This is a rendering issue with wml/buster:

Hopefully that'll go away when a fixed version is deployed on the
machine building the website.

After observing the following broken char here:

For that I went to its source file in the salsa module. But:
1. the rendering in salsa is surprising because it seems to handle a
mixed-encoding situation, and so here we cannot see the mismatch:

2. I also observed some encoding variations regarding the apostrophe
character that sometimes is the classic (U+0027) or the (U+2019). In my
opinion, an apostrophe should be U+0027 and U+2019 uses for the right close
single quotation mark.

So have Debian any rules/recommendations on the formal content?
Any tool used to validate before (or after) any changes? (like a testcheck
in its make?)
Otherwise may I proceed directly using the edition facility of salsa?

I think it is useful to demonstrate that Debian has a diverse
world-wide audience, even to English speakers. Where sites are
multilingual we could link to the English version of the site and
encourage translators to change the links to the version for their
language. For sites without any translations, we could note in the
text the language used on the site. Both of these are liable to get
out of date though.

Some ideas:

Use the link annotation attributes (nofollow/etc) that nullify the use
of the links as a link farm.

We could verify via HTTP headers that they actually use Debian on the
server(s) in question.

Require some sort of proof or statement on their website about their
use of Debian.

Hey WWW Team,

I occasionally help out with the "Who's Using Debian" section of the
website.  I've noticed a couple of things about recent submissions.

1. The submissions are in English but the sites themselves are not.  Do
   these belong in the english section of the site?
2. Many of the submissions are from online marketing agencies.  I have
   worked in that industry and have a sneaking suspicion that they're
   simply using the Debian site as a link farm[1] to drive traffic.
   What do we think about this?  It doesn't look like there's any guidance
   about this in the submission instructions[2].

The only difference between URLs containing stretch vs URLs containing
testing, is that, *in the future*, testing URLs will point to buster
and then bullseye and then the other future releases while stretch
URLs will eventually be obsoleted and archived and some stretch URLs
will no longer work. At this point in time, there is no difference
between the two but if you are storing the URLs somewhere then you
should be aware of the difference and choose the one most appropriate
for your context.

Probably the biggest recent change is that I moved away from equivs
towards generating a real package with debhelper, into which I install
all the configuration snippet files and extra scripts that I have.

In particular I've added a debsecan-based security update mechanism:

It isn't perfect but helps avoid manually picking security fixes from sid.

I fairly recently switched to unattended-upgrades and also installed
needrestart and needrestart-session so that I'm not manually doing
security upgrades and daemon restarts and get pinged to restart apps
with upgraded libraries.

Questions and comments on website redesign

first sorry for my bad English.

I have read in the German "Linux Magazin" that there are a plan to
"modernize"/redesign the websites of the Debian project. They talked of
the design that can also be found in in the kiwi[1]. Because there was
no address or any other way to contact the people behind this redesign i
made some comments into this wiki page. but there was no reaction on it
so i have searched for a contact. I hope this ML is the right place for
this.

Sorry if what i ask was allready discussed. I have not found it. Maybe
links to the mails and pages that have the answers should be collected
in the wiki.

I found [2] is this still the way the web page is generated? I have also
read something of gettext(po) in this MLs topics. This is a very hackish
way, because wml have no idea of multi language and don't separate
markup(design) and data. So if this is true, i think before making a new
design it should be change to a template system for the page generation.
WML also mix the processing in the data/content and markup mix.

What is with the wiki? Is there planed to run a normal web page and the
wiki in parallel or will the static content moved to the wiki? In this
case a redesign is useless.

Now to KallesDesign.

Please at a contact to Kalle or give any other way to get contact to the
designers.

-Add a on-page navigation to the design.
-Add jump marks before lists of links.
-Make the mark-up more semantic(e.g. Use class names like important,
filename, programm and not bold, hidden, …).
-Before define the explicit design make a reset of the CSS attributes to
the elements(borders, colors, fonts, … for the elements and then
explicit CSS by reference to class and id). There are a lot of already
useable css reset style sheets.

-the top level of mark-up should look like:

and in the CSS use the header, content, menu and footer as starting
point of the reference(e.g. .header h1 …). This way the definitions
avoid conflicts of the content.
-Provide a CSS file for printing(replace or remove background colors and
images with e.g. borders, give the links URL href=”debian.org”>debian → debian(debian.org)

Some hints for general mark-up.

-Give all headers, tables and lists a id, so they can be direct accessed
per URL.

-Don't use deprecated elements and attributes.
-on the main page(debian.org) you have markup like ...>... -->... and then use CSS
to style.
-avoid . Use the correct mark-up(e.g. , , , …). If you
don't like the bullets then change it or hide them with CSS.

