Bug#215793: xfree86: make debian/rules binary idempotent

2004-02-20 Thread Branden Robinson
FYI,

I'm applying this, but just so you know, when attempting to clobber a
symlink to a directory, you need to use ln -nsf, not just ln -sf.

I learned this the hard way a while back. :)

Please mail this bug your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file and the
corresponding XFree86 log file from /var/log when the X server fails in
this manner despite Option "AllowMouseOpenFail" being set.

|As far as I know, the only way is to change these #defines and

This is my understanding also.
Is there a drawback in doing such thing ?

If not, do you think there might be a possibility for debian
to compile it with 512 max clients ?

An interesting thing happened -

2.6.1  - failure.
2.4.23 - failure, same problem.
2.4.25 - works fine.

I should note that the problem I have has changed slightly since the
prerelease 4.3.0 packages. Now it flickers and displays no image, but
if I toggle to the external display and back, it works. On 2.6.x and
2.4.23, the right-hand side of the image is distorted, but it does
work at 1400x1050 resolution.

Bug#233726: Solution for <> problem

2004-02-20 Thread Caspar Bothmer
Hello,

I just followed the track I pointed to myself -- in KDE control center
the keyboard layout was set to pc104, setting it to pc105 re-enabled the
key. So it's a problem of a KDE package that got updated that day.

No that was no user config error -- I use <,> and | almost every single
day and I know that it worked before 2004-02-19.

You are a bit fast on this conclusion. I get the very same error and I
use pc105.

I have a backup file in /etc/X11 called "XF86Config-4.kxconfig.backup".
 It's timestamp is 2004-02-19.

A diff on this backup and my "XF86Config-4" reveals only my change of
display modes I did today.

So from my point of view it's not the config but the package. And a
reconfiguration as you suggested doesn't change the situation.

A well-meaning but under-informed person sent the following message to
226296-quiet last month, so neither of us saw it:

  I found the thread for bug#226296 reguarding XFree86 with the savage
  driver on a 2.6 kernel.

  I'm in the process of converting my t23 from a 2.4 kernel to a 2.6
  kernel (I run RedHat 9 sorry ;-) but I'm having the same issue.
  When running under 2.4 everything works fine, when running the 2.6
  kernel I experience the issue described in the thread. This makes me
  think it is an issue with the 2.6 kernel, any insight?

  I'm running the lates redhat 9 XFree86 (4.3.0-2.90.43).

Did you perhaps also upgrade your kernel when you gave the experimental
X packages a whirl?

Do you think you could try to reproduce this bug while running a 2.4
kernel?

I'm confused. The patch mentioned on that page has been in the
4.3.0-0pre* series the whole time (attached).

Mr. De Michele, I know this is a stupid question, but are you sure
you're running XFree86 4.3.0-0pre1v5 or later?

I have 4.3.0-2 installed, and the RADEONDRIResume() function that was
added by this patch shows up in my copy of the radeon driver.

$ strings /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/radeon_drv.o | grep RADEONDRIResume
RADEONDRIResume

Mr. De Michele, what do you get when you run the above command?

Yeah, I know it's a hog.  :(

Thank you *very* much for doing this, though!

It's not 100% kosher, but I don't mind. Thanks for the patches; I will
check them against my SVN repo and integrate any that are still needed.

Bug#166515: xserver-xfree86: [ati/atimisc] screen corruption when using XVideo on Mach64 GV rev 58

XFree86 4.3.0 is now in Debian unstable.

Can you please see if you can still reproduce this problem?

Bug#233976: xserver-xfree86: XFree86-VidModeExtension broken for radeon driver

2004-02-20 Thread Jason Kraftcheck
Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.3.0-2
Severity: important
Tags: sid

XF86VidModeGetModeLine always returns the LCD resolution for my laption, even
when X is displaying to an external CRT. The XF86VidModeGEtViewPort
information appears to be arbitrary (varies with pointer location, etc.) This
breaks xscreensaver, which uses these functions to decide the geometry of
the screen saver window. The problem appears to be in the radeon driver.
If I use the vesa driver, everything works fine.

