixed - translations for "spoken in"
merged with the language were natural. (Like "nb_NO" merged with "nb".)

The unknown languages are plain bugs, I think - for example bos_XX" caused
by wrong filenames in the language directory of the software - see
https://codeberg.org/boswars/boswars/src/branch/master/languages (The file
"bos-de.po" should be named just "de.po" for example.)

You didn't reply to the first part of my question - that the RSS icon no
longer links to anything. That is probably not intentional.

Yes, I think you should consider renaming the new page. You are correct
that with the correct user agent, you do indeed get the RSS / RDF feed.
However, it's confusing and not very common to have the same URL for the
feed as for the web page.

I was curious if other file extensions could / should be used. ".data" is
kind of misleading for sub parts of wml files, but using ".wml" doesn't
work I assume - it will create new pages.

Repeated text - in general and for security

english/lts/security/index.wml and english/security/dsa.wml has a block of
repeated text as the comment in lts/security/index.wml clearly states.

How do we properly fix this - here and in general? In Norwegian, I have
created _sub_some_topic.data (with the common text) and included them where
relevant. Is this the proper webml way? Does it break translation stats or
other tooling?

two things have happened:

1) The RSS icon lost it's link

Just a question: Are translators taken into account when these improvements
are made? It's beneficial to know if we need to review the complete text or
just reformat. Some of the latest changes to the intro pages have made it
hard to track the actual changes in the text (by looking at Git commits) ...

Hi!

I can't see that anyone responded to Waxhead's mail.

I share several of the issues raised:
- quick access to info. (I think I asked about the footer menu earlier.)
- appearance for text readers. (I tested the frontpage in Links and I
can't imagine that this is good UX.)

Regarding the website "not being unifying": I completely understand
the comment, but I also think you can read the page as Debian being
both. Not sure what works better.

Anyway, asking for another redesign now might not be the best timing.
Maybe do that when we switch from webwml to something like Hugo - ref
recent mail on the list.

Looks good to me. One suggestion: Replace

I wholeheartedly support moving to HTML5. And I think it's important
that our web pages validate.

Regarding the questions:
1) Let's start by changing the template and then fix issues as they come along.
2) Fixing the time datetime attribute errors will not affect
translations since the attribute isn't displayed.
Just make sure that the attribute isn't translated (any more) and the
value is "-MM-DD".
3) Since the goal is to move everything to HTML5, I would just change
it to "license".

navbar only translated on start page

Hi!

I notice that on the start page https://www.debian.org/ the navbar containing

- "Blog"
- "Micronews
- "Planet"

is translated, but AFAICT not on any other pages. For example
https://www.debian.org/intro/ or https://www.debian.org/distrib/

First I thought it was because english/template/debian/template.wml is missing

#use wml::debian::common_translation

but I see now that english/template/debian/basic.wml contains it and
that should work?

so that is either needed or redundant ;-)

OK, I see that, but that is kind of the problem. The intro page
contains almost all relevant pages, a lot, but not all. That causes
some problems:

1) Is this all the pages that exist?
2) There is no way to get from the intro page to an overview of all
pages (or even indication that there are more pages).
3) There are too many links - too broad headings / too little organization.
4) As a "advanced"

I think we can fix this many ways, but I ended up just suggesting to
(re)add the footer ;-)

By the way, did we consider using the two column layout for the intro
page as we have for the frontpage?

Sorry, I just recently started working on the (Norwegian) web pages
after a two years break. I should of course have searched the mailing
list ...

Anyway, I suggest that we temporarily use language specific PNGs.
Making a proper fix probably takes months since we are all very busy.
(The text is already translated for all languages, I think.)

And to hijack my own thread: Why isn't "Blog Micronews Planet"
translated in the header? That should be easy to fix - the strings are
already in one of the PO files.

without footermap (except the frontpage). I assume this is because of
MAINPAGE="true" in the template invocation - ref

Untranslated text in header image - bad on mobile

Hi!

The header image - https://www.debian.org/Pics/futureprototype.png -
contains the text string "The universal operating system" which isn't
translated.

On the desktop it doesn't matter that much since the image is small
compared to the "THE COMMUNITY" and the "THE OPERATING SYSTEM"
headings. However, on mobile the image is quite prominent. It doesn't
look good when everything else is translated,

Do we have any plans to fix this? Either by making language specific
images or removing the text from the image and then adding the text
over the image?

Improve index page for yearly news archive

Hi!

The current note (with links) - see english/News/2020/index.wml for an
example - makes complete sense when the archive is for the current
year. However, when the same page is no longer the current year, it
feels awkward. I have attached a patch for 2020 (with pseudo code)
which I think works much better. Could we try to do something like
that when the 2021 page is created?

PS! For Norwegian (for 2015 to 2020) I have used the (not current
year) note that I suggest in the patch.

Thank you for the info. I actually was aware of the change, did some
googling, but decided I wanted to use my old username to match all
commits from 2017 and earlier (which I assume is locked to
"hansfn-guest"). I don't mind being marked as a guest ;-)