-this long list of languages can be avoided. Use a form with select
Deutschvalue=”da”>dansk Use JavaScript(window.lokation,
the value of the changed selection and regex) to generate the right URL
and catch the other UAs with the web server(redirection).

I don't know.  It probably makes sense, if they speak other languages.

OpenPGP signature would be best, but if the email address is now not
existent and the website has been removed, check the phone number if
you can, but there's no point listing dead contact details, is there?
The consultant can ask for re-listing, but they can't expect us to
update their details if we've no cheap way to contact them.

1. is there any ordering for all consultants in the same country?
2. I noticed a lot of pages with "additional_info" translated. Should we
ask the submitter for additional_info translations?
3. one email was asking for removing an entry. It came from a different
email address than the one published, but the user name was the same;
the published email address is now not existent and the web site page
has been removed. Is there any policy in order to better check for
"authorised" requests for removal?

Your question is more appropriate for debian-user, but anyway:

Short answer: Use "i386". The ia64 architecture is something completely 
different and incompatible with your notebook. You mean amd64, not ia64 - 
amd64 is the version for 64-bit AMD and Intel processors. For notebooks, 
AFAIK running a 64-bit OS does not currently have any advantages.

 That is very propably an 32 bit specification, so x86 is your choice.

Questions about becoming a Debian vendor

Dear Ma'am or Sir:

Sorry for using this e-mail address because I know it is supposed to be
used for signing up, but I couldn't find another address that was
appropriate to use.

I was wondering if there were any restrictions on what my website design
other that it can't be offnsive?  And I wanted to know if I had to pay
Debian a roalty fee if I burnt my own CD's or DVD's, and if I burnt my
own, would I be obligated to copy them from CD's that I obtain from Debian
or can they be copies of downloaded images?

I think you'll need to ask debian-user or debian-cd about this.
debian-www maintains the web pages.

You need to find a developer willing to "sponsor" you. Ask debian-mentor
to help you get started.

You avoid licensing problems by staying within the law...

3 questions

Hi,
1. while trying to download the latest testing release of Debian Sarge 3.1
with jigdo 0.7.2
I found out the following error:
I did not receive the testing release, but the stable one.
Doing a quick research I found out that the *.jigdo files of the "testing"
branch are
identical with those of the "stable" branch.
Would you please correct this error?
2. If I produce Debian packages, which is the address to send them to? Just
to make shure that they appear at least in the unstable branch?
3. One package of the ones that I plan to develop depends on libmpeg2-4. It
is called xawtv-4.0.
My question is: If there exist licensing problems, how can I avoid them
without running into trouble?

is nobody who can decide about license change alone. I really don't
know what needs to be done to get license changed, but currently our
license page claims that SPI has (total) copyright, so SPI board (or
general meeting) can any day change license as it fits to them...

There has been some effort (or thoughts) on this. Please note that
because you can't only work on "English section", this effort must be
done for all pages, which includes all translations.

Maybe it would be useful for you to search some of the archives of
this list, because I can't get those discussions into my mind.

Feel free to send patches to this list, and someone usually applies
them rather quickly. Most preferred way of patching is to checkout web

Developper for years and years, I wrote a tool (another) to convert several
hex files format to others but also from/to company proprietary format.

For ages, I have several documentation including a 20 years old user's
manual DATA-I/O copy I made while beeing student...

Now my tool works properly upon the area I wanted to cover. 
I appreciate web site from all of you who I am writing to. 
But I am in a fog for one thing. 
About Motorola S-Record file format, to send the data-line count, the rules
you explain do not say the same, each other, so something is wrong.

I tried to browse into Motorola WEB-site but did not reach the information,
if you have the exact address, please let me know.

My problem is about the S5 line. 
1/ It is dedicated to send the number of data lines (S1 or S2 or S3). That's
clear. 
2/ is it using exclusively a fixed size so using a WORD/2bytes/4nibbles thus
max value to be $ ? 
3/ S5 record : is it allowing variable size from 2bytes to 4bytes alias
4nibbles to 8nibbles beeing context dependant ? 
4/ S6 record is mentionned by  [EMAIL PROTECTED]  but S6 is missing
in its introduction, see general allowed list (S0,S1,S2,S3,S5,S7,S8,S9) 

   It is the only place wher S6 appears. 
If exists why having a fixed value of 3 bytes/6nibbles, and what happens
if LineCounter overloads $FF ?