Some code to reproduce the problem:

#include
#include
#include

/* Required libraries:
  libXt
  libXext
  libXxf86vm
 */

int main(int argc, char* argv[])
{
  Widget w;
  Display* display;
  XtAppContext app;
  Bool have_port, have_mode;
  int x, y, width, height;
  int i;
  int dc;
  XF86VidModeModeLine ml;

  w = XtAppInitialize( &app, argv[0], 0, 0, &argc, argv, 0, 0, 0 );
  display = XtDisplay( w );

  for (i = 0; i < ScreenCount(display); i++)
  {
have_port = XF86VidModeGetViewPort( display, i, &x, &y );
have_mode = XF86VidModeGetModeLine( display, i, &dc, &ml );
width = DisplayWidth( display, i );
height = DisplayHeight( display, i );

printf("Screen %d: %dx%d\n", i, width, height );
if (have_port)
  printf ("\tPort (origin): (%d,%d)\n", x, y );
else
  printf ("\tPort (origin): XFVidModeGetViewPort failed.\n");

if (have_mode)
  printf( "\tModeline : %uhx%uh\n", ml.hdisplay, ml.vdisplay );
else
  printf( "\tModeline : Xf86VidModeGetModeLine failed.\n");
  }

  return 0;
}

When displaying on an external CRT at 2048x1536, the output of the above code
is:
Screen 0: 2048x1536
Port (origin): (161,768)
Modeline : 1024hx768h

A couple of days ago, I mentioned to Branden on IRC that I was having a
problem with the PCI bus scan looping forever on some ARM systems with
the 4.3 prerelease code. He suggested that I try this patch from the
HEAD:
http://cvsweb.xfree86.org/cvsweb/xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/common/xf86=
pciBus.c.diff?r1=3D3.68&r2=3D3.69&f=3Dh

I've done a local rebuild with this change applied and it does indeed
seem to solve the problem. If this could be included in the next
version of the Debian packages, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks

p.

I am not sure if this bug is related to the following bugs 187374,
212347, 214524, but they sound like they may be related. When upgrading
from 4.3.0-0pre1v1 to 4.3.0-0pre1v3 deadkeys stop working under KDE. For
example, typing ` a produces "`a" instead of "à". I think this may also
be related to the problem that the person on debian-x was having wrt XIM
xcin not working. If you downgrade back to 4.3.0-0pre1v1 everything
works fine. I do not know if 4.2 is affected as my video card does not
work under it (Radeon 9200).

XFree86 4.3 in unstable

2004-02-20 Thread Antony Gelberg
Saw this baby in unstable, hence removed my experimental line from
sources.list. An aptitude upgrade followed by aptitude upgrade showed
quite a few packages to upgrade:

The following packages will be upgraded:
  acpid apt apt-utils aptitude armagetron armagetron-common aspell
  aspell-bin base-config console-common console-data console-tools cpp
  cpp-3.3 cupsys cupsys-bsd cupsys-client cupsys-driver-gimpprint cvs

xplanet
  xplanet-images xserver-common xserver-xfree86 xterm xutils zinf zlib1g
  zlib1g-dev

I left it on it's own, and came back later. Every package installed ok
except xserver-xfree86. I get a debconf window with yes / no option,
but no question. I hit no, figuring that doing nothing is best. :) In
the terminal, I have:
Preparing to replace xserver-xfree86 4.3.0-0ds2.0.0woody2 (using
.../xserver-xfree86_4.3.0-2_i386.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement xserver-xfree86 ...
dpkg: error processing
/var/cache/apt/archives/xserver-xfree86_4.3.0-2_i386.deb (--unpack):
 trying to overwrite `/usr/X11R6/bin/gtf', which is also in package
xbase-clients
dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (Broken pipe)
debconf: Unknown template field '_description', in stanza #1 of
/var/lib/dpkg/info/xserver-xfree86.templates

So I guess that it's dist-upgrade time, as this file must have changed
packages. Problem is, if I do an aptitude dist-upgrade, it wants to
install loads of bloat - including all of gnome? Why is this? Surely
nothing recommends all of gnome... Can anyone give me a pointer?

Bug#233951: xserver-xfree86: Server dies on signal 11 during startup

2004-02-20 Thread Matt Pavlovich
Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.3.0-2
Severity: important
Tags: sid

4.3.0-2 xserver-xfree86 dies (signal 11) when trying to start the xserver for a
Intel i830
(i810) driver. Fails on 2.4.x kernels and 2.6.x kernels.