"S5" counting record. 
I have already many info on the S1/S2... file format but on the WEB the S5
is not always treated on the same way. 
As I wrote a bridge tool, this question is the very last one before the exe
is launched. 
What is sure is that S5 record contains the number of data lines (S1 or S2
or S3). 
Some documents mention that the Count size is a WORD (2bytes=4nibbles). 
Other documents says : 
S5 might be either: 
 2bytes=4nibbles or 
 3bytes=6nibbles or 
 4bytes=8nibbles. 
A third people says S5 is used till $ count is reached and above this
value then S6 record is used in place having a fixed 3bytes=6nibbles field.

Who is right ? who is wrong ? 
Please tell me.

You are comparing apples and oranges here. The display issues you
describe with Unicode you (can) get with ISO-2022 as well. The problem
here is the recognition code. In ISO-2022 it's very hard to re-sync if
you get lost (transmission failure or broken pages), with UTF-8 it is
very easy.

Well, there is an (almost) 1-to-1 mapping between Shift-JIS,
ISO-2022-JP and EUC-JP, but they are all relying on partly undefined
parts of the JIS X 0208 standard, and that the fonts that were
displaying the text had exactly those 0208 extensions that the text
were using. You have the IBM extensions, the NEC extensions and some
other, incompatible, extensions. For your text to be transmitted
correctly you needed to make sure your recipient not only understood
your encoding (Shift-JIS) but had a 0208 font with the correct
extensions. This causes a lot of problems.

You're comparing apples and oranges again. Shift-JIS is and encoding of
JIS X 0201 and JIS X 0208, which has been (mis)used by encoding the
vendor extensions, that are not necessarily compatible among computers.
CP932 defines another character set (which is based on JIS X 0201 and
JIS X 0208, but is not identical), so there you do not have the
problem, because the extensions are already predefined.

This is very similar to the western European problem where people say
that they are using ISO 8859-1, but are using the Windows extensions in
CP1252.

The problem is that since "Shift-JIS" has been changed from an encoding
of 0201 and 0208, it is not guaranteed what underlying character set it
is encoding, so it is *very* hard to figure out what to convert it to
if you convert it to another character encoding (except for EUC-JP and
ISO-2022-JP, of course, since they also can be used to encode this
"unspecified" character set) you get in trouble. This is not a problem
of Unicode, because Unicode is well-defined, but of the used variants
of Shift-JIS, because they are very badly defined.

Even if you add all the extensions that are documented anywhere to your
JIS X 0208 there is always "one more character" in used somewhere, just
because a popular Japanese font manufacturer added it to their fonts
and claimed it to be a 0208 font. Yes, I have seen these problems, and
they are a real mess to implement.

This is why I like to move to Unicode, because it is clearly defined
what it contains.


If you want a background to why I know so much about Japanese encodings
(and Chinese, etc.), consider that I have been working with Opera and
its Unicode adaptation for over a year, a year that co-incided with our
delivery of Opera for QNX for IBM, a delivery that was targetted to
Japan and China. So I have had my share of headaches with this.
Fortunately, we decided from the start to go with Unicode only (and
convert anything that comes in or goes out), I can only imagine the
problems we would have had if we hadn't.

Note that browsers cannot be free from "state" even if they use Unicode.
For example, rendering of Unicode unified CJK Han Ideographs (which are
logically same character from a certain point of view but large part of
them have significantly different glyphs) needs "state" of "language".

Thus, though it is true ISO-2022 is very complex, please note Unicode

Never.  Before appearance of Unicode, these encodings were identical,
except for small number of private additional characters.  For example,
Shift_JIS and CP932 is identical if we don't think about conversion
to/from Unicode.  Most Japanese people even don't know the name of
"CP932" and they think they are using Shift_JIS.  What they think
is correct.  However, when Unicode comes, it stated "what you are
using with Windows is CP932, not Shift_JIS."  Unicode is the origin
of this confusion by introducing many legacy encodings into Japan.

We only need to support one kind of software, and that is web browsers.
When it comes to fonts, the underlying encoding of the document should
*really* have no say in what fonts is used to display the contents
(even though I am aware that Netscape 4 does such evil things). Having
the underlying encoding as Unicode makes it easier in a lot of cases
(no need to transcode) and makes it possible to interchange content
between the languages (for example when writing names of people,
companies or places, just see what we need to do to the things that are
included from .data files on this website, we need to use entities
whenever there is a non-ASCII character).

That's because of some poor design of the legacy encodings, not
Unicode, with multiple mappings of some characters.

Yes, I have read similar reasoning before.

However, many of the problems you are describing are caused by the
legacy encodings, not by Unicode. Unicode tries to solve the problems
by defining one unambigous encoding, whereas there today are several
ambigous legacy encodings. Like the "backslash vs. yen" problem of
Shi(f)t-JIS vs EUC-JP/ISO-2022-JP. Boy, is that a headache to
implement!