It should be noted that the experimental 4.3.x debs worked fine.

Bug#233948: underline not rendered in mozilla when using freetype renderer; underline rendered when using xtt

2004-02-20 Thread Sean Neakums
Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.3.0-2

This problem appears to be the same as reported here:
  http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-ports-bugs/2003-July/009690.html

>Description:
XFree86 4.3.0 failed to render underline text if the text rendered
using True Type font (freetype/xtt backend).
>How-To-Repeat:
Open mozilla / firebird , set the font to any ttf, surf
anywhere. Notice that the links dont have underline, although
we explicitly set 'Underline links' in mozilla/firebird
preferences.

I made the change recommended in the report above to Debian's 4.3.0,
built it, copied the freetype module over the installed 4.3.0-2's
copy, and it fixes the problem. (This is not as good a test as it
could be, I know. The build failed later on for reasons I have yet to
determine, so I wasn't able to install a full X with this change
present throughout.)

There is only a conflict between libxv1 and experimental or unofficial
versions of xlibs.

Upgrades from woody and the previous sid version (4.2.1-16) work.

I suggest:

dpkg -i --force-overwrite libxv1*.deb

Bug#233933: X server 4.3 stalls for a few seconds when switching from console back to X

2004-02-20 Thread Josip Rodin
Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.3.0-0pre1v5

Hi,

The new (4.3) X server seems to have a nasty habit of stalling transitions
from the console (640x400) to X (1024x768). Everything on the X display sits
there for five or six seconds, at which point it resumes normally.
Everything except the xawtv overlay part of the screen which is unaffected
(I see the TV normally, presuming it wasn't behind another window when I
switched to console initially).

With my ATI card (both ati from XFree86 and firegl from ATI), I see
a half-correct snapshot of the screen during the pause. Half-correct meaning
that for example I can see the windows, the background and the WindowMaker
docklets, but I can't see some of the textboxes or the dots on the dock that
indicate whether a program is started. Semi-random small things like that.

With my Matrox card (with the mga driver from XFree86), I see a blank black
screen during the pause. Sometimes the cursor is also visible on the black
screen (it's black with a white outline, normal).

There seem to be no pertinent log messages regarding this in the log file,
only several instances of what seems to be the usual fodder:
(II) 3rd Button detected: disabling emulate3Button
(WW) Open APM failed (/dev/apm_bios) (No such file or directory)

The problem disappears upon reverting to xserver-xfree86 4.2.1-16. That is,
the pause after switching back from console reverts to being minute (adj.),
probably as long as the time needed to actually re-render the screen.

There also seemed to be a similar longer pause when the X server would be
started for the first time, but I can't say whether this is just a
subjective observation. I also seem to recall seeing it on some of the other
machines where I've installed X 4.3 from experimental, but I'm not sure.

I will probably upgrade to the X 4.3 from unstable soon enough but I doubt
that something like this changed in just the handful of Debian revisions.

No other X-related packages (including xserver-common, even) were changed
after I upgraded to xserver-xfree86 4.3 and after I downgraded it back to 4.2.

Please fix this. TIA.

I'd really like to force them off the system. Would it be so awful to
rebuild some of these packages that haven't been updated since potato?

Bug#233924: xserver-xfree86: [radeon] ignoring HorizSync causes low resolution

2004-02-20 Thread Tom Epperly
Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.3.0-2
Severity: normal

I just apt-get upgrade'd to 4.3.0-2 from 4.2. Now my X11 server is
coming up in a ridiculously low resolution. It's either 640x480 or
320x240 when the LCD display can do 1400x1050.

By looking at /var/log/XFree86.0.log, it appears that it is ignoring
my HorizSync and VertRefresh from my XF86Config-4 file.

Don't know if this bug should be filed against xserver-xfree86 or xlibs.

With xfree 4.2 and XkbModel=3Dpc104 the less and greater keys where
recognized correctly on my laptop's keyboard.

After the recent upgrade those keys were not available with
XkbModel=3Dpc104.

Setting XkbModel to "pc105" everything works correctly:

Driver  "keyboard"
Option  "CoreKeyboard"
Option "XkbRules" "xfree86"
Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
Option "XkbLayout" "it"

Oh, I understood so, sorry. My thought was that his patches were so
fuzzy
(mainly were done against his personal XF86 copy) that were nearly unusable.

Before stepping forward, I'll share some thoughts:

I came to this because Wacom drivers need specifically (as probably
many
others) some files from the current XF86 build tree. While I could simply get
this files, by Branden's advice, an SDK is more than needed in XFree86 (I
guess that no such package exists in any distribution).

Speaking before really looking into the sources, I tended to think that
the
SDK should be a collection of files extracted from the tree, but from sparse
digging in the list archives it seems that:
1) the word SDK appears a lot in the sources...it seems that there is
some
support in the tree for this beast.
2) Sven Luther already build such ball of files, but I haven't found
any
evidence of his work/fault (again, please don't be too harsh, it was a
*sparse* digging).

Could you please (Branden, Daniel, Michel...) explain a little these
issues?

Also, if you have some pointers, would be great. :-P

Regards,

Ender.

I disagree. These path names are horrendous, and reflective of a
kludge.

(Yes, that's my opinion, not an objective fact.)

I agree that X font handling in Debian needs to improve. When defoma
was first written, the maintainer had difficulty communicating with me
(I'm not saying this as a euphemism for anything -- we just simply
didn't communicate much). Then defoma was orphaned, either formally or
de facto for a long time.

I think we need to put our heads together and come up with a proper
Debian Font Policy.

I am tagging this bug "wontfix" until such a policy is hammered out; at
that time the bug can be retitled and re-purposed.

Well, the problem is: as long as you Conflict: xlib6g
in xlibs, nobody will be able to install any package
that even just Provides: xlib6g.
That's why the way you suggest just simply does not
work.
(And yes, I tried it, I did build my own fake-xlib6g
with Provides: xlib6g).

That was my reason for 233818.

There is no other chance currently, than repackage any
package that depends on xlib6g currently with modified
control file.

The question is: Since the last xlib6g packages are
empty packages anyways... do you really need to
Conflict: it?

I'm sorry; I cannot reproduce this. I'd have noticed if this quit
working at any point through the 4.3.0-0pre* cycle.

I have a few questions that may help to narrow down the problem.

1) What display manager are you using?
2) Does this problem manifest if you use startx to start the X server?
3) Try adding "set -x" just after the "set -e" line in
   /etc/X11/Xsession, and restarting your X session. What do you see in
   $HOME/.xsession-errors afterwards?

This doesn't look like a complete logfile; it looks more like what gets
dumped to standard output.

For example, I don't see the usual PCI bus probe output.

You also excluded your XF86Config-4 file.

I'd like to see these things, please. Review XF86Config(7) for why.

I'm sorry, but I made a deliberate decision not to do this. xlib6g was
deprecated in woody and is now removed.

I appreciate your effort to help out with the XFree86 bug list, but in

you're closing it.

If the explanation followed your commands to the control bot, please be

Bug#231205: xserver-xfree86: happens on vesa too

2004-02-20 Thread Sven Koch
Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.3.0-2
Severity: normal
Followup-For: Bug #231205

The same problem (can't switch to another virtual console) happens here too,
with the vesa driver on a trident cyperblade xp (the xfree 4.2
trident-driver was much slower than vesa, so I use vesa - no
kernel-framebuffer in use here)

Log:
(deregister_x_lib_dir_with_ld_so):
  Rework the file replacement logic so that we are indifferent to whether
  or not there are any lines in /etc/ld.so.conf that do not match
  /usr/X11R6/lib, and we do not replace the file if we're not actually
  changing it. Thanks to Filip Van Raemdonck and Andreas Metzler for

I have an old Netscape 4.77 dating back from Potato that I absolutely need to
access certain sites that refuse to work
with Mozilla or even Opera. Unfortunately, it is dependant upon xlib6g, which
seems to be absent in XFree86 4.3.0.

Luckily, I recall reading somewhere that it should be possible to generate
xlib6g if needed (it simply was omitted
from the Debian release because almost nothing depends upon it nowadays, IIRC),
but I do not remember what to enable
in the building scripts to get the required xlib6g__.deb
archive. Could you please tell me? Thanks!

Alternately, if some existing 4.3.0 packages are supposed to "Provides: xlib6g,
libxaw6" this might work. If this is
possible, could you tell me which packages to install? Thanks!