Also, the width issue is really a non-issue when it comes to graphical
systems, with its proportional fonts. And it was a hack to start with
(two encoding bytes = double display-width (which even doesn't hold
true for EUC-JP, for instance, with half-width characters of two bytes
(half-width kana) and double-width characters of four bytes (the SS1
set)).

Because the algorithm transliterations is not very good.  It is very
difficult to write webpage with consideration of "What will my words
become by transliterations".  Writing ASCII is more reliable.

And, many people in the world have to use a small subset of softwares
only because such softwares support their native languages.  Such
softwares may not support Unicode.

Oh, very good.  Please note that east Asian will need not only display
support but also input support, i.e., XIM support.  (I didn't test Opera
yet and I don't know whether Opera supports XIM or not.  If it already
supports XIM, please forget this.)

Yes, in case of browsers and in case of mixture of languages, UTF-8
will work better than others (note there is a rival; ISO-2022 is a
multilingual encoding scheme with much longer history).  However,
for _one_ language (most of Debian web pages are written in one
language, with a small portion of links to other languages), usage
of legacy encodings is better, because of plenty of supporting
softwares, fonts, and so on, so far.  I am also wrestling with a
problem that Unicode doesn't have a relyable mapping table from/to
Japanese legacy encodings.  (Without such table, I don't want to
convert my text files into Unicode.)  See

Yes. As for Russian names (look at my change to the English version of

The point is the usage.  Pages should be meaningful even when
non-ASCII characters are not displayed well.  (Imagine the
far-east characters in your lynx example were some security alerts.
It should not happen!)

Using entities is the correct way of using non-ASCII characters, and it
should be promoted. Most browsers today are multilingual, and should be
able to display them properly.

Just because some implementations cannot display the characters is not
a reason for not using them (especially since we also include
transliterations anyway). It's like deciding that we won't use PNG
images just because some browsers can't display them, or to remove the
content negotiations because it's not available in some browsers, and
so on.

The best solution would probably be to transcode *all* our pages to use
UTF-8 and automatically remove the entities that can be expressed
properly.

Because programmers who code mail address harvesting spiders are
(unsurprisingly) semi-morons who have never had a look at the HTML
standard, so their code skips over an encoded "mailto:";.

I've been doing the same thing on my homepage for a while, with good
results (one single spam mail to that address so far).

Is there any reason why you have translated "jigdo" as "jingo"? Have I
managed to give my program a name which sounds obscene in Japanese, or

Transparency still can be a problem in some browsers. It's basically the
only problem.  you can do some evilness (like I did to wml) and make
the transparent colour white (or whatever the background is)
and that works ok.

The other reason why was that the pseduo frame buffer xserver thingy
was not working and you need that if you don't have X.

Yeah, and then it doesn't work. :) I've tried, and all I've gotten were some
ugly internal errors in Gimp's Perl module. Maybe you had better luck?

It is quite easy to modify the gimp script to creat png instead of gif.
One thing we have been concerned with is alienating new users if they
visit a web site that has 'broken' images if their browser doesn't support
png. We have discussed switching one image over to png for a few weeks
as a test case and converting the rest if it goes well. Unfortunately,
no one has created this test case.

I have just started to work on the translation of the Debian WWW pages
to Catalan. I have two quite separate and very different questions:

1) Why are most Pics in the pages gif's? This is probably been
   discussed before, but it must have been before I joined the
   list. In general I stay away from gif's, and I even had to install
   the gimp-nonfree package to work on the pages!

2) After I run 'make' either on my translation, or the original
   'english' tree, I get some strange results. Basically it looks like
   the #body#: and #mainbody#: templates are not being applied
   correctly, as they show up in the middle of the pages, and the
   actual body appears after the page header and footer. This is
   strange. Could it be a wml installation default?  I just installed
   the wml package.

Future expantion for example: a list of exploits that are still possible on
a given machine (open exploits) or different colors/formats in "recent_lists"
depending on open or closed.

In looking to implement the improvements discussed, I've come
across a few questions.

Is the  tag intended to be used anywhere? It is not used
anywhere in security.wml .

What is the list of new tags that should be defined? This list should
include all text that will commonly appear on pages. Here is the current
list:
  Source   (or Source Package. Let's be consistent)
  Intel architecture
  Motorola 680x0 architecture
  Alpha architecture
  Arm architecture
  Hurd Port(is that how we will refer to it?)
  Sparc architecture
  Sparc64 architecture

Should we use the longer architecture names above or simply short ones used
in the archive, e.g. mips and i386?

Note that most languages will not translate words like Intel. The whole
phrase is needed though, since many languages use different word order.