Oh, d'oh. This means the fix I just checked in is bogus. I didn't
think about it the right way around.

Thank you VERY much for eyeballing the commit diff. That's what it's
there for. As we can already see from the 4.3.0-3 changelog, I do make
plenty of dumb mistakes, and it's nice to catch them before they end up
in a shipping package.

I am not a DRI expert and don't really use it much (guess I'm kind of
boring).

That means I'm not the best person to undertake a project of this
magnitude.

What would be ideal, in my opinion, is someone willing to shepherd an
update to DRI into our 4.3.0 packages. This work could take place on a
branch in the Subversion repository and merged onto the trunk when it
was finished.

I can even set up the nightly dump scripts to export the branch, so it's
easy for people to build packages from the branch. (Well, even easier
than svn checkout or export, which aren't hard.)

All we really need is a volunteer. Someone with some skill, some
dedication to testing, and a craving for glory. :)

I don't think that's correct.

Yup. Thanks a *lot* for the code review. Both of these issues will be
fixed in 4.3.0-3 as well.

Sorry about that:  drm-trunk-module-2.4.24-ben1
is the version name for the binary built on my machine.
The correct source version for it, according to the local dpkg output,
is
drm-trunk-module-src  2003.10.05-3

Bug#233883: xterm prevents logout on Gnome-2.4.1

2004-02-20 Thread Wolfgang Pfeiffer
Package: xterm
Version: 4.3.0-2
Severity: normal

On Gnome, after clicking the "Log Out" button from the "Actions" menu
and after clicking "OK" on the GUI that appears ("Are you sure you
want to log out?") gnome is not able to close down the session to
another login screen as long one or more xterms are open:

I have to hover the mouse pointer over the xterms to make them
disappear: And only when they're exited Gnome closes down X to a new
login screen.

This behaviour does not happen, when other apps like Mozilla, Emacs
etc are running: Those are closed down appropriately by Gnome before
logging me out to an new login screen.

Just upgraded here from 2.4.22 to
2.4.24-ben1
drm-trunk-module-2.4.24-ben1
to see if it helps, but to no avail so far ...

TIA

Best Regards
Wolfgang

As far as I know, Sven Luther was doing some preliminary work on an
XFree86
SDK, but it seemed that his patched were finally rejected.

I'm thinking of doing that for 4.3.0, so stay tuned.

Bug#233874: xserver-xfree86: less and greater keys not presents with XkbModel = pc104 and XkbLayout= it

2004-02-20 Thread Emanuele Rocca
Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.3.0-2
Severity: minor

Don't know if this bug should be filed against xserver-xfree86 or xlibs.

With xfree 4.2 and XkbModel=pc104 the less and greater keys where
recognized correctly on my laptop's keyboard.

After the recent upgrade those keys were not available with
XkbModel=pc104.

Setting XkbModel to "pc105" everything works correctly:

Driver  "keyboard"
Option  "CoreKeyboard"
Option "XkbRules" "xfree86"
Option "XkbModel" "pc105"

Bug#224353: Use the -norender option

Bug#233870: xserver-xfree86: default font config should include Defoma paths

2004-02-20 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.3.0-2
Severity: normal

It would be desirable for the FontPath lines to include these by default:

FontPath"/var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/TrueType"
FontPath"/var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/CID"

This would result in the following default lines:

Section "Files"
FontPath"unix/:7100"# local font server
FontPath"/var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/TrueType"
FontPath"/var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/CID"
# if the local font server has problems, we can fall back on these
FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/CID"
FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo"
FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc"
FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/cyrillic"
FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi"
FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi"
FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Type1"
EndSection

I ALMOST put this in as a wishlist item BUT, given how defoma is the standard
font access method on Debian, there
really is no reason to force the user to add those lines manualy; they MUST be
there by default.

As noted by Filip Van Raemdonck in #233645 you'll also need to add
'|| true'.

Otherwise if $ldsoconf contains _only_ $dir then
'fgrep -svx "$dir" "$ldsoconf' will return an error and the script will
exit prematurely.

BTW Thanks for the work.

Bug#233867: "Provides: xlib6g" needed in 4.3.0

2004-02-20 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
Package: xlib6g
Version: 4.2.1-3
Severity: normal

Thanks!
